(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)Personally I still think "demisexuality" is bullshit (I don't care what anyone says, sorry) but still... how does this make sense?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)Ditto. Not wanting to have sex with someone until you have an emotional connection with them is a preference, not a fucking sexual orientation. If you ask me, most so-called "demisexuals" are either ignorant or appropriating asexuality because they think it makes them "special."

(Anonymous) 2012-03-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)You know, I've never typed out his name before, but now that I have, Keanu is a really weird name. Like, it just looks totally wrong, like a word I've been typing out 60 million times, and then suddenly doubt whether it is even a word at all, but I only have to type it out once to get the effect.
...Keanu.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-24 01:01 am (UTC)(link)Some people tend to only feel sexual attraction for people that they know well. This is not an orientation. It is a preference.
An orientation involves which gender you are attracted to. Thus, gay orientation, bi orientation, OR asexual orientation, which is when you don't feel attraction to any gender.
Demisexuality? Is a label people apply to themselves in order to feel special and unique, to distinguish themselves from other people who may feel sexual attraction to people they don't know. It is not a valid orientation.

Straight people can occasionally have a same-sex crush, and gay people can have different-sex crushes. If you're not attracted to any gender in general, you're still asexual, even if you find exceptions to your sexuality rule.
Your label is your own business, but don't feel like you have to change it because of one exception.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-24 03:14 am (UTC)(link)But demisexuality hinges on the fact that you have to have an emotional connection to a person to feel attraction. And unless this is a OMGIKT secret, you don't have one. He's a face on a screen.
Maybe you just have a very low sex drive?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-24 06:56 am (UTC)(link)Is "orientation", as most people are using it in this thread, just about the gender you're attracted to (in whatever way that might be), or is it only describing sexual attraction?
I've always thought of the "sexual" part of hetero-/homo-/bi-/pan-/a-/whatever- sexual referred to the sex of the person you're attracted to, in whatever way you're attracted to them, rather than sex as an activity, but in the last post where I got into a discussion with someone about this, they said it's based solely on sexual attraction, which sort of confused me.
To me it makes more sense that gay=attracted to/interested in/whatever the same sex, hetero=the opposite sex, bi=both, a=neither, etc., but I seem to see it used most often as "usually attracted to one or both sexes, but doesn't like/isn't interested in sex as an actual activity". And to me, it seems kind of ironic that people who aren't interested in sex base their entire orientation around it. I mean, I can think of three women I know that are not particularly interested in sex, say they've never been particularly interested in it, but they all have significant others and consider themselves straight/lesbians. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if none of them have never even heard of asexuality. It just seems like labeling your orientation based entirely on sex is placing way more importance on sex than on any romantic/emotional/other type of connection, which just seems kind of...inconsistent?, especially for people who aren't interested in it.
It reminds me of how people will make comments about how being gay (or bi/pan/etc.) is all about sex, to which the answer is almost always (at least that I've seen/heard) "it's not about sex, it's about who you fall in love with". So to say it's about who you fall in love with and not sex, unless you're not interested in sex, in which case it's entirely about sex, makes very little sense to me.
And looking at this way, it seems like "asexual" (although, again, that seems to me to imply "not attracted to anyone" more than "not interested in sex", so maybe "non-sexual" is a more descriptive term?) is more like "demisexual", a qualifier to gay/straight/bi/whatever than an entire separate orientation in itself.
And comments like this:
Sexual orientations are based on gender: homosexual - attracted to the same gender as yourself, bisexual - attracted to both genders, heterosexual - attracted to the opposite gender as yourself and asexual - attracted to neither gender.
and this:
Not all of sexuality is tied up in orientation. Orientation is really important, but there are other aspects too and we don't have a good vocabulary for them.
have me confused because they seem kind of ambiguous and I'm not entirely sure what "attracted to" is referring to here, and what, specifically, the difference between "sexuality" and "orientation" is (I have a vague idea, but I seem to see them used interchangeably the majority of the time so I'm not positive).
I don't know, this is probably making no sense, but it's something I always wonder about when I see people discussing asexuality, especially because there don't seem to be any universal definitions that everybody agrees on.

This REALLY rubbed me the wrong way because it's assuming that everyone experiences romantic attraction, even people who don't experienc sexual attraction. Aromantic asexuals exist. I know this because I am one, and I don't appreciate being told that I don't have an orientation at all (I also don't appreciate being compared to demisexuals, because I agree with all the people in this thread who've been saying that demisexuality isn't a sexual orientation). Anyway, sorry I couldn't give you a explanation about this stuff. Hopefully someone will be able to!
