I just scheduled a doctor's appointment for Monday morning for the sole purpose of being able to take the day off of work to do the Hobbit marathon at the theater in the afternoon. I'm a horrible person, but I don't feel as bad as I probably should.

Seriously, I just got one yesterday. It took a while for texting to work properly (it seems to be fine now) but I'm really happy with it. It's a Nokia Lumia 530 and I just finished throwing a few ringtones on. It's an easy phone to use, too.

A while back, I saw a secret about the show here, and it piqued my interest. I'd be happy to buy it on DVD, but I'd like to sample the show first to see if it's to my taste. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to track down any episodes online. Does anyone know a safe website where I could watch some episodes for free or with a few ads, Hulu-style?

Big decisions thread

Today I finally made a decision that's been hanging over me for a month: I'm walking away from a project without completing it.

It's a big deal because so much has happened during this project (deaths in the family, becoming critically ill and taking a year to recover) and I've persevered through it all, that to give up now feels...well, crappy. But I need to walk away and do something else before it wrecks my health further.

So what big decisions have you guys made recently?

Tauriel Debate

So, there's this forum topic where a guy was asking female Tolkien fans for their take on Tauriel and whether she was necessary, etc. One of the questions he asked was whether it was necessary to add a woman to the Hobbit (not specifically Tauriel).

Two users got into a debate about this. One said that it would be weird in this day in age to have a movie like the Hobbit (by which s/he meant a movie that was not a "closed set" - a traveling movie -- and that it was three movies) without a woman and the critics would note it.

The other said that most people wouldn't notice, or would expect what was in the book -- that they could accept that the movie would follow book conventions and not expect it to conform to modern day needs. These are both Tolkien geeks, so they can't really divorce themselves from their book knowledge and how regular people would view this.

What do you say? Is adding a woman necessary now for this kind of film? (excluding Tauriel's specific effectiveness or not -- there was a lot of agreement about the handling of her storyline).

I have what I am pretty sure is a flu-shot-defeating strain of flu. I'm trying to decide if I should briefly go in to the office tomorrow to get in touch with my manager and make some arrangements for the project I'm leading.

On the one hand, I know you are not supposed to go expose people to your germs when you're sick.

On the other hand, I'm not bedridden, and the project really would be better off for my making some calls and sharing some documents. I wouldn't be working with anyone in person, just in same office as some people. ...I duuno.

Guys, we've tried a couple of times to take recs for January, but it's been hard for me and Bigpaw to get the post up consistently. I work 4 nights a week, and lately I've been even more distracted by work and holiday stuff and possibly some family stuff that's come up that may interfere even more.

I think it might be wise to just skip January as a book club month - we could even extend the discussion date for All Creatures Great and Small if anyone else thinks they might have trouble finding the time to read the book this month (that's optional though, and I should be able to get it done if necessary).

I'm really sorry about this, guys. :(

(Additionally, if there's anyone else who would like to help out with the running of the club, please let me know. It would be super helpful to have someone who could help cover announcements on the nights I'm not home.)

(Oh, also, if you did rec a book for January - I haven't checked the posts in a couple of days - those recs will still be good to use next time!)

Don't know if you want to try this, but maybe you could use previously recced books that weren't selected, or are on cooldown? Maybe the ones that made it to a tiebreak and didn't get chosen? There's a lot of books that were recced previously, so if no one's reccing for Jan, that might be an option...

Japanese Spitz are in the US????? It's not an AKC registered breed but there are definitely breeders and clubs for them.
