I hate to break it to you, but liking a character because you find their voice aesthetically pleasing does not make you less shallow than liking them because you find their body aesthetically pleasing.

16. Man, you know, it's people like you that make people like me rush back into the series of tubes! And yes, I do enjoy the activities you mentioned wholeheartedly, but the way you assert it makes you sound like you have a superiority complex that can rival oh, let's say, a pretentious internet troll? Maybe if people showed a little more kindness in this messed-up society, then maybe others like me can get away from the net and enjoy a decent and oh-so-normal life?

(Anonymous) 2007-09-06 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
OP of 16 is filled with unwarranted self-importance.

ELEVEN, TWENTY FOUR AND TWENTY FIVE!

11) That is the most AWESOME image EVER. Oranges! LAWLS! <333

24) I once checked out a guy at the grocery story I used to work at who looked EXACTLY like freaking ROCK LEE from Naruto. I mean the eyebrows, the tight musculature, the slightly lanky build, the bowl cut, EVERYTHING. (He was even wearing a green shirt!) I wanted to jump over my till and fangirl all over him. But I didn't, cause I try not to terrify total stangers or customers that much.

25) Man, I HATE THAT TOO! The thought process for me goes something like...

I'm mad at you! I would LIKE to just hate you in that not-really-hate way that I hate ALL the total strangers on the internets who disagree with me... but that icon is hilarious and it makes you, therefore, just a little bit cool. Now I have to think about you in a more complex manner than just 'you hate what I love, blah on you'. Now there is PARTIAL LIKING involved! Way to tax my brain other poster. Boo on you. ;_;

5. I'm sure there have been LARPs for Archie, but it doesn't seem to be one of those things everyone knows of, so it'd be harder to find.

The fandom itself apparently is nuts (not surprisingly, most who read the comics are teenyboppers) - I heard there's Archie/Weatherby fics.

(And um, is Richie new? I don't remember a villian with that name.)

14. To be fair, some Remus/Sirius actually works well with canon.

ETA, of sorts re: 5

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I realized you meant the movie - there IS a movie, but from the looks of it, it's rather shallow and just uses the Archie characters more than anything.

Also, realized you meant "Reggie", not Richie. I would hardly call him a villian, though - he wasn't nice, but a villian?

15. It does, sorry.

16. LOL, this secret will get a lot of "don't tell me what to do" replies, but I gotta say, I pretty much agree. I'm glad for fandom, sometimes, because I made friends through it and all. But all of my most memorable experiences and accomplishments have been offline, with only a small number of those being fandom-related (such as seeing a movie, meeting an actor, etc). Fandom is an okay hobby or interest, but more and more people seem over-invested in it than I see to remember. Creepy.

22. Oh please. Crap musicals? Not that the other shit is much better, but come on. It has "a tune" too. Sorry you're too ignorant to pick it out.

23. "...if she were a guy"? But it sounds like she is, sorta kinda?

Re: 22

(Anonymous) 2007-09-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry YOU'RE too ignorant to appreciate an art form like musicals and know they aren't crap.

23. I think Haruhi is actually extremely interesting and refreshing when considering the vast majority of shoujo manga heroines. Don't get me wrong, I love shoujo manga and read a lot of it, but most of the female leads are just a rehash of the same character (perky, ditzy, give-it-my-all) who fall for the same basic guy (serious, aloof or hotheaded, cold to the heroine but slowly warms up). It's an okay set-up but Haruhi is such a wonderful change.

27. I have never seen this, but I do scoff at people who think anime are so funny but that no American shows (animated or live) are. As if that somehow makes them more sophisticated. Some anime and manga I think are funny, but I am proud to have a very American sense of humor and laugh way more at Futurama and the Simpsons and the Office and Scrubs.

[identity profile] speaky-bean.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
18. I started liking Kankuro when I saw his INTESTINES, not his shirtless bod. It was the same episode, I suppose, but I couldn't care less about how he looked with his shirt off. Other characters look better anyway. But who else gets their intestines shown? That was AWESOME.

And you know most of those people are just trying to top each other w/ shock value. All of those secrets either seem totally made-up or just way too vague or way too mushy. ...I like it here.

22. WELCOME TO THE FANDOM!! *embraces you* Do you hang out at any Broadway comms or forums? Might help. And THIS (http://community.livejournal.com/broadwaysecrets/) is a place you must start going to. It's such fun.

23. I couldn't agree with you more. :D

8. TRULY ONE OF THE MOST EPIC FANARTS OF ALL TIME. There are very very few that I like more than that.

28. I think it's because not only does fandom attract people who aren't quite the mainstream, but because fandom as a whole is so incredibly open and accepting of sexuality that people don't need to hide if they do have lesbian or bi tendencies.

Oh and SIXTEEN

[identity profile] sparklemagpie.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
While I don't think being an anime and fandom embroilled hermit that has no outside life is neccessarily something to be proud of... some people LITERALLY have NOTHING ELSE in this world that they call home except for the internet and common fandoms.

I'm sure lots of them would like to have the outside life you talk about, but many don't have that and never will.

Perhaps they should aspire to more, but for those of them that have no way out, comments like yours just make them ashamed of what happiness and friendship they've managed to find, as if it's something less worthy than what you might have IRL.

It's not. It's just different. So don't act so superior about it, please?

