I'm assuming then that you prefer not to talk during sex IRL? Because for me, that would be awkward and strange. People say gooey shit to their significant other all the time -- it's part of the absurdity of love. Also, I always feel that communication is important during the actual act so that no, uh, unfortunate incidents occur.

Edit: Teal deer: I think it's weird when people are portrayed not talking during sex.

I don't talk because whenever I do, I get a bit awkward saying gooey emotional things so I end up making some silly joke, and then we (actually, mostly I) start giggling uncontrollably and it's hard to concentrate on the sexy part of it. But yeah, I also feel weird reading about romance and cheesy feelings, so I also prefer porn with no dialogue... I get ya, OP.

Have you ever had sex? I mean all we do is talk about other stuff, how he needs to move his knee or how that angle isn't doing it for either of us - or how I need to remember to feed the dog when we're finished. Meh. Some people don't stop talking, other people are so quiet they don't even make noise... People have pretty weird habits in situations other than when they're having sex, right, so why would you expect during sex to be any different? I've gotten busy with a girl that couldn't stop laughing the entire time, not because of anything I was doing- that was just how she rolls.

I think you've just never read good sex talk in a fic, then.

I love dirty talk IRL, but I admit that it can come off as ridiculous in a fic when not written well and with consideration for the characters. Generally though I think having good dialogue during sex is a major part of keeping the characters IC. Most people do talk during sex.

Stepping away from the discussion of dirty talk in live action sex scenes or real life, when it comes to fanfic you need to think of dirty talk as a kind of tool. Fic doesn't have the visual element that video or comics/manga has, so it has to use other means to make readers hot under the collar. Narrative description is one tool, the characters verbally expressing their enjoyment is another. And when it comes to characters verbally expressing their enjoyment, dirty talk is often a preferable alternative to over-use of onomatopoeic sound effects (e.g. "Oooooh, nnnnnnnh"). You can write a sex scene without using that tool, but it really shouldn't come as a surprise when people choose to utilise it in their writing.

On a slightly different note, if you mean "goopy" as overly soppy and romantic, that doesn't really count as dirty talk. Dirty talk =/= all talk during sex. As for the "crass" dirty talk, is your issue characters using more colloquial or 'vulgar' language (e.g. cock or fuck)? If so, do you only like sex scenes that use lots of euphemisms and purple prose, that shy away from calling a dick a dick? Honestly curious here.

I think what is even more bizarre to me is when they have full-on, coherent conversations with each other during sex. The sex really cannot be very exciting or great if that occurs IMO.

Agreeing with the anon that dirty talk is a pretty useful narrative tool, if nothing else (although one would hope not just for that). With me it really depends on how OOC it feels, although this could apply to anything, not just dirty talk. OOC dialogue in general is just going to take me out of the fic, doesn't matter the context.

I'm totally with you on talking in porn though, I totally have to watch that shit with the sound off. I wouldn't mind if any of it ever sounded at all authentic ever, but when it's some guy going "ooh baby you fuckin' like that yeah fuckin' take it" for twenty minutes, it's just... kind of dull and hilarious both at once...

Heh. It's funny, because I was just thinking about this the other day. The first fanfic I wrote, my beta at the time insisted that I needed more dialogue and dirty talk during the sex. I was really kind of uncomfortable with it and thought it seemed forced and fake. Because that's just not my thing. When I'm having amazingly hot sex, there's very little talky talk going on. My favorite sex scenes in fiction involve very minimal dialogue, but rich narration and description of senses.

BUT - and others have said this, YMMV. Some people *need* that dirty-talk. Others, not so much.

"Don't like, don't read," however, is just a stupid reaction, I'm sorry. How the hell do you know whether or not to read it? Are we going to start demanding warnings for explicit dialogue in smut now, too?

Meh, just as it is in real life, some fictional characters would be very vocal in the sack and some would be very quiet. It all depends.

Take Supernatural for example. It would just makes sense with Dean's personality that he would be vocal; he might not say anything intelligible, but he sure as hell would be making noises of approval. Castiel, on the other hand, would be dead silent. If I was reading a fic and he was being a dirty talkin' Chatty Cathy Supreme, I'd hit the back button... it would just be too ooc.

Allow me to be one of the few to agree with you, anon. Dirty talk is one thing that just completely throws me out of a fic. I don't mind a bit of talking, but I'm a big fan of "show, don't tell", and generally prefer to see the emotions involved in sex expressed through narrative instead of dialogue. That's my preference. Now watch me get shat on over it because it's "unrealistic". :/

I don't get why fiction preferences and real-life sexual experiences can't be separate. And for that matter, I don't get why anyone's personal preferences should be up for debate in the first place unless they're completely immoral, and this is far from it.

After having read through the comments, I just wanted to add that wow - the judgmental bullshit up in here. Everyone has sex differently. YMMV and YKINMK applied to everyone. Just because OP doesn't like what you like, neither makes them frigid, nor a virgin, nor even a judgmental asshole like some of the commenters here seem to be.

I can't STAND the crass kind of dirty talk anywhere, real life or fiction. It makes me feel cheap and makes the whole thing feel over-acted and fake. If I ask you if what I'm doing feels good, that's not an invitation to blurt out every dirty line from any porno ever, it's me asking "am I doing this right?" But every partner I've had insists on it, so I guess it's the norm and I'm just uptight.

Personally, I've realized I like talking in my sex fic -- not usually dirty talk as much, unless it really fits, but just the occasional comment, or characters trying to talk while doing it and getting distracted. That scattered quality, them trying to talk to each other but getting incredibly... distracted, is really hot to me, I'm not sure why.

But jfc, I don't see any problems with this whether you like to talk during sex IRL or not, whether you're a virgin or not. Some things just turn people off while reading smut. Some things, even if you know they happen IRL/like them happening IRL, can just seem kinda awkward when reading them. You have your own preferences, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them as long as you're not being a dick about other people liking what you don't, which you don't seem to have a problem with.

I can see from this thread why this is a secret, though. :/

Idk, I don't ever really talk a lot during sex except for the general 'do you like this?' and 'yes, please' sort of things. Just like ... basic sex talk -- which sounds stupid, I guess, but I'm not having a discussion with a girl when I'm eating her out.

And when I'm reading fic, I'm always more interested in the descriptions of the acts than conversations. And I get the whole "crass" thing too; I don't mind dirty talk (hey, I do it IRL), but it just doesn't seem to fit all that well with some characters, IMHO, and I'd just rather not see it, because it takes me out of the story.

It's a preference and that's totally fair, but not everybody agrees. Fic without talking during sex does exist (and....SOME live porn, not much, but I've definitely seen some), so idkkkk I get that it's frustrating but aw, I like it, so your general GET THE TALKING OUT OF MY PORN statement isn't something I can..entirely support.

My rule of thumb when it comes to dirty talk in fics is if I can accept that the character is the type to talk dirty in a certain way. (Because I'm pretty sure there are many different ways to talk dirty.) I just have to ask myself if the way they're talking dirty actually fits them, you know?
