Things you straight up don’t get

Why people care about being spoiled. If knowing a twist ruins it for you, it wasn’t that good in the first place.

Re: Things you straight up don’t get

Because the experience of watching or reading something is different if you know what's going to happen in advance? I don't care about it personally, but it seems really simple and obvious why it bothers some people?

I get why others don't want to be spoiled. What I don't get is the insistence that everyone should hate spoilers and the comments about those of us who like to be spoiled not knowing how to really enjoy something for the first time.

I like to be surprised.

But I don't expect others to feel the same so I make sure to block and avoid spoilers for myself, everyone else can spoil themselves as much as they please.

I legitimately don't get how you don't get that. I can tell you're defensive about people who complain about spoilers, but how in the world is it difficult to understand why someone would want to experience a plot first hand - especially one that has a definite plot twist?

Re: Things you straight up don’t get

(Anonymous) 2017-10-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't always care, but maybe it would help to know that it's not so much about twists?

It's more because when I love something I want to experience the things I love about it when I'm focused on enjoying it. I don't want to find out my ship happens based on an offhand tag on tumblr. I want to experience the storytelling.

It's not that knowing a twist ruins a movie/show/book/whatever for me. I can (and will) reread/rewatch media already knowing what happens and generally still enjoy it as much as I did the first time. It's that I only get a chance to watch something with fresh eyes and no real expectations once. I understand that some people don't like that experience. Some people like to know things in advance. And that is fine. But I don't understand why wanting to see something unfold as it happens is an odd thing. I can reread/rewatch something many many times, but I can only watch something unspoiled once. And I like that experience.

Censoring slurs on the internet. It should be obvious from the context that you’re not using it against someone.

Re: Things you straight up don’t get

(Anonymous) 2017-10-16 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
The argument is that those words are wrong in and of themselves, not just when used as invective against someone else.

Re: Things you straight up don’t get

(Anonymous) 2017-10-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It's part of communication though. Saying "Man, my computer is being a c*** right now" is sort of along the lines of saying "This is really frickin' messed up."

Why say frickin' or freaking or any of the others when everyone knows what F word you're hinting at? Because they communicate different tones.

This so much. If you want to be completely unspoiled, don't watch trailers. Don't ruin trailers for those of us who like them the way they are. Stop complaining. Trailers are going to spoil. That's what they do. If you don't want any spoilers, stay away from trailers (and the internet).

When I ask for spoilers and people get all wishy-washy about it. Look, I asked for a list of who dies. I enjoy movies a lot more when I know the death-list beforehand. Don't give me this "Well, maybe not any main characters. Depending on your definition of main character. I mean technically..."

SPOIL ME, I ASKED FOR IT.

Beef cooked rare. At some point my jaw gets exhausted.

Also, wine reductions. I can always taste and smell the alcohol so it’s always off-putting when a dish comes with them.
