103 - I understand your frustration. It's hard, but a lot of girls really have internalized misogyny to a scary degree.

119 - Wow. I had totally forgotten that movie. ♥

154 - ...None of the things you list in any way reflect on someone's sexuality. Having pink hair or not does not indicate if someone is gay. Homosexuals can be hard workers. They can be deep voiced. What the hell, homophobic, much? If you don't want to see your girlfriend's art, say something about it, but your stereotypes are old and boring.

154.I think it's a comment about the girlfriend's stereotype.

103 I hesitate to call myself a feminist (though I would never deny it), because it feels like an empty title. I've never done a single thing in advocacy of feminism, and it's an issue I just don't think about because it doesn't affect my life. You fight for what hits closest to home, and in my case that's homophobia and racism. I hardly ever think about women's rights, and sometimes I really don't really perceive it as a big issue.

This secret changed that a little, sparked a little more passion in me and made me feel guilty about my laissez-faire attitude. Thanks, OP. :)

153 Ooooh, what's this?

I really, really don't think you should be blaming women for this one. There are very few female characters who aren't somehow shitty, there are few canons which pass the Bechdel Test - ie, allow female characters to have the same sorts of interesting human connections & emotional depths as male characters, and it's those connections that's what shipping is made of. Because female characters aren't allowed to have those things, they DO often read like personality-lite entities who exist only for the satisfaction/fulfilment of male characters. Slash is a rightful rebellion against that. I've never felt that slash is as misogynistic, per se, as any of the canons I've slashed; usually much less so, as it allows women to exercise their desires. That women identify with characters who don't have a marked gender isn't such a bad thing. But god, the world needs better female characters. In everything I've ever fanfapped over, I've seen - off the top of my head - three female characters who were compelling enough that I'd actually like to be them, compared to at least a dozen such men. *huggles icon*

I'm going to disagree with you here, or at least amend it to highly popularized fandoms. I've had no problem finding canons with female characters that interest me greatly, but many of those tend to fall below the mainstream (or the series themselves are dominated by females). But I have some pretty strange tastes in fandoms anyway, so I can understand your point. I probably actively avoid the kinds of series you're talking about.

Okay, I have seen this same basic sentiment said about Sirius/Remus, House/Wilson, and now Chandler/Joey. That "braver choices" line is BULLSHIT. The creators and writers of these characters are not doing any disservice to their readers and viewers by not making your OTP canon.

Not everyone even sees these pairings as having romantic potential. I never saw any subtext for Sirius/Remus and the other two play the bromance for laughs. Nobody owes you the great epic gay love story that you think will revolutionize entertainment.

Holy muffins, is it feminist rage day today or something?

101. It saddens me that females get so little attention in Pixar's films, though I love the ones that do turn up. Dory, Jesse, Boo, Elastigirl, Violet, Eve, and Colette are all awesome. And I think I'm definitely going to think of Wall-E as a female next time I see the movie. It'll be cute and lulzy.

103. Ugh. I definitely hear you there for the most part. It sickens me that so many girls hate on 'evil bitches' like Kairi, Sakura, Orihime, and the like. And they totally warp their personalities in fanfic to justify their prejudice. And that doesn't even cover the hating on various girls that happens in het love triangles, like the blood wars between fans of Aerith and Tifa or Hermione and Ginny.

But I also think part of fandom's intense focus on the males stems from the females being less interesting than the males, due to the latent sexism of the creators that shows up in the work. Most of the series with huge slash followings have a tiny female cast, and the creators have a tendency to try to balance this out by making the girls Mary Sues. I don't think that's the case with the girls I've named, but it can seem that way.

When so few of the series we watch pass the Bechdel/Wallace test (http://parabasis.typepad.com/blog/2008/07/the-bechdel-test.html), there's not a lot to choose from.

129. Hey, I was addicted to Gaia for a long time. And I can definitely see how Neopets would be fun---like what you like and roll with it, I say.

