How is parenthood selfish? When you have a kid, your life becomes about them. Part of the reason I never want kids is because I want my time to myself and you can't do that as a parent.

No, it's really not. If you are a selfish person, you better not consider parenthood, because there is a ton of sacrifice involved and a whole lot of not getting your way. Only in bizzaro land is being a parent a selfish act.

I know that this is an unpopular opinion and whatnot, but I'm inclined to agree. There's no way to ask a child if they want to be born. I see the process of pregnancy and birth as the process of forcing somebody into existence...
which is rather creepy. In many cases it works out just fine, of course, so usually it's not a problem. It is quite painful when it is, though.
Suicide is not completely out of question, but these are two very different things: to be never born and to be born and then kill yourself.

Everything and everyone is inherently selfish.

The difference is that having kids is applied selfishness rather than pure selfishness--it's extending your sense of self to the living being you've produced, and hence extending your selfishness to cover them too.

i just can't with all the butthurt childfrees in this thread. you don't want kids, cool. but having kids is not selfish, at very least, not inherently and certainly fucking not a morally bad decision. omg just stahp

I really think it's a mistake to second guess someone elses reasons and ability to be a good parent, especially when you don't know the person. I've seen total screw ups pull their act together to an incredible degree once they have a child, I've seen supposedly "perfect parent" types turn out to be cold, nasty, resentful parents. It's a transformative event, and not one that outsiders can really predict.

One thing for certain won't happen is treating a baby like it's a doll for dressing up. Or like a puppy to be played with for only as long as you feel like, then ignored. She will probably have to hire a nanny for her career's sake, but you know what? Chances are she'll figure it out, and come up with some family plan that works for her and her kid. In the mean time, this is all just gossip fodder of the nastiest sort.

I don't think the reasons matter as much as how she treats the child. Meaning, I don't really care if her reasons were stupid and selfish as long as she loves the child.

And honestly now, dressing up your kid like a living doll is like the best thing in the world! (Until they can actually form opinions and that particular fun is over.)

Oh if they dont' like it, they will let you know long before that.

My godson made it clear to all of us he hated socks 2 hours after birth. had to get him one pieces for the longest time till he was old enough to realize he disliked cold feet more.

I'm pretty sure she got pregnant because she knows reality stardom is not forever and being the babymama of one of an extremely successul artist/producer will mean she is set for life

I've been roped into watching far too many Keeping up with the Kardashians episodes and I remember her talking often about how badly she wanted to be a mother and she looked forward to eventually having children (to a lesser extent than her sister Chloe though). The extra fame probably doesn't hurt though

Do you watch the show? There have been multiple times where she has expressed how much she wants to be a mother. She has also mentioned her fear of not being able to conceive...I think she does genuinely want to have a child. However, from watching the show, I also know she has the tendency to get herself into situations, realize it's not how she thought it would be, and bail, so I won't say I'm not a bit worried for the kid.

I know absolutely nothing about the Kardashians, so I can't comment on that, but I have often thought about how difficult it would be to rear children in the public eye. I had a great deal of sympathy for Britney Spears and the way she behaved after her first child was born because I had post-partum depression pretty severely for a year after my daughter was born (which was my interpretation of what was fueling Britney's behavior). And I often thought how grateful I was that no cameras ever caught me crying or behaving irrationally or looking like shit because losing it in private was sucky enough. :(

So, all of that to say that I can't imagine how difficult it would be to parent a kid when my every single move was documented and dissected in the media. Granted, the vast majority of celebrities have chosen that life and generally embrace the public spotlight, so *shrugs* IDK

I reaaally dislike papperazzi first of all( seriously people taking a picture behind someone's back without their consent while they're taking their morning walk and then writing up an article about how trashy they are-does that sound like pleasant people to you...like at all? )

Also I often find myself feeling pity for celebrities who may be rich but have insane expectations put on them and get a lot of ugly comments when they don't live up to it. Also they get a lot of horrible hateful comments on the internet . I don't care how rich a girl is-reading about people wishing for you to die in a tour bus crash when you're 16 years old has got to sting. Especially taking into account the developmental stage teenagers are in)

It's a bit worrying when people justify treating someone horribly with "oh well she has a lot of money so she won't be hurt/deserves it".

Ugh, I don't pay much attention to celeb gossip but that brittany spears stuff was everywhere and I felt pretty bad for her. Especially because she started getting a little chubby (a cute chubby) and people acted like she was a WHALE when she was really like a size 10 or 12 (if she ever even got to a size 14, I'll eat my hat)

Most likely, her kid will mostly be raised by a nanny. While I think the concept is bullshit, better a nanny than Kim herself influence a child.

The only reason couples had kids, and not just one but 5 or 10 if they could, was because life expectancy was so low.

Teen brides were also the norm for this very reason.

These days, there is literally no reason to have children beyond 1 if any at all. It's incredibly backwards the way people think about family.
