103 - I MOSTLY agree with this secret. I think a lot of the stupid teenage slash fans who say "I only have male friends" probably ARE misogynistic, but I'm 20, not a slash fan, and definitely not a misogynist, but I also have mainly male friends. I don't usually get along with other females. It's nothing against women, I'm definitely not opposed to being friends with females and most of the girls in my local lolita (fashion) community are fricking awesome chicas who I love hanging out with both within and outside the context of the fashion, but with most women, I just... find myself not enjoying their company much. I'm pretty much pansexual (I hate putting a label on my sexuality but this is the most accurate one) but primarily wind up with men for this reason. Don't think that everyone who feels this way hates women! :(

That said, I agree with everything else you've said. It's depressing how much some slash fans seem to hate on female characters, and even real-life women, just for being female.

I feel like I had more to say, but I think I forgot. Ah well, I've rambled enough as it is!

163

[identity profile] lovely-amara.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Do not call yourself a "stupid american", I am sick and tired of being called that myself and it really doesn't help if Americans start to refer to themselves as being "stupid". It is a very stereotypical phrase, and it must be stopped.

Re: 163 and 137 I agree!

(Anonymous) 2009-02-27 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
ITA, if UK and other non US fans are going to toss that phrase around in their own fandoms, I want out.

It is one thing to correct fanfic, completely different to have a superiority complex over an ENTIRE NATION!

[identity profile] zamkenobi.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
103 - I've never understood it when people hate characters because of their gender, whether it be male or female, though it definitely seems like females get more hate. I'm really sick of it. It's not even in just the slash fandom, and even though I think it's senseless for women to hate on their own gender, I get even more pissed when guys hate on women for being women. I find it hard to believe all the ones that say that they're "joking" really are.

143 - I liked Jacob's point of view too, I don't see how people hated that part. Breaking Dawn was probably my second favorite if only because the series had reached the point where it was so bad that it was funny. I know that's not exactly what you mean, there were just some lines in it that made it impossible for me to ever take Twilight seriously again ("my brother, my son" anyone?).

[identity profile] batty-gal.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
06 - I'm on my eleventh re-read (yes, I counted them!), and I still can't stand that relationship. It just does nothing whatsoever for me. *shrug*

114 - Bullshit. Cap was right.

141 - Dick wasn't dead, though. They mentioned him in "Return of the Joker" as still being in Bludhaven. I still hated how Barbara ended up, though. And Bruce. However, I loved the show overall.

154 - You do realize that a character could be/do all of that and still be gay, right?

141

[identity profile] batty-gal.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Misread that one, sorry. As for Didio, I hate him so damn much.

154, the hair is and always has been pink

[identity profile] pervertparadox.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably should have mentioned when I last commented on this that the wording of the secret is sucky.
The stereotyping is stupid as all hell, but you probably should have said it a different way than 'fucking faggot'.
Your problem is you are probably dating a yaoi fangirl, she won't get it unless you're direct and even then you may encounter whining about how he must be gay because he has pink hair and uses flowers and how gay men can't be manly.

Re: 154, the hair is and always has been pink

[identity profile] gear-34.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
As a slash fangirl myself.....I need to point out that the argument isn't "he must be gay because he has pink hair and uses flowers and how gay men can't be manly." The argument will be "he must be gay because I really really want him to be because that's what personally gets me off." That's all it about...personal preferences and ships. Has nothing to do with manly or pink or whatever...it's just what she likes.

However, OP, if you read this -- it's obviously not what you like, and that's fine. But factors like this don't kill relationships -- refusal to address it and talk about it, and either come to an understanding or end amenably, are what kill relationships. Secondarily, the personal issues triggered by these hobbies don't always help. An ex of mine was bitterly jealous of my slash fandoms because he was insecure in his sexuality and felt that I found my OTPs more attractive, but faked interest out of jealousy even while trying to sabotage my fandom activities. It was not my hobby that killed the relationship there.

I also don't really care much about whether it makes sense or not. I just... really really really would love to see him bottom. (I have a thing for seeing tough guys bottoming. I don't know why. I just... do.)
And I also lost interest in Kuro/Fai a loooong time ago. Even my interest in Fai/Kuro has dwindled a little, but I would prefer it over the former.

Well, there's other evidence that Merlin is something other than straight if you watch for it in the rest of the episodes. There's the first and most obvious thing being his GIANT man!crush on Arthur; and, more significantly, his lack of interest - sexually - in Morgana and Gwen. Gwen goes so far as to SNOG him in the fourth episode and he BARELY reacts. He clearly LIKES her but he's utterly oblivious to how much she fancies him and only seems slightly bemused at moments when forced to confront the idea. With Morgana, while he shows more of an interest, you could argue that that interest is purely to do with the fact that he sees her as the only other person in the castle who might understand him one day, as a fellow magic user, even if SHE is unaware of their connection.

