i fail to understand this secret

103

(Anonymous) 2009-02-26 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I get it, i do. Tons (probably most) fandoms focus on the m/m relationships even if they're not even CLOSE to being cannon and usually stick the women (who're supposed to be the cannon to their slash relationship) on the altar to burn.

Though there are a few shows where the slash involve shoving the men up there and rooting for the f/f side of the story.

No offense intended, i know loads of wonderful feminists and i'm sure you were just angry when you wrote this and it probably comes off more hostile and whatnot than you intended.

But, really. Really, really? Have we so quickly reverted to where using something that isn't socially acceptable in a show (and or fandom) is worth wanking over?

There are shows making fun on feminists, transsexuals, misogynists, homosexuals, lesbians, Americans, Arabs, whatever.

So when shows use misogynistic males, it's automatically a reason to bring out the torches? Just because they didn't want and or have a strong female lead? That's ridiculous. Not every show is going to be driven towards that, and not ever fandom will either.

Let's be honest, every woman in the world wants to be the female (and in some cases) male counterpart to their favorite shows hero, even if that means hating on one of the characters just because of the role they play.

i don't like other girls, i only have male friends... that makes you and idiot, and a dumbass.

that's got to be the most hateful, cruel thing i've ever heard.

I never had any close female friends when i was growing up i stuck with the guys it wasn't because i hate girls, the just didn't seem to like me which wasn't a big deal, we didn't have a lot in common, i didn't really find any women i got along with until college.

Your secrets talks about all the strides women have made, and the things they fought for to make us equal.

Part of being equal is dealing with the fact that not everyone agrees with you, not everyone likes everything you like. Especially that not every little thing (especially something a invalid and FICTIONAL as fandom) is trying to stick it to those accomplishments and values.

Like i said, this is in no way trying to be mean. I get it that you're sick of women hating on women...for being women. But the reason they're hating on women is driven from the perspective of a fictional primetime show, they're not trying to stab their female-coworker in the back so their male-coworker can get her job.

Yes! Thank you!

I was particularly troubled by the pseudo-feminist character in Ratatouille. She has a valid critique and should be a character you root for, but instead she just perpetuates the feminazi stereotype. :(

And as much I adored Wall-E, I was really troubled by Eve. And why do robots need genders anyway?

114. If written well, the event could honestly be a dividing choice - neither side is right or wrong - but all the writers seemed to believe Iron Man was wrong and wrote him evil. (Me? I'm with the X-men. Or with Nextwave. Screw that shit, I'm going over here. But that's not the point.)

124. Bella should’ve picked the werewolf anyway. Go for it, girl.

129. Oh, bummer, dude. I went through that phase a while ago. Hopefully it’ll go away like mine did.

154. I agree with you… besides the calling people faggots part. That made me a little angry. But whatev, man.

120. Yeah. How could you not? The man was brillant. Have you ever read 'Contact'? Much better than the movie.

144. Holy shit. I totally did not know he was the kid from 'Midnight'. Now I'm going to have to give Merlin a shot.

167. Demetri Martin is pretty hott, but he's damn funny too. Maybe you should just listen and not watch. (Off to me office. Hold me calls. Yar.)

103: Yeah, self-hating women are really obnoxious, but aren't there girls that just don't relate to other girls very well? "I only have male friends" =/= "I don't like other women."

also, re: strong female characters-- when a writer goes out of his/her way to create a "strong female character" instead of making a character that fills a unique place in the cast, is developed as a human being and written sympathetically, can take care of herself, AND is a girl... well, those kind of characters can come off as Mary Sues, because they're supposed to be super-competent and not have any obvious flaws. (And IMO? "Girls need to be strong all of the time" is as unrealistic as "girls need to be submissive and pretty.")

146: What is this? It looks pretty.

154: On one hand, Marluxia is heterosexual in my headcanon, too, mostly because shipping him with anybody but Larxene doesn't do it for me. On the other hand... um, that's really not a polite word to use, especially not so much, and you're probably going to get flamed by a lot of people and I can't say I really blame them.

Most yaoi fans don't care if everyone else likes it. She probably just thinks you're cool with it because you keep playing along that you're cool with it. If your girlfriend is a rational person, she'll accept it if you tell her, "It's not that you're a bad artist, but I don't like yaoi/yaoi makes me kind of uncomfortable, especially because I think fandom got Marluxia's personality really wrong. Could you not show me that stuff anymore?" Aaaaand, if she's not a rational person, you don't want to be dating that. Mmmkay?

Re: 103

eah, self-hating women are really obnoxious, but aren't there girls that just don't relate to other girls very well? "I only have male friends" =/= "I don't like other women."

The secret was specifically referring to the "I hate other women" variety. You know, the ones who are are like "every single woman on this planet is a vapid, catty bitch so I hate them all". A few of these gems have cropped up in the comments, even. There's nothing wrong with having male friends.

[identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
103. Well, I'm not into slash myself, but I agree. It's appalling when misogyny comes from women, but the problems applies to the whole fandom, really. I think that it's telling how much the word "Mary Sue" is used for female canon characters opposed to "Gary Stu". I concede that mainstream writers are slacking in terms of believable, well written female characters, but even characters that work are still getting the short end of the stick most of the times.

104. LOL @ the "fan" XD ok, I'm easily amused.

127. It always gives me a bit of sadface when I hear of people who left LOST, because *now* (well, since towards the end of S3) it's truly awesome, and I think they're missing on something. I've seen this secret before, and I still don't understand it. Is it because there has yet to be a female protagonist? Because Pixar is releasing The Bear and the Bow in 2011.

Re: 101

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but in my case, it's (a) that (with the exception of The Incredibles, which still has a main male lead) their movies generally only have one significant female character in a sea of male characters, and (b) out of, what, nine? ten? films so far they have not had an unambiguous female lead yet. If they're about to finally fix (b), then good on them, but it's still taken a darn long while.
