Thanks a lot, OP. :P

Thanks to this secret, I just realised that somebody that I know IRL looks a lot like Morticia Addams (minus the makeup), and now I can't unsee it.

I think a lot of people see indifference and immediately call it hate and misogyny, which just isn't the case. I don't hate women or female characters, I just find about 85 percent of them don't hold my interest. Maybe it's the writing, maybe it's the acting, but the one thing it's definitely NOT is an OTP. Because I will agree that "OMG, I hate that character because they're in the way of my OTP!" is stupid. Unless that character has been hurtful for the purpose of breaking up an established relationship. But that's because it's a mean character, not because of the shipwreck.

103. I'm sorry. I promise that I'm not trying to be special or cool. I'm just being true to myself. Most girls and women, in real life and in fiction, just piss me off. I do not find them interesting or worthy of respect in any way. I feel this way about many men as well, but it seems to occur more often with members of my own gender. There are a few exceptions, and I hang onto those amazing women for dear life. But I'm absolutely not going to force myself to like or appreciate something or someone I don't just for the sake of a cause or a belief. That's not freedom, let alone feminism.

I am not an obsessive shipper.
I want to make that very clear before I go on any further.
I do not view two characters who have dynamics as a couple, and I often berate those who oft do. I avidly promote the, "They're just friends, now quit fagging over it already" angle whenever I can.
I am NOT an obsessive shipper.

But god damn the moment I saw that comic strip, the first three words out of my mouth were, "I ship it". And for some reason, as much as I hate myself for it, I don't care at all.
It probably makes me a furry, too.
But... but it bothers me that I don't know who would top...

Does... does that make me a bad person?

Re: 132

[identity profile] lady-laguna.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I never thought of them this way before this secret ;3; Damn you, OP.

Personally, I don't go for the "absolute top/bottom" stuff. A lot of gay couples are switches. However this thought alone is depressing because I could never bring myself to draw/write porn of those two. I'd be scared she'd find it, since she frequents DA...

So agree. I don't get what everyone sees in him. He's not a bad singer but it's a very 'stagey' voice, no real quality to it.

Also, OP, the font on your secret is so cool! XD

139 - OMG WORD. Although I have no problems with having slash goggles. Jack/Davey is so incredibly obvious to me.

143 - Lol, I thought Breaking Dawn was the biggest trainwreck pile of shit I ever read. I definitely don't understand. D:

154 - I can see Marluxia either way, but I think the fandom pansies him up way too much. Yes, he uses flowers, so what? He's more badass than people give him credit for. (Actually, I think the KH fandom in general pansies up characters, but that's neither here nor there.)

166 - Man, I forgot how hot he used to be.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
103- I don't generally think I'm the kind of person you're talking to but...why should I *like* woman just cause they're woman? If it's about equality, it means I should like or dislike them on their merit as human being, not what's between their legs, and that goes BOTH ways. I should be forced or coerced into liking a flat, stereotypical female character who's say...badly written by some male who can't write females worth a damn JUST because she's female. Equality means I'll judge them the same as a judge the guys.

And I know you're talking to people who really DO hate the woman cause they get in the way of the woman, but I'm tired of being told I hate woman because I don't worship every female character ever.

154- Someone has issues.

162- I think so too (And I'd rp it with you if you'd play Kuro...but I'm super far behind)

Re: 103

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Um I think the point is the dislike of them is based on the fact that they are female. This isn't really about dislike of individual characters but in general, but rather the scorn that is being heaped on female characters for the sole reason of being female.

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
103. I'm not into slash myself, so I'm just going to try and imagine being one for a second, but when it comes to slash shipping, since it's a fantasy for the individual shipper I think they don't want other females to get in the way of their ship because it's 'hot' when there's two guys involved in the relationship, like when men fantisize about lesbians. In one respect you could look at that and say, oh now they have things like yaoi in the market which cater to fulfilling a female audiences fantasy. But it sounds like you're talking about shipping in a fandom sense where it isn't necessarily canon for the two characters to be together but the slashers ship it anyway. Personally, I don't really understand the rampant hate on
the female characters either, especially to the ones who try to assert themselves. But I'm guessing they're just trying to keep their fantasy 'pure'.

For the real world arguement:
But I think you have highlighted something significant in that there is still some competitiveness amoung women between other women that stems from transitioning ideas on the role of their gender. I think that it's still being fleshed out and women struggle with each other as well as with men in defining that role.

