I kinda agree.

But from a Doylist POV, ASH wanted to have less screentime so that he could spend time with his family and well... this was a way to do it without killing him off which I think was important given how dark the previous season had been.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was one of those things where I think weird plot twists have to be forgiven because of real world circumstances. On the other hand, it definitely makes very little sense. I didn't really like what they did with Giles anyway...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
The previous season?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
A way, yes. A really nonsensical way. Giles' character was royally shat on by TPTB in service to glorifying a certain other one whom I shan't name because apparently disliking a fictional character deserves an anon personal attack and I've had enough of those.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Why is this a secret? I thought most everyone felt this way? I always thought he did the right thing so maybe it just seemed to me like yours was the majority opinion.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
How is this a secret? He acknowledges in-show that it was a horrible idea and he shouldn't have left.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Giles isn't psychic and he left a year after Joyce died, when all he could see was Buffy continuing to use him as a crutch instead standing on her own. If you can see all the cards, maybe the timing was awful, but Giles is a character not an audience member.

Yep, Buffy was just spinning her wheels in terms of emotional development with him always around. She needed to learn how to grow up and deal with things on her own without always running to someone, and he was just trying to help her do that.

I'm still really fucking pissed that Buffy's friends kicked her out of HER OWN FUCKING HOUSE.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto. And Dawn's 'it's my house too' was such bullshit. It's funny I didnt do a rewatch of this series until last year and my thoughts on Buffy in this season have completely changed.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
That was so stupid. I mean, how exactly? You are a guest in someone's house and you just tell them to take a hike? Bullshit.

I agree, but without it I don't think we would have got Spike's "You're a hell of a woman" speech, which never fails to bring me to tears.

Her friends always think they know better than her and lecture her. Particularly Xander, but Willow too (beginning of season 3 was bad as well, I mean, yes, she left, but she had to kill the man she loves, what's wrong with you people?).

And the frustrating thing is that the tone of the show is usually that Buffy is wrong and everyone else is right.

Maybe I'm in the minority but one of the things I loved about Buffy was that she got called out on her actions. I have trouble watching/reading superhero/hero stories for too long if the hero is always supposed to be in the right and always has the support of their loyal friends. Real relationships don't work like that, and heros who have a lot of power always inevitably make bad decisions.

That being sad, the thing about getting kicked out of her house that bugged me is that it was this big dramatic moment that... amounted to nothing. They quickly all got back on the same page, which we needed for the finale but it was definitely missing more character moments to both set up kicking out Buffy and to have them make up. But season 7 is like my least favorite of all the seasons, I don't even remember much from it because I barely rewatch any of it.

She was also an adult, and part of being an adult is having to deal with shit like that and not having everyone else arrange their lives around you. Giles did the best he could, but the guy had his own life to live. Plus Tony Head had had his fill of America and wanted the fuck out, and who could blame him for that.

Did you see all the episodes leading up that where he stayed and she handed all of her non-slaying responsibilities over to him? I can't see how his staying would have done anything but make her more dependent on him than she already was. If that's even possible, that is.

I was just upset because Giles was always my favorite and the series felt like it took a nosedive when he left.

But yeah, as others have said Tony Head wanted to spend more time with his family. The story may not have gone that way if he didn't.

Giles was torn about the decision (remember he even sang about it lol) but it probably wouldn't win him any awards for being the most supportive person ever. But remember Buffy was not his child, he already went above and beyond his responsibilities with her. I think as viewers we often forget this because we got so accustomed to their father and daughter like bond.

I knoooowwwww ohgodithurts but it makes sense, I guess, that he wasn't privy to the whole picture in the way the audience was and he couldn't see how much terribleness she had to wade through

I really hated how the show wrote Giles leaving. I know ASH wanted to leave, but I feel like the writers should've come up with a better reason than "Well, I know your mom died recently and you dropped out of college to raise your sister and then you literally died saving the world and got ripped out of heaven and are obviously suffering from some considerable depression and all, but stop being so needy and act like an adult, I'm out." The whole thing just left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not really fond of how the last two seasons treated Giles in general (or the last two season at all. But the Giles thing is part of that).

I agree 100 percent. What he did was inexcusable. When someone is drowning, you don't decide to toss them a brick and tell them 'get strong'.

I was pissed at Giles for the rest of the show, after that, and never forgave him.

The whole thing was made even worse by the fact that Giles left the episode after finding out that Buffy was in Heaven rather than Hell. That revelation did nothing to sway his feelings? He didn't think about maybe cutting his Slayer some slack?

There's no question that Buffy makes a lot of mistakes in the series, but in later seasons the supporting characters do a completely shit job of forgiving or offering support. Willow moves into Buffy's house and doesn't assist with the finances at all even as Buffy is drowning under bills. Xander is judgmental as fuck throughout. (One of the great moments is when he's berating her for her difficult decision to kill Anya and she finally points out, "I killed ANGEL." Girl has had a miserable life.) And then Giles, her father in all but name, abandons her in her greatest time of need.

I love the Scoobies, but day-um. They all needed lessons in basic friendship. (RIP Tara, who was the only one who ever got it.)
