Review/Analysis of Poirot's "The Million Dollar Bond Robbery"

(Anonymous) 2017-10-01 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Poirot and Hastings go on the maiden voyage of an ocean liner to protect a valuable item. That is, however, the extent of the similarities to a certain James Cameron movie. Which is probably for the best.

Besides the obvious issues with rampant bigotry and creepy dudes, I mean. What issues bug you?

For me it's that r/crossstitch has lots of beautiful pics of finished projects that get bunches of upvotes but if you have a problem or a question that goes beyond the basics, you might as well save yourself the effort of posting.

That I'd get out the other side and it'd be okay, I guess. And it's true. Life's pretty good now.

I had a shit time at college, but I don't really regret it because I can't imagine how it could have gone differently without me being a fundamentally different person. Not growing up in a super dysfunctional family environment, now that could have made a difference.

That said, if you hate college but choose to finish your degree rather than dropping out, don't fuck it up. Just put in enough work to pass, that's fine. But don't fuck around and procrastinate and fail courses, because that's more $$$ down the drain and more time you have to spend in your shit-hole of choice before graduating. If you need to drop down to fewer courses to finish, do that. But defer instead if you realise you're going to fail.

Help Finding a Song

(Anonymous) 2017-10-01 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
This is a long shot, but here it goes:

A long time ago I used my mp3 player to record a song off a local pop/Top 40s radio station. My mp3 player broke and I can't remember the song title or singer.

I recorded it around the time Shinedown's Second Chance and Coldplay's Viva la Vida was playing, so sometime in 2008.

It was not rap or country.

The singer was male. It was not Michael Jackson, Theocracy, Finger Eleven, or Justin Timberlake.

I the song reminded of the animated TV show version of Beetlejuice.
There was something about mirrors, windows, or portals.

On background checks.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-01 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
To cut a long story short, I have reason to believe that a long-time family friend of mine is being scammed by a con artist, and I'm trying to do a background check on this person. Lots of online background check services say that they're free, but they really just mean that the search is free, and you have to pay to actually see what--if anything--has turned up. I was wondering if anyone here had any advice on how to proceed. I really don't want my friend to get hurt, but I also can't afford the cost of buying access to these public records.

1. To be honest, I was not initially interested in the movie. I thought it was going to be too much of a comedy. By the end I loved it. I am a bit unsure if the amazing ending made me look back on the rest of the movie more favorably.

2. Moana was my favorite character. She was just so amazing. Moana reminds me a lot of my favorite Disney princess, Mulan. I love how they are both proactive in overcoming the conflict in the film. They don't just wait for a prince to save them. The actress was also a beautiful singer. My least favorite was the crab. I just did not like him as a villain, nor did I like his song.

3. My favorite scene BY far was the scene where she walks toward Te Fiti and saving her. The transition from lava to plants was phenomenal. The song in that scene is heartbreaking. I literally replayed it three times the first time I watched it before moving on to the end of the movie.

My least favorite scene was the crab scene. I just didn't like the visuals or the song. It was like a less interesting Dr. Facilier villain scene (who reminds me of Oogy Boogy in The Nightmare Before Christmas).

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score? Obviously, the movie is well regarded for its soundtrack. My favorites were How Far I'll Go Song and Know Who You Are. The score my Mark Mancina is also great if you've not given that a listen. Not one of my favorite scores, but not a bad listen.

5. I don't really know much about what defines 'cinematography'. But, technically this film is a marvel. The water physics are (appropriately) second to none. Especially combined with the hair physics.

1. What was your initial reaction when the movie started? How did that change by the end of the movie?

Initially I wasn't expecting to be blown away, but I have pretty low standards for enjoying animated movies and was expecting to have fun. I found it very well done and very moving and enjoyed it a great deal more than I thought.

2. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Your least favorite character? Why?

Most - Maui, because I am a sucker for a good redemption arc and he was hilarious. I've seen criticism of har har why didn't the ocean just take the heart back huh?!?! Because that wasn't the only goal. The problem going on was Maui had let his insecurities and need to be loved twist him to the point he was willing to attack a goddess in hopes this time it would fill the empty place inside. Putting the heart back wouldn't fix that, he needed redemption and to learn from his mistakes so he could continue to be a hero, not a villain.

Least - Pua. Sorry Pua, you were a generic saccharin animal sidekick and I'm so glad they went with the Too Dumb To Live HeiHei instead.

3. What was your favorite scenes? Your least favorite? Why?

... That's hard.
Favorites - We Know The Way - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubZrAmRxy_M
Song of the Ancestors - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9qw2vN-bgk
Know Who You Are - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4QuKwfv6Wk

The last one especially is just... I cry every time. I cried looking up the clip even though I've seen it dozens of times. I think it's especially a powerful moment because up until now Te Fiti has been a sexy lamp. She's been a passive plot point. Her heart was taken and now it needs to be taken back to this location and put back in place and wheee everything is right. And then the movie twists that and you see her and you see her rage and her suffering and it hits you that she's a person in pain and not just a quest point.

Probably least favorites - After Where You Are, but before Moana leaves. It's important cinematically to establish what she's leaving behind and what she needs to protect, but it's the least exciting part of the movie.

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score?

