I think it mostly comes from the Civil War storyline from a few years ago. In the buildup to the story, a paternal-ish relationship was developed between Tony and Peter, and then in the story itself, Peter's arc was all about his loyalties being torn between Tony and Steve.

I avoid those fics like the plague. But, unlike the plague, that's actually pretty easy.

Chill out, OP.

Civil War, mostly. Since a lot of people are hoping that the MCU will culminate with Civil War, they're already in that mindset.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I fucking despise that trope. I love Tony/Steve, but I can't stand Spiderman. Fortunately there's so much Tony/Steve fic out there that it's easy enough to avoid, but it's still sometimes sad when a fic sounds interesting except for that part. :/

I can honestly say that out of everything in the Avengers fandom, nothing skeeves me out more than this. My skeeved-ness has absolutely jack-shit to do with the comics — my brain emphatically refuses to factor anything about what Marvel did to its characters in the past few years into my opinions of and feelings about them and their relationships to the point where I'm basically incapable of properly discussing them with anyone, and even so, the movieverse and comicsverse are completely separate in my mind. But this. I don't know why it affects me so much, but it just makes my skin crawl and I don't really know why. It is viscerally disgusting to me for reasons that I can't quite put my finger on, although my best guess is infantilization vibes. And Peter Parker is not Peter Parker without Aunt May and Uncle Ben. He just. Is. Not. Peter. Parker. He can be Spider-Man, but he is not Peter Parker. Origin stories and settings are vitally important to basically all superheroes, but Peter Parker even more so than pretty much any other superhero besides Superman.

Civil War. The whole thing read like Tony and Steve getting a divorce and duking it out over who got custody of the rest of the Avengers.

I read in one of the other secrets last week that this originated from the fact that some of the old comics had Peter looking up to Steve as a father figure, and then later it was Tony who was the father figure Peter looked up to. Fans just decided that, yeah, Peter has two fathers.

Maybe it's because I'm not part of the fandom so I don't come across it often, but I don't have a problem with it. Fandom of any kind always does whatever they want.

I think it's kind of cute, but I was never really that into Spiderman except for the 90s cartoon and I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I'm getting more into Spiderman now that I'm watching Ultimate Spiderman, but that makes the Superfamily AU even easier to imagine what with movie!SHIELD and Aunt May hardly playing a meaningful role in the show.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
A hint: don't read things you already know you won't like. Ignore them and find something you do like.

There. Problem solved.

Also, yeah, fandom revolves in on itself and fanon becomes what people work out of it. It happens that way in a lot of fandoms. No big deal.

Superfamily fic was good...before the Avengers movie came out...

The only thing good about Superfamily fic nowadays is it's the #1 indicator that it's going to be a bad!fic with OOCness everywhere so it's easy to avoid OOC SteveTony.

I do wonder about why people can't just avoid things they don't like. Thats what I do, it's also what tumblr saviour is for if you're on there OP.

However something like this I find completely harmless and adorable. Besides, Peter is such a fanboy in cannon, I don't think he'd mind.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's not as weird to me as Clint/Coulson. I mean even before this movie came out people were pairing them all over and I do not understand! And then they never even speak in the movie, either. I don't get it. I could see people thinking Pepper/Coulson, but this just doesn't make sense.

I'm not into Avengers, but my best friend is--and Superfamily is all she can talk about. I humored her at first and even found some of the fanart cute (I like my slash with kids sometimes, but generally prefer a single father falling in love and that being where the kid comes from), but now I'm just so over the art and gifs and headcanon and all :/

I have nothing against it, I just really, really am tired of it. I don't want to tumblrsavior my best friend but...

I don't know, but personally, if I never encounter Steve/Tony again it will be too soon.

Their shippers annoyed me before the movie and now it's even worse. Entitlement levels on par with Kirk/Spock and Sherlock/Watson shippers, for real.

I understand where the superfamily came from because it does have a lot of canon support. What I don't get it why people do it with Andrew!Spidey and not Tobey!Spidey. (And do realize that the superfamily thing started before we even got the trailer for the new Spiderman movie.) I suspect it was due to a few very influential artists in the fandom who promoted the shit out of it by accident due to their artwork but I'm not going to point fingers.

Yeah I really dislike this. And I mean there's all this fanwork with them LITERALLY raising Peter. Do you realize how important Peter's past is to him as a character? Like, he would be a completely different person if you gave him schmoopy TonyxSteve parents?

terabient: Anime-styled profile pic that is kinda, sorta like me (Default)

[personal profile] terabient 2012-07-17 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Superfamily baffles me for a lot of reasons, but unlike a lot of other unexpected fandom things (like the popularity of Clint/Coulson) I've never seen an explanation about its appeal from people who actually like it.

It's such an odd concept, I kind of wish someone who likes it would write some long-winded defense of it just so I could understand where all the fic/art/gif sets come from.

I don't really mind that other people like it, but it's personally kind of offputting to me. I can't see Tony as being a very good father tbh. And I REALLY don't like the idea of Aunt May and Uncle Ben not raising Peter. I love those guys.