That being said, I personally tend to feel more at ease around guys that like nerdy stuff like video games and comics, etc. I don't know women in rl that love those things so I end up making friends with guys instead. Believe me, if I found rl women out there that loved those things and we got along well enough to be friends I would be so glad to do so. I have friends that are girls but I'm just not that close to them. Believe me, I don't think of myself as being 'cool' or 'special' because of it.

131. lol omg how many were there, tell me.

136. Hey man if Wall-e and Eve can fall in love, what's wrong with that?

165. 'Damn I hate him so much I really hope he dies.' Sorry but I lol'd. I don't hate or like him either way but yeah he's kinda just blah...

168. Wow, I never thought of it that way before....I'm going to remember this 'cause I die like hundreds of times when I play Zelda games. XD I won't feel like a traitor to his character but I might think, 'wow, if he were on his own he'd solve this puzzle much faster'. XDDD

[identity profile] azora-mysta.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
103. You are so lucky to have nerdy male friends that respect you.

Almost every time I meet a male geek that shares my interests they talk down to me and shunt me aside, because stupid girls are unworthy to like the same things they do.

If I could find anyone of either gender that shared my interest and was willing to accept me, I'd be all over that.

154. So... having a deep manly voice and being a calculating, manipulative backstabber means someone can't be gay?

I kind of get what you're saying (he's not stereotypically camp, no, and writing him that way would be OOC), but that was... not the best way to say it.

119. I love that movie. I remember when I first saw it, I was like, ten years old or something and my older cousin was watching it. I sat down next to her and watched it with her and was both weirded out by and in love with it. Then I saw it again a few years later and it was even better, haha.

138. You are not alone, believe me. People with slash goggles flock to that movie from what I've seen. ;) And I think there's something wrong if you don't find Spot sexy.

154

[identity profile] allira-dream.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Soooo a gay man can't be ruthless and hard working?

See, it would have been so much easier for you to say 'I hate how most fans write him as a stereotypically cliched raging queen instead of the ruthless, cruel Nobody he is.' instead of coming on as a homophobic asshole.

103. FUCKING SIGNED. This is a really beautifully worded secret, and it pretty much encapsulates why fandom at large makes my faith in humanity decrease at a steady and troubling rate. I'm fucking tired of fangirls bashing female characters that have the EXACT SAME FUCKING CHARACTER TRAITS as male ones! Or bashing a well-written, strong, realistic female character and fawning all over a flat, boring male one! (Here, of course, I am talking about most mainstream/popular current shounen anime/manga fandoms, though it applies to a lot of other fandoms.)

Anyway, tl;dr PREACH IT, SISTER.

147. cool story bro

158. I adore Keira Knightley and I don't understand the constant hating on her at ALL. So what if she's skinny? It's just as wrong to hate someone for being skinny as it is to hate them for being fat.

165. Those badly-written male characters I was talking about in my first response? YEAH, ICHIGO IS ONE OF THEM. God, I can't STAND him. One-dimensional and infinitely less interesting than, oh, everyone else in the cast. ><;;

I'm actually surprised at the number of people who were made curious enough about this amazing OC cast to ask for a link.

Then I remembered that this fandom is easily swayed by pretty artz, regardless of veracity of the claim. Especially the comments readily admitting that the vast majority of Avatar OCs suck, but they'd believe the OP this one time just because the art is soo interesting.

Seriously. Good artist =/= good writing, story, *or* OCs. And to think, two-thirds of the commenters wouldn't have given the secret a shot if it'd been plastered on Sokka's face. How many good OCs have you passed up because it didn't have sparkly fanart?

-BitterAnon, still looking for a good Avatar OC

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-02-26 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, fuck off. No one is suggesting for a second that men can't be friends without wanting to shag each other. Did the OP suggest that all the guys should have been paired up? I don't see any mention of Chandler/Ross or Joey/Ross or Chandler/Joey/Ross.

I don't know! But the person in question unfriended me for a very specific comment (that was not about her, towards her, or even on her journal at all) and didn't bother to tell me this was the reason why she did it. Cause I'm supposed to have ESP and just "know" that this comment I didn't even realize she had read (or read into so far) had bothered her. Apparently this is how friendship ACTUALLY works, lol!
