Review/Analysis of DS9's "Waltz"

Sisko and Dukat face off after surviving a ship explosion. Sisko's physically injured and Dukat's mentally broken, so the end result is a very mismatched yet dangerous series of conversations. And that's not even including the voices in Dukat's head...

Youtube playlists

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-07-30 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the longest your youtube watch later has ever gotten? I just realized mine is up over 3000 now because I keep adding things.

Re: Youtube playlists

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My problem is that I can't decide on one single mechanism for things to watch. Like, I have some things on my watch later playlist, I have things bookmarked in a million different places, I have albums saved on spotify, I have lists of things I want to watch in notepad documents, it's a damn mess.

Looking for videogame recs

[personal profile] thewakokid 2017-07-30 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I want a new open world to explore. I've reached that point in my gaming cycle where everything feels "Meh". I know in a few weeks I'll be like "I think I'll go back to Los Santos" or something, and actually in a few weeks Agents of Mayhem is out so I'll be golden, but for the time being I could do with a new something to look through. I've got so many unplayed games and I just cant decide where to take myself. Recs?

Say you come upon an organization that you really like and seems right up your alley and a dream job, but they're not hiring or advertising for hiring. Would it be considered bad form to just send a general "Hey I think you're awesome and I'd be a good fit, here's my resume" type of email anyway?

What habit do you wish you had never gotten out of?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I've realized I am no longer a content creator, just a consumer. I used to write nearly every day, and now I can't remember the last time I sat down and actually wrote a full something. I comment here and there, but that doesn't count. I came to this realization about a month ago and keep telling myself to change and just sit down and write, but it seems that once I got out of the habit of doing it regularly it's really dang hard to start again.

New new, or new to you new. It don't matter.

From the strong suggestion of a friend, I just finished the first ep of Midnight, Texas and am pleasantly surprised. I'm actually really looking forward to the next ep and the season as a whole. It's been awhile since something's actually hooked my interest.

Dammit! (Pet illness and death TW)

(Anonymous) 2017-07-31 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
So I've been raising a bunch of baby chicks that I ordered from a hatchery. They survive shipping because they live on stored yolk for 2-3 days after hatching, but sometimes one doesn't make it. This time, one had died by the time I got them from the post office, and another didn't make it 48 hours once I got her home--and as I later found out, was showing signs of a severe thiamine (B1) deficiency.

One of the other chicks lost her ability to walk over a few days, and when I took her to the vet, they splinted her legs and told me to start giving all the chicks extra thiamine, because the deficiency causes lameness and slipped tendons. I started adding a tiny fraction of an adult human dose B-complex vitamin to their water, and the limping chick improved and started putting on weight and walking, a bit stiffly, but still.

Then all the chicks moved outside for most of the day, and came down with Coccidosis. It's caused by a protozoa kind of like Toxoplasmosis (which only affects humans, goats, sheep, and cats) and makes them lethargic, not eat much, and can make them crap blood and in severe cases, die. One of mine died the day after I started treating them with Amprolium.

Amprolium isn't an antibiotic, and I bought it on the vet's advice. You add it to their drinking water over the course of 5 days or so. It's also routinely added in smaller amounts to chick feed so baby chicks get some exposure to the protozoa, enough to develop immunity.

I didn't know how exactly it worked since the vet didn't tell me, presumably she didn't know and it's not on the package. It works because it mimics thiamine and the protozoa metabolize it instead of thiamine and die. Which can also happen to the animals being treated because they develop thiamine deficiencies too. I stopped adding B vitamins to the chicks' water because I didn't want to mix a bunch of different supplements into it in case they stopped drinking because of the taste, otherwise the meds wouldn't have worked. But I didn't know that.. I still added a vitamin supplement to their food. And I have to start giving thiamine to my limping chick tomorrow or she might die of thiamine deficiency. She's back to her legs not working and her claws and feet are starting to curl up in tight balls.

