[A Song of Ice and Fire]

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I was so worried when HBO adapted Game of Thrones for television with such an attractive male cast, and that was solely because I knew whiny fangirls would latch onto it. Well, joke's on you! We've been making fun of Gurm's misogynistic fatliness for years!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
At least he's not John Ringo.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Or John Norman.

OH JOHN RINGO NO

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the books, but I can see how the series has a lot of appeal to men...

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
But most of the male characters are hot too: Jaime, Ned, Robb, Renly, Drogo, Mormont...

Surprisingly, ASOIAF is like most media- some fail, some not. Personally, I find enough of it to be relatable and interesting to not care that much. That said, I would never recommend them to anyone without the caveat that it's full of triggery rape stuff.

The fact that almost all the sex is done with the woman on all fours and with the man positioned behind, and the large amount of rape scenes, is pretty much saying, yeah, you're right.

Opinions will, of course, vary. I don't think there's much wish-fulfillment of any kind in this series, honestly: rough world, that one.

Tough break that it detracts from your ability to enjoy reading them, in any case. I'm sorry to hear that.

I disagree. I think it's too bleak and harsh on EVERYBODY to be wish-fulfillment, and there is a certain amount of gender-based fail but I think it's incidental due to the world it's set in rather than indicative of the author's feelings. It's a fantasy analog of the War of the Roses, the late 1400s weren't exactly the most female-friendly of times.

Speaking as a female fan of the series, I never got this impression. Is the world setting misogynistic, male-dominated, sexist? Yes. Most definately, but that's part of the setting, portraying a more realistic medieval society than what is commonly seen in fantasy fiction that takes medieval influence for its world-setting. Most fantasy set in such a world tends to brush over/out how bad it could be for a woman in those times, asoiaf doesn't and I do give it props for sticking to that, yet there are strong women to be found who do work around these restrictions and even when they're looked down on for going against societal norms (Brienne anyone?) stay convicted.

Portraying a misogynistic world doesn't mean you agree with it. I don't know anything about the author's personal views, but I think for the most part the story is just depicting what's there, realistically and brutally (reflecting the period of history it's based on).

The female characters are good not just because they're strong (which they are, in varied ways, which I do like) but because they're just as complex and believable as the male characters. Just my opinion, anyway.

I'm kinda happy about this secret, because I've heard things along these lines pretty often by now (even before I read the books). Having read the books ... I don't see it. I see a misogynistic world, true. I don't see how that makes the books misogynistic. I was actually surprised by how non-misogynistic it was, after what people had told me about it.

So, this is a serious question, anyone care to explain what exactly is considered misogynistic here? I'm genuinely curious.

As someone who has recently started reading Game of Thrones, I can tell you for an absolute fact that you feel this way because you ARE reading patriarchal, male wish-fulfillment. The author just happens to be good enough to make it readable.

And strong female characters? Yeah, that is NOT how you do them. :(

Anyway, back to the point: I can see where people are coming from with this, but when I read them all I see is a lot of crappy stuff happening to everyone, because there's a war going on and it's basically a free-for-all bloodbath at the moment. I'm not saying there's nothing problematic with it at all ever, but when people talk about misogyny in the books, all I can think of is Cersei's POV chapters and how she's always pissed off that the only thing keeping her from taking the power she wants is that she doesn't have a penis. She's calling out the misogyny in the books herself. And yeah, like you said, there ARE a lot of strong female characters in there. I find the (massive) cast to be pretty well-balanced, really. I guess that's why it doesn't bother me as much as it might in other contexts. (I'm oversimplifying it, but I'm tired and melting from the heat, so.)

IDK, the most wish-fulfillment-esque thing I think I've seen in there are the descriptions of all the food, and that's because GRRM is a self-professed foodie.

[identity profile] marsdragon.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
...no shit?

Seriously, what did you expect?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't rightly conceive of how much of a masochist someone would have to be for ASoIaF to count as wish fulfilment.

Hahaha, what do you expect a medieval setting is going to be like? The inklings of feminism doesn't begin until the early 1800s. I took a lot of medieval history classes and GRRM books line up with how women were treated in those times.
