Honestly, my opinion on Flanagan at this point is that he's someone who would be really well-served by collaborating with another strong creative voice in some way.

I think getting The Pure Flanagan often gets a little... weedy, and windy, and as you say self-important. But he's clearly a phenomenal writer and creator with a strong aesthetic and stuff to say. He just needs a partner to smooth out the rough edges.

I loved Haunting of Hill House (rewatch every year) and The Fall of the House of Usher. I absolutely hated Bly Manor and Midnight Mass. Just so much talking.

The Fall of the House of Usher has family dynamics and...well, something that could be classified as a "haunting." It's also chock full of absolutely delicious rage over a not-so-distant medical scandal.

I actually quite liked MM but damn the monologuing was dialled up to 11 and I can see why it would be off-putting. I didn't love Bly as much as a lot of people seem to and think Hill House is basically the high bar that can't be reached, even with the weaker final episode. House of Usher was great for Poe Easter eggs but not really as suspenseful once you knew a kid was going to die every episode (and if you're familiar with Poe you kinda knew how they would too.)

Will be interesting to see how The Life of Chuck goes. It's still adjacent to MF's usual work (being a Stephen King adaption) but I gather from people who have read the short story maybe not as heavy (if at all) on the supernatural/hauntings?

But I think I agree that I'd love him to do another haunted house sort of deal. Not sure what book/material I'd pick, I'd need to think about it. I mean I suppose he could cheat and stick with King adaptions by doing an updated version of Rose Red. Idk.

Personally House Of Usher is my favorite of his miniseries. There was a couple of monologues, IIRC, but they weren't that long, and the delivery was weird and intense enough that it kept them from feeling overly longwinded and pretentious to me. YMMV, though. It's definitely the most, "grab your popcorn," of his miniseries. It's basically a much less subtle version of Succession meets supernatural Edger Allen Poe horror shenanigans. House of Usher is thoroughly macabre, but there's something darkly cheeky about it, like it's whispering to you, "You know it's totally okay to enjoy watching these fuckers bite it."

Flannagan is a skilled creator, but I do find that his longer-form work can get a little ponderous for my taste. House of Usher, with its macabre provocativeness, manages to circumvent that issue for me.

Try Schitt's Creek. That has a queer character and later a queer relationship, but the focus isn't on either character being queer or in a queer relationship. They just are.

Our Flag Means Death is also great for this.