I think it has less to do with sexism and more of they have no idea how to write female characters which can be chalked up due to laziness. Mind you, most of these writers are men as well as the editors. It's easier for them to go with stereotypes than do the research needed to write interesting female characters.

For example, the women in Kill Bill were amazing as well as the dialog in Death Proof. It felt real and not just a rehash of the same female dialog that we get in every other movie. But then Tarantino has gone on record saying that vast majority of people he hangs out with are women. He knows how they talk and what they do. Which is basically, alot like men. He gets that while we like pretty clothes and looking feminine but we also like fast cars and driving said fast cars while pretending to be the female version of Steve McQueen.

But, again, writing such thing takes research. And, frankly, if you watch television or read books and comics these days, research is often ignored. (I am looking at you Heroes with your concept of time travel that doesn't adhere to anything real.)

103 It's very hard for me to befriend other women because so many of them are socialized to become, in my opinion, very limited as human beings (for example, to act "nice" all the time). I know it's not their fault that society expects women and men to behave certain ways, but it's irritating to be around such women (and I live in the South, where due to socially stratification gender roles appear to be even more rigidly enforced). I think that's why a lot of my close friends have been male... it's not like I hate women, it's just that I feel less like a woman than a human being, and men, due to male priviledge, don't have to deal with the same social limitations that women do.

I agree with you on the problem of misogyny in fandom and especially slash/yaoi fandoms. That is a major problem and I've never understood those sentiments within that whole community.

122 I disagree on the "shortened to little detriment" part. Movies are more than just characters and plots. Sometimes the cinematography is just as, if not more important than the other aspects of the film.

148 So... Youtube doesn't work for you?

157 I had the same reaction to their relationship until very recently. I'm not sure why I'm okay with it now. I must have a huge incest squick that borders on the insane because I think it's gross to have a relationship with one of your in-laws, even if your spouse is already dead (and in this case, they weren't even married yet). Also Lee gets on my fucking nerves.

This is one of the reasons I'm not keen on the relationship (in a romantic sense).

I think it's less that he hates the shallow stereotype and more that he feels a deep connection with the character and if the character is portrayed as gay...what does that say about him?

Which is totally idiotic but then homophobes aren't really known for their rationale.

Saying this as a big fan of the guy myself, so don't bite.

To be totally fair, he doesn't have the most phenomenal voice on the planet. He has an amazing voice for musical theatre, but in lots of cases it's lost on listeners because they can't see the stage acting that accompanies it. It's a very traditional "Broadway" voice, not the sort of emotive singing we see in more contemporary musicals. He also sings a lot of material that just isn't very good, and doesn't do his voice justice...he needs to cover less Andrew Lloyd Webber and more Cole Porter. His rendition of "In the Still of the Night" is one of the most incredible things I've ever listened to.

He can act. He can. But you can tell that his real talent is acting for the stage rather than on camera, as some of his screen acting can be a little "overstated" sometimes.

I think all of this is overridden by the fact that he has an undeniable, unquantifiable charisma...he's very easy to like, for those who like him. Of which I am one. ^_^

103. THIS.

117. There's something about Captain America that, to this day, manages to pluck on people's heart strings. Now that is a testament to a classic character.

131. I'm impressed your computer didn't implode out of protest midway through.

154- Um...not all homosexuals have limp wrists, high voices, and prance around. You're obviously ignorant if you don't think they can have deep voices, be hard workers. Also, if you were any kind of a man you would tell your girlfriend that you don't seeing her drawings, because when you lie to her it makes you a coward. Tell her the truth like a man would instead of posting a secret about it for the whole internet to read.

155- That's not pathetic. I wish I could find the Jensen to my Jared. I probably won't, but that doesn't mean I won't stop trying.

161- I wouldn't want to see that!

Where can I read this? The character designs look really interesting, and I'm willing to take your word that they are good OCs (since most of them aren't).

Not OP, but yeah a group's working on it, so I think that helps round out the characters.
