142. Squee A Mighty Wind secret! And yes, OP I totally agree. Their relationship is brilliant, and brilliantly acted. God, I love that film.

151. Um...drugs aren't necessarily bad for you. It depends what you're taking and how often. But then I guess I'm a hippie liberal because I love a good spliff. And let's face it Seth Rogen is now a seriously successful Hollywood person, so dope hasn't exactly fucked his life up, now has it?

No problem, the fandom seems to have evaporated or something but it's always nice seeing people who liked it back in the day. Or help them out (even by accident, lol)

109. I approve. I wish I could cook better so I could do something like that...although hey, maybe I could try. I do have the Discworld Cookbook, after all.

111. Which songs would you say are sexist? There are a lot I haven't listened to. I totally get the whole "it doesn't matter if it's ironic, it's still misogyny" thing, and usually I agree, because most people using that defense...weren't really being ironic in the first place and are just covering their asses now. But in some cases--like "The Future Soon"--the irony is obvious from the start. That's just one song, though.

117. I can understand why people would dislike Tohru, because that basic character type has been overused a lot as the archetypal feminine heroine, and while Tohru is well-written she doesn't really subvert the trope...but as I read, I continue to be impressed by how much more consistently developed and believable she is than most characters of that type.

128. I normally ship Yzak/anyone I think he'd have angry bitchfights with, but I never quite got into Kira/Yzak, because...Yzak barely ever met Kira. He just fought him from a distance. I'd have loved to see them develop that more, because the contrast between the big badass rival picture Yzak probably had of Kira, and the sweet, sincere guy he actually was, would have been hilarious.

149. That's okay. They're fantasies.

151. Maybe it's not close-minded, but it is kind of deluded, considering that studies consistently show that marijuana has no worse effects than alcohol.

Unless you mean that you think less of people when they admit to regular heavy drug use, which is a no brainer, and you shouldn't have to keep that a secret.

[identity profile] milo1047.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
111. IIRC, Skullcrusher Mountain and The Future Soon were both mentioned. I can't recall which others the OP had a problem with.

103. Some subjects take time to warm up to. I spent over a decade assuming I'd grow up to be an English major. I even got into American University and did two semesters there with English as my intended major. Then I dropped out and fucked around for a couple years and now I'm enrolled in a Historic Preservation certificate program and I love everything about what I do, even though it's not an area I ever thought I could reasonably end up in. I've never read Hetalia, I know nothing about it except what I've read in fandomsecrets, but I understand how sometimes it takes just the right inspiration to make someone realize how much they love something.

104. That is really pretty art, whatever it is.

126. I just find this rather silly.

151. Lots of shit is bad for you. Booze is bad for you. Too much internet/computer/TV is bad for you. Fatty foods are bad for you. Vitamin imbalances are bad for you. Blah blah blah blah. There are, in fact, responsible, professional, functional people who smopke pot. That movie's not really entirely about pot anyway. IMHO, it was cute, funny, rather touching, and more about a bunch of goofy antics than any kind of LOL POT RULZ kind of thing.

153. Get a Twitter account and ask him about it, or link him to some. He answers a TON of tweets from fans all the time. I'm a little curious now what he'd think of it, even though I've never read Top Gear fanfic. I just really like the show.

103. Where is that picture from?

111. Sigh. I wish I didn't agree with you.

115. The fandom is male, which means it probably isn't going to produce a lot of fic or be organized in the way you're looking for.

138-It probably isn't that hard. He seems quite giggly on his show.

146-That types pretty universal, I'd think.

151-Actually, I don't think thinking drugs are bad really explains looking down on people for finding certain movies funny.

152-Even if you don't slash them it's fun to say.

151. I'm...kind of the same way. I AM okay with that sort of thing -- it is your body, after all -- but I still can't help but think they're either deliberately harming themselves just for a temporary high, trying to escape reality rather than deal with it head-on, or some combination of both. Doing drugs != living.

139. I agree with you, but I'll never say I hate her. I don't like that type of character in general -- just not my thing -- but you do learn to sympathize with her as the series goes on.

132. And sometimes, not even a single newsletter. :(

126. I know. *remembers Empire of the Sun and goes D:*

107. I totally sympathize with you for thinking it's wrong, but your line of thinking does make sense, I guess. I find how their relationship (or lack thereof) before and after the events of the movie really fascinating for some reason.

118: I love that game, but I agree, the Game Masters (and the other one if you've played the Another Day storyline) turning into furryesque forms was quite freaky, as well as being - in my opinion - one of the weaker points of the game.

167: I hardly ever play the Maxis neighbourhoods anymore, after a BFBVFS incident I had with one. However, I agree on both points. They always had a great relationship in my game.
And yeah - if simsecret isn't "T$R is teh evilz!!!11" then it's frankensimming wank or user x sucks. It gets annoying and repetitive.

103. Well see, here's how I see it. To a lot of people "history" may just be what their teachers told them: a checklist of dry, impersonal facts about who did what, killed whom, conquered what etc etc. All numbers, borders and names with numbers in them. Hetalia could be putting some personality in it, give it a context that goes beyond mere fact-crunching, thereby leading them to rediscover history from a new perspective, one they can relate to much better than they used to. They can see the people in history as people, not as mere lines in a book.

Or they're just all squeeing fangirls who fawn over all the homolust and poorly drawn pretty men. Could be one or the other or both, I dunno.

118. Because all the reapers did it. It was kind of their thing, and if you were surprised by then, well gosh gee willy wizzle maybe you should put down the hatorade, since you are obviously so busy drinking it you missed out on the previous two bossfights.

121. Oh man, a good webcomic without an end. I hate it when a story goes unfinished.

122. My god. Are you seriously suggesting Zuko could ever ever in a hundred years be as smooth as Gomez? Get out. GET OUT OF MY INTERNET >:(

125. Damn all the people that show us wonderful dreams of high adventure and then leave us stranded as corporate reality sets in. Damn them for being so wonderful.

130. Blame him for wanting vengeance and justice, no. But wanting him to kill the whole village whereas he previously went out of his way to not injure innocents? That strikes me as just a little too self-absorbed and dickish, even for Sasuke. Here's to hoping Naruto will at least punch THAT out of him.

152. Ohoho oh you :)

159. Do tell the name of this show, if you would? Also, I wouldn't say Dexter is disgruntled so much as he's living out his true self with the murders... when I hear "Disgruntled" I think of someone who has been pushed beyond his limits and see no other option, whereas Dexter does what he does because it's a compulsion of his.

162. I'm just surprised someone else is surprised the majority of fic is going to be about homolust. Hell I understand your reasoning and agree, but still... I've pretty much given up hope at this point.

t!b 1. What be the canon?

Hetalia doesn't really have anything to do with individual people, though, which is the essence of history. So it's kind of just taking your textbook, boring "facts and numbers" brand of history and repackaging it.

132. Even better: because of the small accumulation of femslash in most fandoms, narrowing it down to good quality fic is even harder. I like an accumulation of het, slash, AND femslash, but it'd be nice for the girl/girl stuff to be as readily available. So yeah, I know where you're coming from to an extent.
