One of my favorite (super small-time, super indie) bloggers had a habit of going on about Burning Man. It was enough to make me roll my eyes and sometimes wonder if I should stop reading.

This year the boyfriend that introduced her to Burning Man dumped her, and while I feel bad for her at the end of what she thought was a rock-solid relationship, a not-insignificant part of me is thinking, "Fucking finally, maybe she'll stop with all this Burning Man bullshit."

I like Dany less than I used to, but I'm still downright outraged at the idea that she'll only get her throne back by sharing it with a man. Not that she's my favorite horse in this race to begin with, since like many other contenders she seems to care more about the concept of ruling than about what the actual people of Westeros want (which I'm pretty sure at this point is "just stop marching armies across our fields please"), but if she was going to sit on the Iron Throne, I wanted her to be doing so without having to share with her Secret Nephew (and if the Targaryen rule is coming back, could we maybe nix the incest this time around? Maybe?).

I honestly didn't find Elrond particularly memorable in either the books or the movies, but I'll never understand why they cast what's-his-name. He's so creepy looking and unattractive. He's a great actor and iconic in other roles - a perfect Agent Smith, but an ethereally-beautiful elf? Nawwww.

There were DEFINITELY fanfics that were stronger than the last few books. But in all fairness, when you become that hyper-famous and inspire such an enormous fandom, that probably would've happened even if the last book or two weren't total crap.

I always wondered what that would be like. Rowling isn't an amazing writer in terms of literary craftsmanship, but she is successful at being quirky, enchanting, and easy enough to follow along that audiences get sucked in and don't let go. That's a great skill. Plus, she built a sandbox world that was exciting and imaginative. Plot-wise, she tends to put out a bunch of threads and tie them together at the end, which is satisfying to read and appropriate for her target audience, if not particularly masterful. I don't begrudge her her success at all. But when you get so famous, and ignite such an enormous fandom... was she nervous about writing the later books? At that point, I wonder if she knew she couldn't keep up with people's expectations. Not just limited to fanfic proper, but I've heard much more satisfying and well-thought out theories and speculations, and plot suggestions, than what ended up being canon. There was too much creative energy out there, so I guess even if the final books had been decent, they would've probably disappointed.

OP, I also haaate feeling second-hand embarrassment. Even in stuff that's just plain comedy, but especially when it's NOT comedy and the scene is supposed to demonstrate how pathetic a character is. It really makes me uncomfortable.