In my own personaly head!canon, I have Merlin down on the gay end of bi. He's mainly attracted to men, is completely in love with Arthur, adores Gwen in a completely platonic fashion, but is deeply attracted to Morgana, if only on a spiritual level.

103. For the most part, I agree. I think the problem with internalized misogyny is that it runs so deep, and is not quite as cut and dry as this secret may make it seem. Fandom misogynists are usually not huge walking caricatures easily spotted and condemned by all. That would be too easy. A lot of us, myself included, are guilty of it from time to time, which is probably why reading this can make people uncomfortable. You see something that looks like it might be accusing you, but you think, "Wait a minute, this can't be me! I don't hate women!" And you're right, you probably don't, but that doesn't mean your actions might not at times be tainted with this way of thinking. It's more important to acknowledge that so you can at least know how to start doing things differently, not fight over whether you are being condemned.

But I also agree with people who say that part of the problem lies in the comparative lack of truly awe-inspiring female characters in various media. Wouldn't it be interesting if fandom could somehow be involved in the movement to get more talented women into these industries? A more balanced female presence might be the answer to the whole most writers are male and don't know how to write women problem.

114. Maybe it's the writing, because I definitely get the feeling that the story was meant to be presented in a way that would allow readers to take either side and still come up with good, solid arguments. It's a fun exercise to switch back and forth and try arguing for both to see what you can eventually come up with, either by yourself or with friends. Not so much fun: watching the fan community tear itself apart over who was "right". For what it's worth, I do usually take your side; it's more interesting that way.

Less relevantly, what is it with F!S always coming up with secrets about topics/fandoms I have recently been preoccupied with. This has got to be like the fourth time it's happened. I don't remember a single Civil War secret in the last two years, why did one have to pop up this week? You're freaking me out! XD

154. There must be some kind of intelligence retardant in the water over at [livejournal.com profile] kh_secrets, because the fact that this secret is somewhat fucktarded completely flew over my head when I first saw it over there. Shame on me (and on you, OP, for being fucktarded).

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
103 - (mostly unrelated) Which is why Devin Grayson annoys me so much. She broke into the mostly male comic industry. And what does she do to my Nightwing? Arg.

114 - I blame the writing. I think the idea was to "deconstruct" the universe like DC did with Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns to study how Super Heroes would "really" impact the world. And honestly, I think this is how it would down in our world. I know I would NOT feel good about having teenages in masks randomly breaking into jails or having the Punisher/Hulk running around. (Also: I hate the retcon that the Hulk never killed anyone.)

But yeah, the writers had to make parallels with RL politics (even when they didn't make sense) and had to spoil the whole pot.

tl:dr - word, yo.

103. I am as tired of hearing about straw slashers (the ones who hate all women, fictional or real) as you probably are about hearing about straw feminists (the ones who hate all men, and are mean to girls who wear pretty clothes and makeup). I am sure one or two straw slashers exist; after all, I've met straw feminists in the flesh. But I was on the original Yaoi-Con concom. I've been to tons of slash cons. I've never met these people. I've occasionally heard these sentiments come out of the mouth of a teenager, but they grow out of it. Mostly I run into people like you at slash cons. And I wonder who the hell they are talking about. Not me. Nobody on my flist.

Most slashers don't hate all women or even all female characters. They might hate one or two female characters (often for good reason) but the smart ones generally confine their anger to creators who are not imaginative enough to write a really strong female character (hint: if the character was created by the thought process: "1. what traits would make her a perfect girlfriend for X? 2. what personality traits will attract the male 18-35 demographic, 3. write casting call specifying that actress must be hot", then either she is NOT a strong female character or if she is, it's by accident) or who feel obliged to shove all attractive female characters into sexual relationships with men, even if it would be inappropriate in the setting if it existed in the real world (because it's such a great idea to fuck your co-workers). Furthermore, a large amount of slash (certainly not all of it, I am not saying all of it) is pure sexual/romantic fantasy, and many women are not terribly interested in fantasising about other women even if they do feel sisterhood. This makes them exactly as self-hating as men who get off on lesbian porn because they don't want to look at other men's dicks.

ps: for pure irony value, outside SPN, I mostly write het. it's just that I do love slash and in the 1990s yaoi was the only shoujo most people read in the USA.

118. Me too. But I always knew my mother was batshit. Betty actually makes me feel sorry for her. Which helps.
