Fan-hated Characters That You Love (or at least like)

What are some characters that are generally hated (or at least ignored/under appreciated) by fandom but are loved by you? example: Relena from Gundam Wing got a lot of shit back in the day but I thought she was awesome.

Gwen from Torchwood. I didn't love her (I didn't really love any of the Torchwood characters tbh) but I thought she was an interesting and fucked up character who was ultimately a good person even if she made a lot of mistakes. Most of fandom (especially the Janto shippers) thought she was Satan though and it was often difficult to find fics that didn't bash the hell out of her (even if I didn't like Gwen, I would still hate those fics because I dislike character bashing regardless of how I feel about the character in question.)

A lot of the times I'll like or won't have a very strong opinion on a broadly loathed (non-villainous) character.

Martha Jones from Doctor Who.

Yeah, there were a lot of issues with how she was written, but I still love her to bits.

Rick from Degrassi. As far as I can tell, he's got about two fans and I'm one of them.

Most of the Templars we see in the Dragon Age games. I don't love them, but most seem to be decent enough folk, if a bit harsh.

The fandom, however, seems to believe that they all go around rapping mages all the time. : / (At least the parts I've seen.)

Dawn Summers, because I automatically identify with being seen as a bratty younger sibling, and see how that is a really skewed perception, perpetrated by the asshole older siblings of the world.

Usagi Tsukino (I feel like I might be the only person whose favorite senshi she is)

And I don't think she's hated per se, but I like Korra of Avatar a lot. I've been rewatching the show and seeing how so much of her flaws come at least partly from the disservice done to her by the people around her. I mean, she's not just a puppet acting out other peoples' will, but she is someone with no real life experience whose been trapped with high-pressure expectations from age 3. The girl is lucky she can hold a decent conversation with anyone.

Does Hans from Frozen count? He's definitely got his stans, but I think a large majority of fandom hates him.

Chichi from Dragon Ball /Dragon Ball Z.

Toriyama really didn't write her all that well and gave her the short of the stick. Even so, I love her.

Navi.

I didn't think she was all that annoying. I was just kinda content with her. She didn't have much personality but I was disappointed to see her leave me at the end.

For a lot of characters, widespread fan-hating of them causes me to automatically like that character better than I previously would have.

Sansa. She's a realistically written girly teenager who doesn't think outside her bubble at first. So what? Robb's a realistically written masculine teenager who doesn't think outside his bubble ever. It bites them both in the ass disastrously in the end.

I love Nabiki from Ranma 1/2. She's the only character who is actually trying to make the best life out of the situation they are in, and the only one who is not focusing her life around Ranma. He's useful, but generally an annoyance to her and I love that. She just gets so much hate for, well, for having a characterization that isn't about servicing the protagonist's own story.

Insert the name of any female Harry Potter character here. I have no idea why the fandom seems to hate them. Well, actually I DO have ideas... sigh. Put simply, Lily dumped a friend who called her a slur, Tonks was not just Remus's beard (and if Remus had been using her or whatever R/S people still like to claim seven years later, why would it be Remus we'd feel sorry for?), Ginny was a teenage girl whose personality tended to vary based on her comfort level, and they were all in the middle of a war.

I remember liking Joffery from Game of Thrones and was surprised by the amount of hate he had.

But I quit watching the show somewhere in the middle of season 2 and didn't get to see him become the 'most evil mofo everrr' according to the internet.

Still, I thought he was the most interesting one of the characters there.

River song from Doctor Who. Some of her storylines were... pretty bad, but I loved River herself.

Sandor Clegane. Though I'm guessing a lot of the hate he gets is from the whole Sansa/Sandor shipping thing.

The Serkets from Homestuck! More people like Vriska but most people I've noticed really dislike Aranea because they think she's some sort of super mastermind chessmaster planning on ruining the story from her first appearance, when, like Vriska, she's just selfish and impulsive and desperate to be an important hero rather than a supporting character.

I think they're both really interesting.

I actually liked all of the characters on Team Avatar in Korra, even when they were written so badly as to be unwatchable.

Ben from The Walking Dead game. I get why people don't like him, but I always thought he was interesting and probably realistic view of how most people would end up being when suddenly caught in a zombie outbreak.