Re: Oh and SIXTEEN

[identity profile] iamadoughnut.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, who are all these people who can't go to the library occasionally and check out something not fandom-related? Or otherwise do something inexpensive and low-impact? I'm willing to bet that the number of people who are truly housebound or otherwise incapable isn't all that high.

13. I know what that's like. It's a good feeling, isn't it, when you discover someone's printed off something you wrote to read offline.

15. Most of fandom IS in it for the porn. That doesn't mean fandom is only for porn, just that a lot of those in fandom are there for that. I admit to being one of them. XD

Look, if you're not into porn, who cares? I don't care. Just accept that most of fandom is about porn. It's the nature of the beast, I'm afraid. That shouldn't stop you from being part of fandom though.

17. I wouldn't be ashamed of that. At least you're trying to make sure your sex scenes are good. How you practice writing sex scenes doesn't matter to me. If the finished product is good, who cares how you got there?

28. Please, I knew I was bi (pansexual really, but that's a long story) long before I ever knew what fandom was.

23

[identity profile] avianthropy.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I love Haruhi and I'm not even much of an Ouran fan.

But I'm getting tired of the assumption that certain female characters would get so much less flack if they were guys. From what I've seen/understand of the fandom, Haruhi is a fairly popular character who some people happen to think is boring? I can think of lots of male characters that applies to.

7. Without the anorexia? I've seen at least three "Fandom made me anorexic!" secrets here since I joined, and that was less than a month ago.

22. For what it's worth, I like your taste in music. I prefer music that has an actual tune, too. And that doesn't make you wince on behalf of the vocal cords of the singer.

27. Storytime! A long, long time ago when I was an anime n00b, I met a guy who was wiser in the ways of anime than I. He asked me what my thoughts on Excel Saga were, and I said I'd never heard of it. To which he replied (something along the lines of) "Good, never watch it -- it's horrible. I can't understand why anyone likes it." Curious as to what could inspire such hate, I did watch it -- and I really enjoyed it. So the moral of this story is... actually, it hasn't got one. But I might have to check out Gintama now.

[identity profile] xfwee.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
5. There was that movie on VHS... but I don't believe that fared well.

At all.

16. Some people have social ineptitudes. It's much easier for them to bond over things they're interested in without any real life confrontation. Just because you enjoy other more accepted and productive activities doesn't make the people that spend their time in forums any lesser than you, honestly. Let people do what makes them happy.

Re: 5

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I forgot about the movie - yeah, apparently now that I remember, it was Archie!Adult. Well, PG-13, but still. And strange. None of the characters changed - they were adult versions of the characters.

11. The picture... She has killed me. Killed me dead with laughter.

12. Haha. Love. So much love. <3

15. I get how you feel. While I do like the occasional smut, I'm just not that big a fan of it. I end up skipping those bits in fics sometimes.

16. Wait... Are you talking about a ...life? I remember... I downloaded one once. But I lost it when I forgot to back up my computer. Woe. *tear* >__>;

28. Not just in fandom, but on the net generally I tend to see a lot of girls being OMG LESBIAN or Bi, without actually having ever made out with a girl, except maybe a kiss with their equally OMG LESBIAN best friend.
It's just a fashion, and I think it's insulting towards those who really are gay

[identity profile] avianthropy.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
So I guess straight people shouldn't claim to be straight unless they've kissed someone of the opposite sex and liked it, either?

8. I don't think so either but I still love it to death. That sounds kinda contradictory.
18. I didn't think he was hot with/without makeup/a shirt/that ridiculous cat hat/whatever. I didn't pay attention to his voice either... I really don't get why people think he's so hot! That's a nice fanart of him though <3
20. I do that but with pairings. I feel you. D+
26. Thaaat sucks. But seriously, if your only Naruto fandom friend would dump you for not liking his/her OTP? Go make new friends! Or if you don't want to, just uhh, avoid the subject? Bring up something else? Get an OTP and spamshare that baby? (I know you can pick one~! KakaIru, SasuNaru, LeeSaku, ZabuHaku... I like Iruka/Gaara myself >_<)

[identity profile] jantra.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
18) I personally think he's hotter with the outfit and makeup... and I HATE his English voice. I think Kankuro is hot because he's a puppetmaster... okay, and the makeup. :3 I also happen to adore his personality and -Japanese- voice. ...The ridiculous cat hat is a traditional hat. XD It's kinda hot too. And that fanart is awesome.

26) ...................Iruka/Gaara? How... How... did that one even come into existance, I gotta ask? And I second [livejournal.com profile] roomofawakening. Just get into your own OTP and just let her have hers. ^_^

Don't worry, you're doing a great job. There's no need to feel "wrong" about it. And thanks for helping us all get started!
I'm positive I know what fandom this is, but somehow I don't think it's the best idea to announce it here. The clues are very subtle. I think only the people who need to know will figure it out.

[identity profile] sky-pirate-tat.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:49 am (UTC)(link)

13. XD I do that too! I once printed my friend's fic before I went to the dentist (to get my wisdom teeth pulled). It helped me calm down to read her fic before the surgery.

16. Same here. Fandom is fine as a hobby but if it's all there is to your life. . .

28. I think there are just as many lesbians/bi girls in and out of fandom. Girls are more open about their sexuality than men are inside and out of fandom. Plus, from what I've heard guys who are gay/bi keep their sexuality hush hush in fandom because of the bizzare sort of yaoi fangirlsfor certain reasons.

[identity profile] wao.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