And when I dose her I'm terrified the Coccidosis will come back. I ordered a different medication online that isn't commercially available in the US (but it's not illegal either) that doesn't affect thiamine metabolism, but it's not supposed to get here until at least August 3rd. Argh.

Re: Book club - July discussion!

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-07-30 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
My overall thoughts: this isn't the best book I've ever read, but it's not the worst. However, it took a really long time to get going. It wasn't until page 53 iirc out of 140 that otters were even mentioned, and it took a while longer after that for the story to really pick up. While Camusfeàrna certainly sounds pretty, that much exposition is usually something of a slog to me.

The writing itself was very good; old-fashioned without being hard to understand, and the prose was enjoyable.

The thing I liked most about the book was the thing it was advertised as - a story about otters. I loved all three of the otters that were spoken about, and mourned the deaths of Chahala and Mijbil. (The guy who killed Mij pissed me off so much, ugh.) I loved reading about their antics and their intelligence and their beauty. I'd never want to have an otter - they sound like ten times as much work as a dog, and I don't have the patience for that - but they certainly sound captivating. I also love that, at least in the edition I read, there were photos of the otters as well as drawings of them and of other animals.

Camusfeàrna itself sounds like a place I'd love to visit, but hate to live in. The author extolls its isolation, and that to me sounds miserable. The only people within walking distance of his house were a trek up the mountain! Even most people who like quieter surroundings would, I think, find this level of isolation to be too much. It also is overall way too cold for me (probably true of Scotland in general). It seemed to be perfect for Maxwell, however.

I wonder if anyone lives there now.

I also wonder how he had the money to live as he did - ordering various supplies and materials, taking trips, owning two homes and constantly moving around while apparently not having a job other than writing. Maybe he was a very good author? I have never read anything else by him and don't know what he liked to write. He never talked about that.

I don't, unfortunately, think there's very much more to say. The book had little plot and was mostly exposition and a series of sequential short stories, which were cute and at times very funny (I laughed out loud several times, such as when he talked about his geese not leaving their cage even though the door was open), but not containing much in the way of plot. I did tear up when the dog died, though (why does the dog always die??).

Please post your reactions :) and if anyone has more direct experience with otters, I'd also love to hear about that!

I read the trilogy version, which think is abridged? I didn't realise that, and one day I'll read the full version. But I enjoyed this one.
E's great on descriptions – a symptom of a more leisured age, I think – though I did boggle a bit at the description of the house wearing “that secretive expression that is in some way akin to a young girl's face during her first pregnancy.” Whut.

I really felt for poor Mij on his journey from Basra. A bit more preparation would have been an excellent idea. Also, the casual importing of wild animals – without so much as a vet's check! Times have changed, for sure.

I like his achievement of “an otter-proof situation” in Chapter 8! there doesn't seem to be any such thing.

I've got a note on Ch 8 that his thoughts on insecurity and its effects are chilling – Stockholm syndrome described several decades early – but I can't remember what made me write that down!

I've decided that Cuthbert was my kind of saint. He sounds like an early Attenborough.

The description of the haunted ravine in Ch 9 is very eerie. He's definitely got a way with words. I'd like to visit it myself, without knowing in advance exactly what it is, to see if I pick up the same vibe. Honestly, if it's as full of wildlife as he says, I'd probably like it.

The shop assistant in Ch 10 is awesome. But the rest of the chapter is very sad. :((( That seems to be the way with all animal-human interactions, though. I suppose it's how Tolkien's Elves felt: such short lives. :((

I've also been re-reading Gerald Durrell recently, and the contrast between the attitudes of the two men, at about the same time, is quite interesting – one went out and got experience and learned about the animals and how to care for them before bringing them back to the UK, and the other started off by killing them for a living, then gradually got to know individuals. In the end, they kind of met in the middle.

The book as a whole is lovely, both as a record of a man's friendship with the wild creatures around him, and as a record of a lost way of life, and as a way of escape into a less complicated, though rawer, way of life. It's like another world, seen from today's perspective, but it's not all that long ago. A really fascinating read, on many levels.
