I don't mind if the military types are good or even 'heroic' in some ways (see - Aliens, for an example), but all that 'American Exceptionalism' and colonizer bullshite that's inevitably a part of most modern military/military adjacent stories is nauseating.

And, in the same vein...can we NOT have any more wallowing in the 9/11 'tragedy' please? Enough.

Edited because - yes, 9/11 was awful and tragic and sucked, but the 'hoo-rah! 'Murica!!' shite that's grown out of it all is just too fucking much.

I'm a vet, and most military-related content since 9-11 is just straight trash to me.

The only thing that's enjoyable are stories that contain people that just happen to be in the military/a military setting but are really about other themes. Sergeant Bilko is fucking hilarious.

This is something fandom is going to have to step up and include in its creative works, if we're going to have it, I think. Because the less popular the enforcement arm of the US government gets, the harder it clings to trying to indoctrinate people with sheer make-believe.

May I recommend Barry? It is recent, high quality, and is ruthlessly critical not only of veterans specifically but of the US military/military culture in general.

Idk this is a weird one for me because "corrupt/violent soldier or vet" is so common in the media I consume it's basically its own trope, so this might come down to the kinds of things you yourself seek out. (A while back a friend of mine was talking about the censorship during the Iraq war and how no one could bring up the lack of WMDs/criticize the pretext for war as false in the US media... except Green Zone, a literal Hollywood blockbuster starring Matt Damon, did exactly that back then - only she hadn't seen it because she "doesn't watch war films". Well, no shit then lmao.) Generation Kill came out in the literal 00s and was also relentlessly critical of both soldiers and US military culture and its war aims. Modern Warfare of the same vintage presents the US military as chillingly indifferent to the destruction and terror they cause and also prone to acting on bad intelligence.

But you're never going to find this if what you watch is, say, superhero films/shows, as their whole philosophy and themes are directly opposed to criticisms of institutionalized violence - they are celebrations of this. Or if what you watch are true crime serial dramas, for the same reasons. Ditto shows about "special" people who are "heroic" through violence. Generic pop dramas and sitcoms won't take it on because it's too controversial. If this is what you consume, you're never going to get what you want. You're trying to suckle milk out of a frog.

OTOH, if you want anti-military themes, pretty much anything leftist will give you what you want from the obligatory military character(s), pretty much guaranteed, even if it's pro-cop (e.g. Disco Elysium).

One of the places I actually want to go to in America is the Minnesota state fair. We have fairs here (Australia) but not to that scale as they’re mostly country fairs with sheep and cattle shows and baking and cat pavilions, and the deep fried everything is also a temptation.

It would be hilarious to have them attend various state vs county or town fairs to compare, because you get ones like the Minnesota State Fair and then you get the little dinky ones my town had which had maybe three rides, a few good and toy booths, and then a barn for 4H competitions. But by god we all were excited for it and attended every single year because it was the only real event we had.

I enjoyed this cdrama, but not to the extent of Blood of Youth. Some aspects of it just didn't come together for me - the characters weren't as compelling (which was a problem because like BoY there were so many of them to keep track of) and I went into DY hoping to see more backstory of the characters I loved in BoY... that didn't happen to the extent I wanted, unfortunately. Nobody was terrible in it, per se. There just didn't seem to be time to flesh out backstories in an interesting way, setting up the history of what went down preceding BoY. It didn't do justice to the characters of story, IMO.

Highlights:

Xiao Ruofeng/Prince Langya - LOVED seeing more of this character, since he's only talked about and appears in flashback in BoY, and the actor did a great job.

Li Changsheng - I have a soft spot for trickster immortal characters, and this guy was great. Nothing to do with the story of BoY later, but still fun to watch.

Augh I don't go here but I can see what you mean. It's really giving "men can look interesting, women have to be generically pretty" vibes. Plus like, animal heads on basically human bodies can be aesthetically cool, so can people with a couple animal features like tails/ears, but whatever is going on there is in a very offputting in-between spot. (Actually, just googled this and the main cat dude or whatever is also falling into that for me. Maybe I just don't personally have a high enough baseline appreciation of furry aesthetics or whatever though.)

Lamentablemente, es más bien un síntoma de varios de cuando Livejournal/Dreamwidth dejaron de ser la plataforma preferida para comunicaciones y fandom. Cuando todos se fueron de LJ, muchos más se fueron a Tumblr, que era de imágenes y poco soporte para texto. Cuando Tumblr valió madre, se fueron a Twitter, que tuvo sólo soporte para 140 caracteteres y puras imágenes. Ahora que Twitter está valiendo madre, capaz sea otro méndigo servicio de puras imágenes...

La neta extraño esos días, porque mínimo eran días en los que existía más enfoque en escribir y comunidad. Técnicamente se puede por AO3, pero en ese entonces LJ estaba más centralizado tanto fic como arte. El hecho de que LJ/DW no es la plataforma de fandom se refleja en las pocas comunidades de hoy en día. Digo, sé que las comunidades habla-hispana están en facebook y tiktok, pero no me vas a poder pagar para que use esas madres...

Unfortunately, it's one symptom out of many when LJ/DW stopped being the main platform for fandom communications. When everyone left LJ, people left to Tumblr, which had more image support than text. When it stopped being good, people left to Twitter, which had more image support and only 140 characters to write on. With Twitter going to the shitter, I fear it will be replaced by yet another freaking image-focused service.

Ihonestly miss those days, because at least those were days in which there was more of a focus in writing and community. Technically you get that from AO3, but back then, LJ centralized both fic and art. The fact LJ/DW is no longer the fandom platform is reflected in the lack of communities nowadays. I mean, I know most spanish-speaking communities are on Facebook and Tiktok, but you really cannot pay me to use those things...
