Inspired by 7 - What types of book endings make you furious?

In general, though if you have specific endings of books that made you mad, feel free to share!

1) It was all a dream.
2) Deus ex machina quick-fix.
3) Random last-minute couples to making things that had no previous real romantic hints have a "happy ending". Bah, and humbug.

Suddenly pulling out a moral that has fuck-all to do with what came before. For instance, I sometimes see books pull out a religious message after going through the entire story without ever mentioning religion.

There was one book, I can't remember the name for the LIFE of me, where for the whole book there was the buildup for a gay couple, they got together, and then the epilogue is one of the guys and his wife.

Out of nowhere.

Out of flipping nowhere.

I'm not sure she was even a character before the epilogue nowhere.

Total destruction. I read a 10,000 page novel (literally) about a fictional town. It's a family saga spanning 400 years. In the end, the town is destroyed during a hurricane. WTF.

Then again, it's still one of my favorites. But... why?

Babies. I love kids. I have a kid! But not everybody wants a kid and there's no reason to show it every damn time anyway. If it's well-established that it's something they want then it doesn't bother me as much.

(See: J K Rowling and a huge number of Regency romance novels. Also The Hunger Games, although that had other specifics that made it especially aggravating.)

When the designated good guys act like assholes, pass up every opportunity either by malice or ignorance to help the villains or understand their issues and dismiss them as absolute unrepentant evil instead, then ride off into the sunset patting themselves on the back.

This is a surprising number of books.

Very few books have pissed me off enough to throw the book across the room with a growl and a curse.

Thomas Harris' Hannibal novel, on the other hand…

Characters dying for nothing but the sake of shock value, or to make them martyrs.

I read through the Divergent trilogy (I know, I know...) and the ending really annoyed me. :| it's like why did I read all that?

Honestly, nothing frustrates me more than a character or relationship that was nicely developed earlier on suddenly just not getting as many scenes or stuff to do, like the author didn't know where to leave them or lost interest.

Re: Inspired by 7 - What types of book endings make you furious?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-01 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's one book ending that necessarily makes me mad - any ending, from Rocks Fall Everyone Dies to Happily Married with Babies to Shocking Twist all CAN work. Every ending, if you strip it down of the details, is a cliche, so it either works for the story or it doesn't.

That being said, I do feel endings have to be thematically predictable. As in, they should fit in with the theme of the story. Twist endings or sudden surprises generally should somehow have some hints - doesn't have to be hints you catch the first read-through, but if you go read it again, maybe bits and pieces you catch.

But I generally don't like endings where everything is wrapped up neatly with a bow. I also don't like epilogues where they are Married with Kids if the romance in question is with kids or young teens, because it usually feels cheesy and unrealistic that two twelve year olds who held hands in the story never dated anyone else. Plus, I think epilogues are generally unnecessary unless there are unanswered questions or a glimpse into the future is absolutely necessary.

1. Happily ever after with no consequences.
2. Everyone dies or is miserable at the end.
3. No real ending or even the start of closure.

If a big setup has no payoff.

Like I remember reading a book about a guy deserting the army to try and get home to his girlfriend and when he's within sight of her house and she's waving to him he gets found and shot for desertion.

That was it. A whole book about him trying to get back and he fails. The end. I'm ok with a heroic sacrifice to accomplish a goal, but just Failure The Book pisses me off.

Endings without a point. If it doesn't answer the "so what?" question, then why in the hell did I read it? Why did the characters go through this? How did this get published?

The worst example I've recently seen was Neil Gaiman's "The Ocean at the End of the Lane". I normally think Gaiman does great endings, but this one made the whole book stink. The main character doesn't even walk away with a lesson learned! Oh great, there's been an incremental improvement for the female character - one which the main character won't remember and the end result of which we don't and will never see. Gee, thanks? Maybe I missed the point, but if it was so subtle that I couldn't find it, I'd say it failed in making it.

Ahoy! Happy chitter-chat!

Does changing a character's sexuality/sexual habits make a fic OOC (or AU)?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-02 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
This is late so I'm not sure how many people will see it, but anyway.

Obviously there's a lot of people assuming characters are straight because they've only had relationships with the opposite sex in canon, even though they could always be bi, but I'm talking about instances where there it's actually been specifically stated that the character is straight. Would making said character gay in a fic mean it's OOC or that it should be considered an AU?

Or what about making a character that's bi in canon completely gay in a fic? (Or straight, I suppose, but that has unfortunate implications.)

Or how about making a character who, in the canon, has sex with a ton of different people (or is just really enthusiastic about how much they like sex) asexual? Or vice versa (although admittedly characters who are asexual, or could be interpreted that way, are much rarer)?

Or, in the rare case that it would actually come up in a canon, how about making a character who's said that they're either very vanilla or very kinky the opposite?

I frequently find myself wanting to write fic where characters' sexuality is vastly different than it is in canon, but I never do because I'm afraid there will be a bunch of comments like "OMG this is so OOC!" because a character's sexuality is different than what it is in canon. I think labeling it AU fixes that, but is it really AU if everything else is the same as in the canon except this one thing?

I don't know. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Really small advice, please

(Anonymous) 2017-10-02 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
You know how when you're really, really drawn to a stranger? Like maybe they're famous or a BNF or just not in your social circle, and based on what tidbits you know about them, you feel like you want to be friends with them more than anything else in the world? That's what I'm suffering from right now. I'm extremely attracted to a famous person (but in a platonic way) and I feel like I'm just dying to be close to them. (Don't worry, I haven't sent any creepy letters or anything.) How do I get over it and just be a normal fan?
