Review/Analysis of DS9's "Rules of Engagement"

[identity profile] tv-366.blogspot.com 2017-06-16 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Despite the fancy title, this has nothing to do with weddings and very little to do with fighting, at least directly. It does, however, remind us why we hate lawyers.

Mental health junk

(Anonymous) 2017-06-15 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Today my PCP prescribed Zoloft for anxiety and depression. Has anyone here ever taken it, and if so what are your experiences with it?

Also I'm strongly considering seeing someone who specializes in mental health but I'm not sure whether I should look for a psychiatrist or a psychologist. Does it make much of a difference?

Psychiatrist can prescribe better drugs.

Is that the first depression medication you have been on?

I haven't taken it but it's a modern SSRI, and from what I've read they're all more or less similar. Basically, the thing to keep in mind is that different SSRIs work very differently for different people, and if you think it's maybe not as effective as it could be, or if there's side effects that are markedly unpleasant, you should be strongly consider trying a different SSRI and seeing if that suits you better.

Generally my experiences with SSRIs (Citalopram in my case) has been pretty solid, just in terms of cutting down on depressive moods and relatively few side effects. Hope they work for you.

Also I'm strongly considering seeing someone who specializes in mental health but I'm not sure whether I should look for a psychiatrist or a psychologist. Does it make much of a difference?

AFAIK the difference is basically that one is an MD and can prescribe drugs. So if you already have a prescription, probably doesn't matter. Just try to find someone who works for you.

I sleep on my back/side and can't fathom how people sleep on their stomach. Then gain, I have breasts.

I've always known I was bisexual in a way that I never really quite questioned it, but I finally acknowledged it out loud to my boyfriend earlier this week (not 'come out', I just somehow brought up bisexuality and he said something along the lines of 'like you' in a really cute way lol and I said 'sure!') and I feel... happier?

It's weird because nothing about me has changed. I still fawn over so many men and women in front of my dad, sister, brothers, etc. but I feel like... I opened a window and there is just a crack of fresh air that makes all the difference.

Trends you don't understand

(Anonymous) 2017-06-16 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Brought to my mind by a recent Dear Abby letter.

People who get upset when someone other than their own children doesn't wish them a happy Mother's Day.

Like... wtf, you're not my mom, I have no idea what kind of mom you even are! Why am I obligated to wish you a HMD?

Dammit internet

(Anonymous) 2017-06-16 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I had a shit day already and was poking around tumblr looking for costuming stuff when I scrolled past a chain reblog saying "reblog or your mom will die in 928 seconds." Well I visited my mom at her hospice board and care today and she has an eye infection and could barely talk and could hardly even move her head to indicate yes or no. Thanks for the panic attack.

Also I had a big fight with my roommate who had no idea I had new baby chicks in addition to adult chickens, because "they'll make noise!" (Like the adult hens do?) "You're a shady bitch for going behind my back and I won't help you with them why do you always inconvenience me?" (Yes such an inconvenience she literally didn't notice the brooder pen in the larger chicken run for three weeks or the extension cord running the heat lamp for the past week or thst I've been buying chick starter and bedding and lugging them through the house.)

Also it's my fucking house but she never asked permission to move her now-ex boyfriend in for two years rent free, or for that matter, to get a cat. It's a cute cat but she'd go so long without emptying the litter box the floor in her room is pitted from cat shit she didn't bother to clean. And funnily enough in the middle of her tirade she spat "at least you didn't get a cat." Welp. Can hardly wait for that explosion and also it was such an inconvenience when I got a cat a month ago that she has no clue exists.

Book club - July poll CLOSED, announcements and planning

July poll closed!

It looks like we will be reading Ring of Bright Water by Gavin Maxwell for July.

For June, don't forget we are reading Joust by Mercedes Lackey. What discussion date would be preferable? I am more than happy to do Sunday, July 2, as the closest Sunday to the end of the month; I don't know if many F!Sers live in the US and have plans for July 4th weekend. I could also do it the previous Sunday, which I believe would be a week from this coming Sunday, if everyone thinks they will have the book read by then (I will; I'm almost done) but it's rather early. I cannot unfortunately do Sunday the 9th. I will be at a concert that night.

Does the 2nd work for all/most people, or do you have another preference? Please let me know.

One other order of business: I've had multiple requests to change reccing procedures somewhat now that recs have become very popular. There are a few options:

-limit the number of recs per person to one
-ban re-recs (not indefinitely, but give books a one- or two-month cooldown period if they lose a poll. We've done this in the past, and it's worked well)
-limit the number of recs accepted per day (I'm not super inclined to do this since I know people can come back and comment on the post whenever they'd like, but I can definitely try to have at least one weekday and at least one weekend day open during recs if that makes a difference?)
-change the number of books accepted per month

Please let me know in the comments if you would like to try one or more of these things next month.

I will try to put up a few more posts about this in the coming week, including one this weekend.

Happy reading!

Didn't read the thread yesterday so I'm not sure what the exact concerns were that were brought up.

I would say, one, do a month without re-nomination, and two, try to have at least one weekend and one weekday. And maybe do a gap day in between recs? You could always just say that the rec posts are going to be closed once the next day's secrets go up if you needed to limit the time.

I like having two recs available from people, and I think adding more books to the poll would make it more complicated.

I'd definitely support the return of the three month cool down period for losing recs.

And limiting it to one rec per person seems fair. If you have three books you want to rec, then you've got three months worth of recs and no worries about having to repost them.

I'd like to return to the one person one vote system too though, I don't feel the check boxes are working out.

Huh. I felt sure the Zeus thing was going to take it. I guess I got to order a different book from Amazon now.

I'm also not around July 2nd, but otherwise I'm good with any other day you choose.

The 2nd is fine by me! And I enjoyed the book.
