Some ground rules:

I still think the SnK manga is just...bad. I read the first few chapters, dropped it, and recently read the last 2-3 chapters out of curiosity. http://img.mangastream.com/cdn/manga/76/2332/05.png that bottom panel is embarrassing, ok? And throughout the chapters it kept doing this thing were "important" plot information was concealed for no real reason. For example, Levi is making an illegal proposal to some guy to help them with a plan, and has three conditions for him. We don't get to hear condition 1, though; he just jump-cuts to condition 2. And I get this is to keep interest in what condition 1 is, but it just seems like such lazy writing-- the author really can't think of a more organic way to keep things exciting other than heavy-handed-ly concealing info? The same thing happened in another scene with different characters. It was eye-roll inducing.

Saucery. I just don't like her writing and think a lot of her stories come off really creepy when I don't think that was the intent.

Helenish. Not because I hate her writing, she's actually an amazing author, but because her fic almost always hits my trope kink buttons but then they are usually so fucking depressing I end up wanting to kill myself by the time I've finished reading them. I have grown to hate them because of this. So close to wish fic fulfillment, yet so very far!

On the note of wanting fandom to come back, I feel like there should be more ways to increase visibility for Dreamwidth/DW communities, but I also feel like all my attempts to get people interested are either met by a brick wall (stupid DW evangelists!!) or radio silence.

Some of the problem with the people I've been friends with has been the people who created/run DW. There's old fandom wank that goes back with those names and people just don't want to deal with them.

Up until now, I have refrained from making a secret about this, because I feel like I am being petty and whiney, but I guess I will just get this off my chest.

I am baffled by the most popular fic in my fandom. I read half of it once, gave up, and then came back to it recently because I thought there had to be more to it if so many people like it. It's in the realm of almost-good, but the plot falls apart to make way for romance-drama and it is peppered with canon errors. On AO3, it is consistently at the top when you sort by kudos, whereas all the ones that hover just beneath it are significantly better (and many feature a more popular pairing than #1, which you'd think would draw attention to them).

This is such a stupid thing to be so annoyed about, but I can't seem to get over it.

Oh come on, tell us the fic.

And as for being annoyed and baffled for it, I don't think it's whiny at all. I hate it when fic fets canon wrong but I can let it pass to a certain degree. However if all these little details or major ones they're getting wrong, it ruins the fic for me. Especially if they're getting a character's personality so wrong.

I like drawing fanart. But it's pretty disappointing when I barely get any feedback. I put all this effort into it and I feel like no one enjoys it. (I'm pretty decent if I can toot my own horn)

I think it's partly because I draw rarer pairings or just solo characters. I've noticed when I did a popular ship the likes multiply 10 fold. And probably because I'm not a BNF or anything.

That's strange anon, to me it's always seemed like fan artists are well loved /get lots of attention. I assume by likes you post on tumblr. Do you use proper tags? Or ever submit to fan dedicated blogs if there are some? Notes on tumblr are really more about who reblogs your posts rather than the content, honestly.

I don't trust shipping rivals anymore.

What makes things worse is my friend is taking her damn time playing through Azran Legac, and ships the hell out of DesLay. I won't spoil her, but man, I am so very, very uncomfortable with it but can't tell her why, just that shipping in Layton is weird for me, which is unconvincing.

However, I do know from our experiences in Kill La Kill that she will not take it well. Am I an ass for being excited about that?

Not reading your full comment because I've not played that game yet. But I also cannot ship in Layton games. Except the canon ships, of course.

Layton himself is just too gentlemanly. I imagine him being not angry, just disappointed at me in his gentle way.

Same thing for Cabin Pressure, if slightly less so. I ship it hard, then I remember John Finnemore's lovely kind face and never post my shameful fics.

It's more seeing the response from people going, "HA! SEE! HERMIONE LOVES HARRY INSTEAD!" and just... totally missing the point since Harry was barely mentioned in it. At any rate, the full interview showed that, no, she DIDN'T actually regret it in the end.

...But yeah, I get what you mean. It actually reminded me how much I adore them together.

I think people expect way too much out of Teen Wolf and have rose tinted glasses for the first season.

Teen Wolf is a shit show. It has always been a shit show. And it will continue to be a shit show and I say this as someone who loves it and watched every episode.

Also Sterek fans are fucking nuts.

It was a fun shit show the first two seasons though. And at least it made some sort of loose sense, now it's just a pile of contradicting nonsense of a shit show that doesn't even have any loveable or fun left in it.

I like Sterek in fandom (does not work for me at all in canon) and I kind of agree. But I think any of the hardcore fans in TW are fucking nuts. Not even with ships, but just...crazy fans. There are a lot in this fandom.

I've just realized that how much I like a male character is directly proportional to how much I want to see him hurt/abused (and then taken care of and recovering, it's basically a hurt/comfort thing that I really love), and how much I like a female character is directly proportional to how much I want to see them being amazing strong wonderful kickass goddesses (but never hurt/abused, it just makes me upset).

Sometimes (although not always, a lot of my OTPs are m/m or f/f) with the aforementioned female characters comforting the aforementioned male characters.

I feel kind of skeevy about that first part.

I do the same. But it's not about looks, it's about story and personality and character. So it's not really a "want to see" like a visual thing, but a narrative thing? Idk how to explain it. But it's mostly only with male characters. I generally do not want that with ladies, I want them being badass and dominant and saving people.

I've never really thought about the divide and how that might be weird until I read your post.

I know Haru Wo Daite Ita for one but I'm blanking and the last, like, five I've read the (consensual) action starts and so do the waterworks.

Been a while since I read it, but Rules by Miyamoto Kano is pretty mature in that regard. It avoided a lot of the uglier Yaoi tropes, and I can't recall anyone crying (in bed, at least)

I'm writing a fic with a sort of pre-slashy playfull mood. In the movie the heroes have some conflicts which get completely resolved in the end. The ending is very idealistic with them finishing each others sentences, holding hands and joking. So I just don't know how to infuse a fic with any drama. I'm thinking someone could try to mug them, but it doesn't match a warm feel I'm trying to do in this fic. Any advice?

Maybe some family/friend drama - a relative or friend is getting married and thus, wedding frenzy; a relative or friend is having a baby; someone needs help with a big project (holiday meal, charity event, company picnic, school fun fair, fun run).

It's a little hard to come up with something appropriate without much context.

So, I do HabitRPG, and I just joined a party where the goal is to write 30 letters in the month of April. One of the letters is supposed to be directed to my closest internet friend, which got pathetic pretty quickly, as I stopped talking to my last internet friend about five years ago. It ended up being about you, fandomsecrets, who are always here when I need you to be and don't notice when I just can't be arsed to pretend to care.
