People say MTV went downhill when it started leaning heavily into reality shows. And while that's fair - a MUSIC television network should generally feature MUSIC - some of those reality shows are the reason I had any awareness of LGBTQ folks growing up. (Yes, I was very sheltered and isolated as a kid.)

I wish musicians still made cool music videos and at least put them on Youtube, but I think that era has largely passed.

You know, I have to agree. MTV understood their audience skewed young, and lucky for us Gen Xers were pushing for social progress and more real and relatable media that those who had the power let them try so many different aspects of youth culture. Like, The Real World more or less paved the way to reality tv, and honestly, watching people argue over petty shit is boring...but it opened opportunities for those of us watching to talk about things like race relations/struggles, queer culture, the dynamics of men and women (or men's/women's relationships with the same sex), family struggles and being a shitty 20-something with shitty circumstances.

I also took note of how much I learned from....teen girls' and women's magazines! Growing up, I heard a lot of "dumb girls read magazines and get brainwashed to obsess over advertisements and shallow things like fashion and makeup" arguments as to why reading magazines is vapid...which has grains of truth there...but a lot of these magazines were doing some great work too. Readers submitting their own real and fictional stories, journalists/writers given money and resources for well written articles (I learned about the caste system in India and how the Untouchables were ostracized when I was like 15, living in a small hick town in the middle of whitebred American suburbia, because a women's magazines had a long article where the journalist spent time with people in the Untouchables caste, following them as they tried to find work).

Here's to media that had pockets of good influence!🥂🍻🧋

I think the issue is that they had too much that had nothing to do with music. I think if they’d limited it to one cartoon and The Real World, they’d have been fine and music videos would still be a routine part of releasing new music. Instead they continued to call themselves MTV and instead featured a shitload of programming aimed at teens and young adults. If they’d just made a separate channel for that, it would have been better. And it isn’t like they didn’t know that; they’d been on air for all of ten years when it became common for people to bitch about how rarely they played music videos and comedians had whole routines about it. They never adjusted to align with what viewers wanted and it’s frankly amazing that MTV endured as long as it did.

idk, every time i run across a piece of media that celebrates how amazing the power of storytelling is, it always feels self-congratulating and almost masturbatory to me.

examples include The Thousand and One Nights, Neverending Story, The Sandman, Kingkiller Chronicles, etc, etc, etc.

Sometimes people who read a lot of fiction say people who don’t read much fiction are lacking some essential element of humanity. To me, that’s almost as offensive as when people say you’re lacking essential humanity if you didn’t take the right college classses.

I’ve definitely gotten that feeling from books and movies before, but now I can’t remember many particular examples. I certainly rolled my eyes at some point towards the end of Game of Thrones.

I don’t think I felt it for The Neverending Story or Haroun and the Sea of Stories, but maybe that’s because I read them as a child and still think of them through that nostalgia.

Wasn't the point of Neverending Story less about 'the power of storytelling' and more about 'MC realizes he has the power to create his own story instead of just passively reading'?

These are different things to me idk

if you're going all the way back thousands of years to 1001 Nights, the other examples cited are just modern takes on a very old and established trope.

to which I say, yeah, at some point all tropes turn into "omg we get it, stop retreading the same ground again" but idk if this one in particular has been trodden so hard as to be that annoying. you do you, anon, but this trope ain't even on my radar.

I think the one story of this kind I don't have negative feelings for is I am Frankelda, since it speaks directly to artists and the actual feelings, the challenges, and methods of storytelling, and it's both stop motion animation and a Mexican film.

The others I have seen, indeed, often seem masturbatory. Bran the Broken...

Thousand and One Nights, in addition to being ancient and potentially one of the originals, is justified IMO because it actually has a real collection of stories to back up its message.

Modern examples I agree with you on mostly. Unless the writer is willing to do the work of writing their own stories within the story, or compiling an original collection of stories others wrote for them.

I'm sick of it in modern fiction. But to me the difference between something like 1001 Nights and the ending of GoT is that the former earns it, and the stakes are much smaller for it as well. I can buy story having the power to transform lives, and I can actually buy it having the power to transform cultures if one acknowledges that it has just as much chance of going wrong. But what GoT does feels a lot more self-congratulatory, like any story at all is the only thing that matters to anyone.

I love Survivor, and I would love to discuss the season as it airs, but sadly I have to avoid fan spaces when a season is airing, because spoilers about the boot order almost always manage to leak out. Even though typically moderators are good at removing blatant spoilers, once the season is spoiled, you can kind of tell what is going to happen because SO MANY people will mysteriously have a "good feeling" about the future winner, or they'll predict that some random player is going to make the finals when only two episodes have aired. Even if you don't read a spoiler that says "XYZ wins" or "ABC is in the final 3," you kind of absorb these spoilers by osmosis because so many people are predicting the same thing.

Don't watch espionage movies if you are having a Paranoid Episode. In fact, stay away from television entirely in that position. Trust me on this.

I get that the internet was - and still is - a refuge for misfits and nerds. But I think maybe due to that, parts of fandom culture enables and even encourages bullying victims to gather together and dwell on things that happened years and years ago and never get over it in a very unhealthy way.