I really loved the music. The songs were all musically distinctive while showcasing Lin-Manuel Miranda's talent at clever wordplay. I felt like the songs were all power-houses. I also want to say I am ridiculously grateful for Frozen here. I heard that in the making of Frozen, Disney wanted Let It Go to be a standard protag-song. Soft, pretty, wistful. The people making it fought and fought and fought to let Idina Menzel belt it out with passion instead. Eventually Disney reluctantly gave in. And we know how that turned out! So I feel like without that trailblazing battle against Disney's formula, we would not have the stunning performance Auli'i Cravalho gave. We would not have her just screaming out "I AM MOANA!" triumphantly at the end of I Am Moana (Song of the Ancestors)"

I couldn't possibly pick a favorite, I love them all.

My one criticism, the song lyrics that love to do similar lines with slight variations bug me because I get them jumbled and they get stuck in my head later.
See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
See the light as it shines on the sea? It's blinding
See her light up the night in the sea? She calls me

That! It's hard to keep them straight in my head.

5. What did you think of the cinematography?

I thought it was very well done. Some of the shots that stand out in particular are when Moana is standing alone on the top of the entrance to Lalotai and a lot of the Te Ka battle. The water and ocean were animated beautifully too.

This wasn't just a beautiful and fun movie, it was very well plotted too. I love Frozen dearly, but the plot is a mess. I feel like both the Kakamora fight and the brief foray into Lalotai were important to establish that this world is magical and yes, all the stories are real. The Kakamora were also important because it showed a very real threat roaming the ocean and showing why the boats stopped coming back, and a lot of the fancy sailing Maui shows off there is what Moana later uses to get past Te Ka. And I love Tamatoa, lovelovelove. He was a fantastic fun evil villain with style and a great song and his needless exposition had me cracking up the entire time, but they knew not to drag the joke on too long. "You cannot run from me! Oh, you *can* run from me! You keep surprising me!"

Little details I liked, both the father and Maui had some painful backstory going on, but while Moana was a catalyst, it wasn't her job to fix them. They worked through their issues off screen. I didn't even realize Te Fiti was Tahiti until I saw it pointed out. I loved when the ancestor chief touched his shell and nodded to Moana. (makes me wonder since grandma had it, if Moana's dad refused it after the boat accident, not wanting to be reminded of their history) I loved HeiHei so much. I know people who keep chickens and they just went nuts when they watched it, they loved the derpy chicken portrayal so much.

If I could have changed anything it would be a teenie thing, instead of her dad listing of "My father and his father and his father..." Just change one to 'mother' to make it not weird that Moana's going to be the next chief.

It's a movie that I notice and find something new to think on every time I watch it.

1. I was hoping to enjoy it on some level, but I usually like Disney movies so I wasn't expecting to hate it and I ended up really loving it which was nice.

2. Probably Moana, I enjoyed her fire and spirit and the fact that she did try to do what her father wanted at first because she wanted to make her family and people proud. But ultimately she couldn't resist(and wasn't supposed to resist) the call of destiny. And dat hair animation bro.

3. Favourite was probably the ocean parting towards Te Fiti or the spirit manta-ray scene, oh and her initial attempt at boating didn't end out so well I thought it was a nice touch that she wasn't instantly good at sailing. Least favourite was maybe the crab, but I dunno in general I enjoyed a lot of it.

4. I loved the score, I like it when music scores are themed around the culture or setting they're in and for me Moana mostly did a really good job of that(obvs some songs weren't a I do like those a little less as a result). And having a native Polynesian language in one of the songs was something I really liked as well, it was something different which I always appreciate. My favourite songs were How Far I'll Go and We Know the Way.

5. The water physics, THE WATER. Holy shit it looked so good and when her hair was wet it actually looked like it was, they've gotten really good at rending hair in recent years tbh and it shows. But yeah in general the animation was beautiful.

But overall I loved this movie, definitely in my top 2 favourties of their current 3D stuff, and the chicken had me laughing way more than I should.

Not many thoughts on any of the questions, or any to start on my own... But to make the responses I do have...

2. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Your least favorite character? Why?

Favourite - Maui and Moana. The way they bumped off each other was a lot of fun, and how they subtly affected each other was a joy to watch.
Least - Moana's gramma. Just...yeah, sorry, she's more a talking macguffin than a character. For Moana to have her arc, her gramma's role was needed, but she clearly existed just to point Moana the way she had to go, so M could get going without being The Rebellious Daughter. (Despite this, I did love Moana spotting the glowing ray/Gramma's spirit...but that's entire because of how it affected Moana, not any fondness for her gramma.)

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score?

I loved it, on the whole. But I'm going to buck the trend I've seen in most places.

How Far I'll Go is by far my least favourite of the songs. It's just...bland and unmemorable. It fills a similar role to Belle or Let It Go, but just isn't as good a song as either of them. And...honestly, the Where You Are scene did a much better job of doing How Far I'll Go's job, to me, as well as it being a better song.

And going off script... I'm surprisingly happy that they cast Alan Tudyk as HeiHei - it puts him in the movie (since he'd been in Frozen, Big Hero Six, and Zootopia, so it's good to continue the pattern), but making his main role a non-verbal animal means they don't have to break their desire to have the main roles filled by actors from various Polynesian peoples.
