Anybody watching the Oscars today? I don't really care for the ceremony itself but I do enjoy watching all the pretty people on the red carpet, and I usually do something fun food-wise (like go to a favorite restaurant with TVs and watch them there, or make pizza at home, or order Chinese), but I'm sick today (boo, hiss) so nothing but ginger ale. How about you, FS? Do you have a favorite actor or film you're rooting for this year? Do you do anything fun because of the Oscars? Do you not have a single fuck to give? Tell me about it!

I honestly don't think I've been to a movie theater once this past year, I don't watch things until they go on Netflix and even then, my attention span for movies is embarrassingly short. So no, I don't exactly care, but I do want to read tomorrow about all the times the award winners used their mic time to rag on Trump, and then hear Trump throw a fit about it.

Also I hate myself for saying this but I'll probably read the headlines about the best and worst dresses.

Got a couple of issues I can't figure out:

1) I used to be able to set up a page that displayed all of the tags I've ever used and their frequency. I set it up using this script -- http://post-theory.com/tumblr-tag-cloud-javascript -- but it doesn't work anymore. I can set up the page, but no tags ever appear. I've switched themes a couple times, thinking it was a problem with my theme, but that hasn't fixed it. Thinking it was a javascript problem with my browser, I've tried it in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox, on my laptop (Mac) and my work computer (PC) -- no dice. Anybody have any suggestions?

2) Certain tags don't work as tags within my blog -- when I'm in my blog and I click on the tag, instead of seeing all the posts with that tag, I get a "URL not found" error within my blog (i.e., [my-username].tumblr.com/tagged/[mystery-tag], not that the posts don't appear within www.tumblr.com/tagged/[mystery-tag]). The only tag I can find right now that's doing this has hyphens within the tag (e.g., "this dumb-ass tag"), so maybe that's messing things up?

Alright here we go! Sorry for the delay.

So the unfortunate thing about this book is that it is a bit of a heavy read, and I didn't get it until a little over a week ago, and between that and various other IRL things being...things, I didn't get all the way through it, despite the fact that I am enjoying it. I'm going to keep reading it. I also looked up the plot summary so don't worry about spoilers! (The good news is I just ordered the March book and it's supposed to be here within the first week of March, so that won't be a problem next month!)

Sadly it looks like about 75% of the plot happens in the second half of the book (I only got through the first half) and it looks like it gets more and more interesting as it goes along!

So tell me, F!S, what did you think? Do you think these events depicted her realistic enough portrayal of the kind of thing that could happen? Do you think their historical context makes similar events more or less likely to happen then as opposed to now? I'm no history buff, but it's an interesting topic. It's pre-WWII, and I wonder how likely people thought in 1935 that it would be that there would be a WWII. Hitler had already grabbed a lot of power, and I think so had Stalin? The book covers American concentration camps before their equivalent in Germany had been established though I think the gulags in the USSR were already a thing.

The characters were very good. I especially enjoyed Emma, Sissy and Shad. Of course, I'm not sure how Emma's detachment from it all changed in the second half of the book. Sissy was probably my favorite and I found not only that she was a pretty cool lady in her own right, but also her interactions with Doremus were very endearing. (I love father/daughter relationships in general, too.) One thing I find most interesting was Doremus' transformation to an self-described bourgeoisie liberal (pretty accurate) to an active part of the resistance.

Of course one of the big things here, the reason this book was brought up as a possibility, even, is its application to the politics of today. I found Windrip to be very different in general from Trump as a person. Politically he comes from a more liberal direction but presents himself as fairly centrist, though with all the gross bigotries of today's alt-right. He claimed to want a central distribution of money with an annual basic income per family (something he obviously never intended to deliver upon) but also claimed to hate communism, and nobody even seemed to notice the contradiction. That's very similar to today - Trump's followers just tune out things that are inconvenient to hear. :/

The most obvious parallel to me is the open persecution of women, Jews, and black Americans to Trump's attacks on Muslims, Mexicans, and immigrants in general. (And of course, while none of the former three groups have been directly targeted by Trump, they all still experience bigotry at the hands of the alt-right.) The other really interesting parallel to me was in the person of Lee Sarason - while Trump didn't necessarily have an aide at that level before even launching his campaign, Sarason's receipt of a hugely disproportional amount of power and influence immediately after the election reminds me a lot of Bannon, who I find to be the singularly most dangerous person in the Trump administration right now.

Some really important differences - Trump has talked a lot about making our military "strong again" (lol), but hasn't moved to establish any kind of personal militia or paramilitary force. That's a very good thing. Of course, while he has no Minute Men to directly terrorize his opponents, many see the police as a similar threat and the right wing are their staunchest supporters. Additionally, Trump has incited violence at his rallies. We're lucky nothing has happened to the scale of people at rallies being outright killed.

Does anyone think we're close to anything like this happening in America - concentration camps for dissenters, outright civil war? I can't imagine how bloody and destructive that would be with modern weaponry. 0_0 I haven't seen any signs of those things directly but Trump's recent attempts to silence the press are very very very frightening (and that was another almost immediate action that Windrip took; it's a hallmark of dictatorship).

Just in case anybody is still here...

I enjoyed reading this a lot more than I thought I would. There was genuine humor, and genuine suspense. I was nearly late coming back from lunch on a couple of occasions, because I wanted to see what happened next, and I stayed up a couple hours past my bedtime to get to the end.

I liked that it ended on an optimistic note, but without forcing into an "and they lived happily ever after" which would have seemed unrealistic.

What I didn't like was the "evil gay" trope with regards to Sarason, but I recognize that I can't hold a 1935 work of literature up to 2017 standards. (And that there are still works of fiction, even in 2017, that still use the "LGBT villain" trope.)
