I'm not anti-vaccine, so just putting that out there at the get go. But I also think it's silly of you to think that you're somehow more knowledgeable on the subject than she is. Since you don't know her personally, you really couldn't say why she's of that opinion.

An acquaintance of mine has a doctorate in psychology and she also didn't vaccinate her kids.

The following statement does not refer to either the acquaintance or the actress, but let's keep in mind that lots of "idiots" have PhD's because all it takes is hard work, following the bureaucratic guidelines, self-discipline and the sort of intelligence that makes it easy for you to understand abstract concepts, fill out forms, do math - you know what I'm talking about.

I also listened to Mayim Balik on Howard Stern and ... I just don't know about the attachment parenting thing.

It just makes you irrational - which in not something a PhD can fix.

Because it's impossible that she actually did her research and came to an informed opinion that doesn't happen to match yours? From everything I've seen of Mayim Bialik, this is a woman who does her research. Every single issue she is questioned about has a solid basis in fact, logic and reason. Look up anything with her talking about long-term breastfeeding, the family bed, her reasoning behind being Orthodox...she puts deep thought behind what she believes in. Maybe it's not what you see as right, but you can bet she's not blindly following anyone.

It's very easy to start fearing shots though. I thought about getting a new HPV vaccine, just because, but after reading about some terrible side effects I decided against it. I don't know why, but all US pharmaceutical companies especially evoke mistrust. Scratch that, all and any medicine evokes mistrust.

But neuroscience isn't medicine. Like, research about how the brain works often uses tools that are also used in medicine, but she probably never did any research involving vaccines. So it's not like working at NASA while believing the moon landing was faked, more like working at NASA while ...idk, believing that an all-powerful singularity is going to arise and save humanity or something.

Who gives a shit what a (non-practicing) neuroscientist thinks about vaccination. Try to find me an immunologist who doesn't "believe" in vaccines, then I'll be shaking my head. You might as well have been scandalized that someone with their PhD in literature is anti-vax.

fun slightly off topic fact: my dad worked at NASA for a bit and believed the moon landing was fake. He worked some lower level job (I don't know the details), he wasn't a scientist there or anything but... yeah.

Based on what I've seen here (attachment parenting and obviously anti-vaxxing), she honestly sounds overprotective and paranoid about her children's health and preoccupied with trying to create a bubble around them. Paranoia can lead people to do illogical things and come to illogical, even destructive, conclusions that do more harm than good in the long run. It's similar to being superstitious.

She better hope and pray that her kids don't get ill.

Being a PhD in Neuroscience and being anti-vaccine is like being an astronomer and disagreeing with heliocentrism. It's flat out wrong. Most opinions are valid (or at least understandable), but facts are not opinions or beliefs. You cannot disagree with facts; that's what makes them facts. How do you disagree with something that has been proven so thoroughly to be true, unless you're doubting the nature of reality itself? There is so much evidence supporting vaccine use and denying that vaccines are harmful to most people (excepting allergies, contra-indicative conditions, etc), and no actual (non-faked, non-paid-for-by-lobbyists) evidence against vaccine use. I do think you are at bad science if you are anti-vaccine. It's absolutely wonderful to go "are you sure?" at the results of a study, but only if you're trying to catch mistakes or anomolous results, but there is so much evidence that I think it's disingenuous to be skeptical at it. It's kind of like saying "Are you sure water is made of hydrogen and oxygen?"

If you're a doctor and tell me there are 218 bones in the human body, I'm not letting you operate on me. If you're a mathematician who thinks 2x6=26, then I'm not letting you become a math teacher. If you're a geographer, and tell me Thailand is in Africa, I'm not following your maps. If you're an electrician, and tell me a household circuit is 300V, you don't get to wire my house - you don't even get to plug in my toaster. If you "disagree" with a proven fact (and you're not doing a thought experiment), then I think you're a right idiot, and you really deserve having your credentials reviewed.

I'm not saying Mayim Balik is completely stupid (I actually don't know much about her at all), but smart people can be wrong. I do understand that neuroscience is different from neurology, but she's still smart enough to do research, and there's no possible way for her to earnestly be anti-vaccine. If I can speculate, she's probably trying to make research (the falsified vaccines -> autism study, personal anecdotes, fearmongering) fit her pre-existing opinions, instead of reforming her opinions to fit the evidence. Not all scientists are good at being scientists, just like there are occasionaly lawyers who don't law well, or judges with bad judgement.
