Basically. I have a Polish friend, and she says the feeling of "impending war" has been going on for a while there now. They even have pre-emptively installed some refugee camps, apparently.

The UK is part of NATO. We would STOMP Russia even if our clout has diminished through the rise of countries such as China, India, Brazil, etc.

They're not suicidal.

That's a fair point, tbh. It's the only thing that makes me optimistic - Russia wouldn't go against NATO. Still, this does nothing to guarantee there won't be a full-scale Cold War with a global European energy crisis and similar shit.

Sure tell that to us in Norway who have been battling over tiny pieces of land* with Russia for years upon years and we are also members of NATO. We might not be shooting at each other, but the submarines/planes they send across the border ain't that much fun. Nor are the armed guards at the Russia/Norway border, but at least they stay in their own country instead of trying to take ours.

Not seeing NATO putting an end to that, or even worse: Ukraine

*Well ocean and the fish in the ocean, but same diff.

Can I join you in exclaiming "well shit"? I'm Russian and the sight of newspaper headlines makes my blood run cold every day. I am aware I'm a paranoid alarmist by nature, but there's NOTHING about this situation that I like and it depresses me to no end.

We do not, in fact, live in a post-historical society, I keep thinking. Any sort of shit can happen. Russian political and economic climates are steadily getting worse, and I see no cause for optimism. Who's to say the 21st century will not be as bad as, or worse than, the 20th one? We're still only in the beginning of it.

Your sentiments are almost identical to mine. I am also somewhat of a paranoid alarmist, but the very fact that there is something to be extremely paranoid and alarmed about right now is terrifying me.

This is what I've been thinking too. Who's to say what's going to happen? All we can do is hope and pray that peace prevails. I think people are too complacent in assuming that we're past wars. Humanity is never past conflict, it's our greatest failing as a species.

One thing to perhaps bolster a sense of optimism:

Globalization has made war on the scale of WWI or WWII completely unfeasible

We are much too economically interdependent to have war on that scale be profitable.

The US for example was extremely isolationist when the first two World Wars broke out. Nowadays, ALL of our interests our tied up abroad.

China and India are also rising giants, which is diminishing US influence and thus making unilateral policymaking a thing of the past.

The developed global community simply cannot AFFORD to be at each others' throats even if they want to.

I feel optimistic. Oil prices will rise, Ukraine will ship all the weapons somewhere else, etc. I really hope that Ukraine isn't in for a long civil war here, like so many other countries.

I'm worried about new laws that keep popping up in Russia the last few years though. What will the government come up with next? Democracy is dead.

This is all certainly true, and I agree very emphatically with the idea that we do not live in a post-historical society.

That said, a hot war between the UK or US and Russia (or, indeed, between any nuclear powers barring India and Pakistan) is incredibly unlikely to ever happen. Most countries just aren't that crazy. So I wouldn't worry about that, specifically.

Not to say that internal political conditions won't be bad or proxy wars won't happen, because they probably will.

I hope that never happens. Russia is such a huge landmass filled with almost nothing that it's probably impossible wadge war on.

Even given actual war between Russia and the US / UK - which will not happen - the idea of a land invasion of Russia is... inconceivable. It's just insane. I don't know if I can really bring across exactly how much that's not going to happen.

This thread makes me feel so old. For the first 13 years of my life 'being ready for war with Russia' was the usual state of being. (Well, the Soviet Union, but nobody in the West made that distinction in those days.)

Late as late can be, but...I'm hoping that it won't come to that if only because Russia would have some trouble finding allies. The general impression I've got from various [non-us] news sources and heard from friends that the general opinion towards Russia in most places seems to be that Russia is being pretty insane right now.

That said, if it did come down to war with Russia...Yeah, I think Russia would lose to NATO + Whoever else allied with them. (It's not just going to be NATO members who'll be worried about Russia if a war does start given recent behavior - particularly given the fact they made a pretty under-handed effort to expand their borders with Ukraine.)

It wouldn't be an easy victory, but...well. It would most likely be a victory eventually, at high cost.
