132...Oh let me tell you!

(Anonymous) 2008-07-07 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Back when I was in my early 20s, I helped a guy with a cast on his arm load groceries into his car in a relatively busy parking lot. He thanked me, but then he made what I thought was a really snide, shitty, and crude remark about how Ted Bundy lured so many women to their deaths by pretending to be disabled so they'd feel sorry for him and offer help. He actually had this look on his face like, "Are you SCARED, girlie???"

It REALLY fucking pissed me off that he would even think to say something so fucking callous to ANYONE who had just helped him, so I showed him the loaded gun in my purse and said, "Maybe *I* look for smartassed disabled people to kill after pretending to help them."

The expression on, and complete color drain out of his face, was TOTALLY worth my actions and I would do it again in a fucking New York minute. And believe me, I do NOT take my ownership of a firearm lightly or play it as a joke. I feel he learned his fucking lesson.

Asshole. (the guy, not you, OP)

114. Reading many different series won’t erase your memories of Harry Potter, but will perhaps cause the books to lose some of their significance in your mind.

116. God, TV Tropes. So addictive, but it can also send me into such nerd rage, sometimes. The entire section on Canon Sues, for example.

124. Mary Sues/Gary Stus really don’t belong in canon series. Original rules have different guidelines compared to fan fiction. In fan fiction, when an OC gains incredible characters and tears into center stage, unless the author is really talented, it usually turns readers off. When a protagonist gains incredible powers and goes on centre stage… well, yeah. It’s a story. They’re the main characters. They BELONG.

129. Hey… you’re right. You’d think that with the success of Dory from Finding Nemo and Jessie from Toy Story, they’d be more willing to try a main female character.

167. …I will always love you, Donna Noble.

Nerd rage, YES. I have to bite my fingers whenever I see people adding examples to tropes that DON'T FIT THE TROPE. GAAAHHHH. I feel like an asshole removing things, so I usually don't do it unless it's crazy wrong.

102. Unconditional love, what? I took the ending as being an extension of the 'trust your partner' motto they kept running throughout the game. That is to say, 'trust your partner even if he turns out to be a glowy, omnipotent being who's been lying and manipulating you all along. Not because he's a glowy, omnipotent being, but because he's your partner.' That could totally be me extrapolating, though! But I'm not sure that I see where the 'fealty' bit comes in.

129. Look, an upcoming movie with a female protagonist! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bear_and_the_Bow) Haven't checked other comments, so I don't know if you know this yet. Also, totally didn't notice that before. Guess that marketing strategy's working out well for Pixar.

125. Mmmm.

129. you know, sad to say, but it's true. Wait. Wasn't Pixar responsible for Toy Story? what about Jessie? She made the budding young feminist in me SQUEE.

153. Not only does that strike me as completely true now that you mention it, I know a guy who was just like that. He's going into law. I'm slightly scared.

166. Ahahaha, aren't all their songs about suicide anyway? I mean, I'm a fan, but I'm not proud of it.

167. The several page rant full of profanity and curses aimed at Russel T. Davies has been removed for your safety. But rest assured--the Fandom isn't doing to Donna what they did to Rose. They're supporting her, after what RTD did to her. NEVER FORGET.

I never actually stopped to think about it before, but you're right. Though, wouldn't you agree that the majority of Disney movies are have female protagonist/main characters? (There are a handful that don't, of course.) I tend to put them in the same genera; movies that children will grow up on.

I'm sure we'll have a female Pixar lead chracter in time. :3
Edited 2008-07-07 21:59 (UTC)

Re: 129

[identity profile] obnoxdwfanbrat.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem with Disney is that their female leads are almost always princesses. And some of these princesses are just badass, like Mulan and Jasmine, but some of them exist only to find their man. Most Disney movies are usually essentially romantic fantasy, emphasis on the Romance. Pixar tends to be a bit more broad in its appeal and genre choice, but the only time I can even think of a female main character of theirs who was really strong is Jessie from Toy Story... and she was really second fiddle, although frankly when you have a sequel that comes with the territory.

I'm hearing great things about Eve in Wall*E though. Almost makes me want to see it.

129.) Weirdly enough, I don't care for hardly any movie where the main lead is a girl, I loose interest quickly. I think I can list a handful where I actually liked a movie with a female as the all out lead, the only recent one I can think of is Paprika. And I'm a girl, go figure.

Re: 114

(Anonymous) 2008-07-07 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here.

I dislike all the books. I find them to be pieces of badly written tripe whose only redeeming factor lies in the fact that they got children to read (which is a small redeeming factor, really, considering there are so much better series they could read instead.). I think the time I spent reading them in the first place was time absolutely wasted, and I mentally kick myself for it every time I see a copy of one of the books lying around.

The books from your icon, however, are lovely.

116. The problem with Wikis are that anyone can edit them, and it's especially bad in a laid-back one like TVTropes. Some of the articles make excellent points, but some of them make me want to PUNCH THE COMPUTER.

129. That's why Disney also distributes Miyazaki's films. They balance each other out! Though seriously, I never noticed it before. I hope they do start making movies with female protagonists.

150. I think most people do, though I went through that phase myself. I wish there were some website we could point them all to that says "LOOK. LOOK HOW STUPID YOU ALL ACT."

162. I like Nomura's art okay. I always figured the "belts and zippers" arguement was that he puts A LOT of them on NEARLY EVERY CHARACTER. He seemed to be moving away from this some in TWEWY, though. The oufits were much more varied. Hopefully he'll keep up with that.

169. Narutoooo. I think the series has gone down the tube, but I'll always love the character.
