Beer!
(Anonymous) 2014-03-26 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)My grocery store has this thing where you can get a 6pack and choose the different bottles you want (mostly from a local variety, but still quite a large selection). I've been using this to get a variety and try and figure out once and for all what type of beer I enjoy. I do not enjoy most alcohol, but I have had beer I've enjoyed before. It's just a matter of figuring out what kind that was...
So come, talk about beer! Or any other kind of alcohol you like, I suppose.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-26 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)But I'm kind of in the same boat. Wish I had a place that would let me mix and match. Right now I've got a 4 left in a six-pack of Alleycat that I bought because a recipe called for beer and I didn't really know what to get. It was great for the recipe but crap for drinking.
Re: Beer!
Now, on the other hand the process of "dry hopping" is an entirely different creature. When a beer is labelled "dry hopped", it means the hops are added when the beer is kegged, so that they don't cook along with the malt and other ingredients. What that means as a consumer is that those beers have all the floral notes and other flavours of hops without nowhere near the amount of bitterness.
But hey, don't let me tell you what beer you like. If you like bitter, drink bitter.

mexican beer is very nice too, especially when it's warm since it's very refreshing. basque beer is also very good.
generally you can't go wrong with local beer (except if it comes from a random person's basement or something). the best beer i've ever drunk was a sailor's brew on a tiny island near the west coast of france

Re: Beer!
(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 01:00 am (UTC)(link)That said, I do like some lambics, which is a pretty sweet fruit beer (or beer type thing), and a Corona with lime really is the best accompaniment to a big plate of Tex-Mex food, especially when served on a restaurant's patio on a warm night (which in Texas could be in any season).

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 01:03 am (UTC)(link)I've found over the years that I really enjoy IPAs, abbey ales, and nice, thick, chewy stouts and porters. Lagers I generally do not like at all; they taste like lightly flavored water half the time.
My absolute favorite beer no longer exists: Riverhorse's Oatmeal Milk Stout. I have never tasted anything so delicious, and now I fear that I never will again. :(

Re: Beer!
(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 01:58 am (UTC)(link)The only thing I really strongly dislike are the IPAs that get super, super hoppy or bitter. Other than that it's mostly fair game. Big fan of brown ales, big fan of lagers, big fan of darker beers like stouts and porters, and generally just things with good mellow flavors. A lot of my favorite beers that I really like are from around where I live (Northern California) - Anchor Steam is kind of a local standard. Racer 5 is a really solid IPA that's on tap a lot of places around here. My favorite beer is Death and Taxes which is not available very widely at all - made by a small but really awesome brewery called Moonlight Brewing Company and it is just fantastic. For nonlocal stuff, Deschutes makes a lot of really good beers; their Black Butte Porter is extremely tasty. And then there's your Newcastles and your Guinnesses and all that.
My favorite cheap macrobrew is High Life. I can't really quantify why, just find it pretty tolerable.
Re: Beer!
I would like to develop more of a palate for beer.
Anyway, if your issue is that you don't like the bitter taste of beer, blonde and wheat ales are a place to start. However, if your issue is that you don't like the taste of alcohol in general, I might not be able to help you. (Is it just beer/wine, or other drinks too? It could be that stronger drinks in general are not your thing.)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 03:32 am (UTC)(link)But I do like ciders, as long as they don't taste too beer-y.
I like wine, particularly sangrias and red wines. I'll drink most any wine though.
Mixed drinks are where it's at for me, especially ones with vodka or tequila. I love margaritas and martinis. The fruitier, the better, but I'll give most anything a shot.
