I loved it.

But then I grew up reading the manga and not watching the anime. So I don't have a lot of nostalgia specific to the anime. So yeah. I enjoyed it a lot.

So am I. The first episode of Crystal was just lifeless and had such stilted, cheap animation.

It was pretty much exactly what I expected it to be. I enjoyed it, it felt like a love-letter to the manga. Can't wait for Mercury in two weeks.

I loved it. I've accepted a long time ago that this was going to keep up with current animation. I think that's why I was so impressed by the backgrounds and the cute little arts that would come up before/after commercial.

Speaking as someone who only recently got into Sailor Moon, yeah. Crystal just lacks the appeal and personality of the original series. Like every little detail of the first episode was better executed in the 1992 version. With a 20 year gap I would've expected some kinda improvement??? But this time the staff is just a bunch of nobodies working with a shoestring budget. Really sad.

I enjoyed it! I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did, seeing as I grew up on both the anime and the manga (seriously, Sailor Moon was my life between the ages of 4-8). The character designs have grown on me, but the transformation is still eeeeh... I think they do a great job with the CGI ribbons at the beginning, but the shading they used just looks so off (as shown in your screencap).

i can't say anything for the plot because i haven't watched yet, but all the gifs and such i've seen on tumblr make me ugh. i really hate the art style though i can't exactly pinpoint why. i feel like even for anime/sailor moon style their heads are small. and the colors are weird. dunno. i have no real nostalgia for sailor moon (i was a gundam wing kid...) so i'm not that upset over it.

I miss the cartoon faces that Usagi used to make. Yeah, I know that sounds weird since I am talking about a cartoon. But her faces were so over the top. I am hoping in the next few episodes we will see them.

Maybe I'm just uncultured, but I really don't understand all of the complaints about the art style. We'd been re-watching the old series in the weeks before Crystal premiered, and...it just doesn't look all that different to me. What am I missing that everyone else is seeing?

Seriously. Usagi has two expressions OoO and O-O. It's like she had a stroke and can barely move her facial muscles. The cgi is just awful. I honestly think the 90's animation sequence was leagues ahead, even if it's dated.

I don't know why, but the colors are jarring for me, too. I guess I was so used to the more blue-ish/darker tones that felt more moonish to me. The bright colors make it look cheap to me.

I really enjoyed it.

Yeah, the cgi transformation was... eeeeh, but I liked the hat tip to the original anime with the way the episode progressed, and I really liked the bits they DID change. I liked that Usagi was a much stronger character in this one than the original anime, and she seems to have more substance. I liked that she didn't cower in a corner for hours until Tuxedo Mask rescued her. Not that the original anime was BAD of course (I love it and always will), but I like this one for different reasons.

But again, the transformation scene was... iffy. I felt like she got super limby (stretchy and long limbs) for most of it, which was bizarre at best. I didn't mind the CGI aspect (unless CGI is super in your face terrible I rarely mind it), but again... Limby.

This secret prompted me to go watch the first episode. I'm disappointed so far too. A minute and 14 seconds of scrolling space and an angelic choir before we even see the moon in a 24 minute episode of a show called Sailor Moon is a bit much.

I still don't like the CG animated parts, but after watching it again the show is growing on me. I love the part where Usagi had to go back for her school bag after walking away from Mamoru.

After doing some research on it, it sounds like it's more of a love letter project by the staff (every newspaper article I've seen has mentioned them wanting to provide a show for the girls who grew up watching it) versus a huge reboot that would have gotten an equally huge budget. It's only being distributed online on an off-schedule, which means it's not on a channel like most shows, so all the television funds that may have come in to supplement the animation money are probably nonexistent. Sailor Moon also doesn't need the kind of merch investment that a new series normally promises, since people will buy it regardless, so I don't think that aspect will bring in more fund money, either.

That said, I still think it's frustrating that they delayed it for so long and caused even more hype in the meantime, but a lot of people who haven't watched anime in years and picked up Crystal won't know what the trends or current animation looks like, so they'll have no problem with it/won't understand the complaints. This also includes a majority of the original fans in Japan itself, if we go by the premiere audience. They loved every minute of it. I hope the later episodes show some improvements, though. I know animating up to the last minute is a pretty common thing, but hearing that this was the same way even after the extra time was confusing.
