And 103 - because some of the replies are bothering me

[identity profile] batty-gal.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry... but while I agree with 103 for the most part, I'm wondering just why the responses to it are mainly pointing at this as being a slash thing. Is there not the same problem in het? Because I read both and yeah, I'm seeing it. Female character A is a bitch, or female character B is a slut, etc. all because they get in the way of OTP 1 or 2. It's simply misleading to paint this as being mostly a slash thing when it's NOT.

Re: And 103 - because some of the replies are bothering me

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think it manifests itself a bit differently in slash fandom then in het fandom, but I think there is also a point in slash fandom to dismiss them across the board, whereas in het and femslash you just dismiss the ones that get in the way. Neither is really worse, its just different.

None of the true things you said about Marluxia there preclude him being gay.

[identity profile] nuclearpez.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I can agree, to an extent.

I am a girl that can't love a lot of the women around me, but to be fair I don't like a lot of the people around me. And I am just not on the same tempo as a large consensus of women, that doesn't mean all, but it is a lot. The odd thing is, I am equally furious when women are degraded by fandom. The women-bashing out there is phenomenal, and while I think there are few and far between female characters that reach the level of character development as male, I take it upon myself to find the treasures in life. I'm not going to lie. Some of my favorite fandoms came out of the pure fact that I could hold onto a tangible female. I mean this is why I don't get a lot with purist slashers because I feel that they miss the value of exploring all kinds of relationships, especially ones they can feasibly be in. But I don't blame this actually on the people who are situated in said environment and far more the problems of media reflection. In the fandoms where I do find these females, many are admired and loved.

I mean even if you look at the people who like Shadow Hearts, whether they like it or not. Alice seems like a clear archetype, but as she is developed I find VERY few fans who consider her to be either a mary-sue or unlikeable female. She manages to be fragile, feminine, etc but surprisingly strong.

[identity profile] clayangel.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hate him? Really? I think most people just don't know him. He was only in the first couple of seasons, after all, mostly before Ryan and Colin were around, so people don't care enough to watch his episodes.

Re: 108

[identity profile] time-for-candy.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think it does have a lot to do with people not knowing him...but a lot of the people who DO know him don't like him very much. At least from my experience. I don't dislike him (I think he can be annoying at times, but overall I think I'm neutral-verging-on-like. Although I love watching him on QI.), but I've met a lot of people who do. Including my dad. And virtually everyone who comments on YouTube, but I've been uploading videos for so long that I've learned to accept the fact that the average YT commenter has an IQ smaller than my shoe size.

FWIW, John's Annoying Or Not thread on WTATA (hardly a scientific source, but hey, you take what you can get) currently has 40 "annoying" votes, 39 "not annoying" votes, and 25 "I wish I knew as much about literature as John Sessions" votes. I think I voted for the last option...

This (troll-y?) secret is uselessly worded and homophobic, as mentioned by people commenting on it.

But why is no one commenting on this bit:

I actually want to smack some sense into her [my girlfriend]?

I hope that is further bad wording, and you really don't actually want to do that, OP... Idiot.

I don't think he is. In DW at least I think he captured the feeling of the public well. As far as I'm concerned RTD wasn't having a go at America he was having a go at how the British Government are OBSESSED about being just like America, you know, when they say Jump the british Gov says how high. And a lot of Brits get annoyed at that, no ones is against the American people it's just against our Government's puppy dog eyes towards the American one.

Re: 137

Don't agree, I've just seen too many "evil Americans" on that show. In addition I hate his refusal to let anyone American write for the show, or let any Americans guest star.

Even if her obsession is killing it... what are you doing feeding it with lies about how it's so good?

Honestly, just tell her how you feel, and how much it's bothering you, and let the cards land where they may. Sure, she might not be less obsessed, but maybe she'll take her fanart elsewhere atleast?

*deep breath* After reading the secret and three pages' worth of responses to this secret, I'm taking lots of deep breaths to stay calm. Why? Well...

Though I can get along with women, I prefer the company of guys. I always have. Yes, even as a toddler, I prefered to hang out with those of the male sex. I think this has less to do with culture and more to do with the fact that I was introduced to boys at a much earlier age than girls (infancy compared to six years old when I had my first female friend around my age). The way you have worded your secret makes me feel like I'm a bad person because of my preference. I really hope that is not the case. Likewise, to the people who say that girls will grow out of the habit of having only guy friends and publicly declaring it, how do you know it's merely a phase? For some females, it is a matter of preference or even something that has evolved after any sort of abuse from another female (especially emotional abuse, which I'm still in therapy for years later because it warped my personality in ways that make me unhappy with myself).

While I am all for women being on the same footing as men in society, it really chaps me when I see secrets like this. I understand everyone having their own feelings toward the subject, but I wish you would consider some of the other reasons some women at least say they don't like other women.

Re: 103

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
not the OP, but the secret isn't, imo, criticizing any woman who simply has more guy friends than female friends -- which is fine. It's pointing at girls who go "I can't be friends with other girls, they're so bitchy/catty/back-stabbing/etc, I much prefer guy friends!" Those comments do exist, and if someone feels the need to go on about how they don't have any female friends, and especially make negative generalizations a bout women, chances are it's a lot deeper than just having more guy friends.

166. I just saw The Shadow again (for the millionth time) the other day, and I would have loved to see more of Alec in that role. I'm still skeptical about the proposed reboot (http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/01/21/new-the-shadow-movie-might-feature-many-people-instead-of-solo-hero-says-producer/).

103. ...Eh. I'd elaborate on this, but I think it's a touchy subject, so I'll just say that for (most) of your secret I disagree.
112. I prefer Goosebumps, but whatever floats your boat.
116. As someone who spent waaaay too much time writing bad Joey/Chandler slash a while back, HECK YES! I AGREE SO MUCH!

More on 116. I also liked Monica so much more with Richard. I think that--Joey/Chandler, Monica/Richard, and Rachel/Ross-- would have been the more logical split. Also, have you seen the _joeychandler comm? It's pretty dead and all, but still.

103. Commenting again because I didn't read this at first b/c it looked too tl;dr - now I have read it, I have this to say:

FUCKEN WORD

[identity profile] marisahsaaaa.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
106. I don't really like Ginny all that much, but I don't hate her. Not like I used to, anyway. Thank you, Twilight, for making me appreciate JKR's characters. ♥

107. You know what they say: Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

116. Yeah, their chemistry is fantastic. ♥

124. If that's what had happened in Twilight, I would have liked it a whole lot more.

136. Noooo! Doctor/Tardis 4 lief! D:

147. It's pretty much the opposite for me. xD I used to care so much about people disagreeing with me, but because of all the Hetalia haters, I've learnt not to anymore~

149. SO FUCKING AGREED.

165. The great thing about Bleach is there are, like, a million characters, so the focus isn't on Ichigo all the time. And the anime has finally reached the Pendulum arc!

165 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-02-26 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true, the side characters are what keep Bleach going. I wrote that secret because I was frustrated that Ichigo got so uch screentime in the manga lately. I know, no surprise, he is the main character and all, but I got fed up with him reaaal fast. :D

[identity profile] nochi_san.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
154. He can't do that...and be gay? I mean, I get being annoyed at people who make him act "girly" but if you're just referring to people making him be in-character and still buttfucking guys...yeah, no.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-26 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
OP is referring to him not being in character as the problem
