<u<And you'll still look like a complete illiterate douchebag. DEAL WITH IT.</u>

because of the fact that you haven't read them, you can't possibly know whether Harry Potter is better than the ones you listed. so the boggling depths of your idiocy are astounding.

7. You need to read real fantasy books instead of the ones that everyone automatically recommends to Harry Potter fans.

Unless you want to be really typical of that fandom and act like Harry Potter was the only book ever written.

7. I'll never read all those books.

I tried, and they were all boring as hell. But then again, maybe fantasy is a genre that just can't grip me that well. I've always been a diehard animal fiction fan.

Then again, Skulduggery Pleasant is the only fantasy...ish...book I'd ever read again. :/

I like how everyone's spazzing over it. Yes, the OP is making a ridiculous argument, but you guys are kind of proving him/her right here.

[identity profile] ensuing.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Animal fiction? Hells yeah! ... the His Dark Materials series does have some cool animals though... talking armored bears! They're totally the best part of the books. =D

21. While I can see the possibility of Edgeworth/Franziska happening, I know if I ever wrote it, their familial relationship would either STOP them from being anything else, or probably have to be worked with A LOT. I like them as a non-sexual couple, even though I guess anything goes (and I don't mind if someone writes them convincingly) but yeah. Family. They're so much sweeter that way. :3

28. PLEASE BE MY BEST FRIEND NOW? I used to like Subaru/Seishirou a lot, but now... while I find it 'pretty', that's all it is. Hokuto was wonderful love, and gah. Now that I'm older, I just can't see the chemistry between Subaru and Sei either. It's just so... BAD. ;; Way to go, CLAMP.

When the third season premiered I was all, "Hey, another Digimon season, yay . . . wait what is this crap?!" and got out of it for a while. Then I went back and watched some S1 reruns on Cartoon Network or whatever it is that's showing it these days, and fell back in love. I even tried watching the newest season a couple months ago(in Japanese with captions), but that didn't really do it for me. Point is, as you've already seen by previous comments, you're not alone. :)

7. LOL, nothing will beat Harry Potter? And you're saying that without reading any other books? Thats like blocking your ears and yelling "LALALA MY BOOK WILL ALWAYS BE BETTER". Please, Harry Potter is written by an infant compared to other books out there. You're missing out on some amazing books, not necessarily the ones in the secret too.

10. Me too, I keep the dub on my computer all the time for watching, and I don't care that my friends (who are all 18-20) make fun of me for it. :D

14. I actually kind of a ship it, among other pairings. Oishi is so much fun to pair up.

16. How is she a Mary Sue waiting to happen? She's barely said anything yet, and it's not like she's been around long enough for you to even know. Her power is actually pretty interesting. I'm not really caring too much about her, but the reason that she's so popular? AKATSUKI WITH TITS. Habeeb it.

It's funny and sort of disenheartening how many people immediately focus on those three words and not the entire rest of the post.

If someone either appears to completely not understand a MAJOR and explicitly defined point of their relationship... or worse, chooses to willfully ignore it, sugarcoat it, or make it something it isn't for the sake of forcing them into a romance...

...I don't quite understand what exactly is wrong with losing respect for them as a writer.

12. To tell you the truth, I think both Hidan and Shikamaru were justified in what they did---Shikamaru because, uh, he's a ninja, and Hidan because he was defending himself.

16. The guys in this series are more of 'mary sues' than Konan is. And she has just as much personality as Itachi.

But but.

You can't look at things objectively and understand the points of both the villains and the heroes! IT MUST BE ONE OR THE OTHER. Either Naruto is right, or Sasuke is. Either the Akatsuki is right, or Konoha is. PICK A SIDE, WE'RE AT WAR

Also, pfft everyone knows that female characters need to be held to a different standard than male ones. We keep it in the Closet of Unconscious Sexism, along with the Fandom Isn't Misogynist It's Just Yaoi Fangirls excuse.

#2!

(Anonymous) 2007-10-02 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
It was.

It was put on by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-on-Avon (no, I'm not kidding) and then ran five performances on Broadway before folding. You can sorta hear why when you listen to the bootleg--the songs between Carrie and her mom are amazing, and everything else is sorta meh. (Plus there's some AMAZINGLY stupid dialogue.) But the bad parts are so bad they're awesome, and the great parts are just really well done.

So yeah. GOOGLE AND DOWNLOAD. SHARE IN THE SHAAAAME. :D

37: I guessing it'd be easier if the anime wasn't so extraordinarily awful. D: it's good for the lolz, though.

[identity profile] pichi.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
But if someone really thinks it's that awful then why would they be in the fandom writing fic for it? I'm not arguing the quality; it isn't a very good anime in terms of animation or in terms of having a coherent or consistent plot. But the real point of the secret seems to be wondering why people can't be bothered to watch a show they love enough to write fic for. Makes sense if you ask me.

21.

[identity profile] laserdragon.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, Edgeworth never says he considers her to be his sister. If you think about how Edgeworth came to be part of that "family," and also take into consideration how Franziska's view of the universe is not always made of the Earth Logic, we really don't know if he would return those feelings. Calling them siblings is an interpretation of canon. It's a interpretation with canon backing, and frankly one I agree with. As siblings is how I generally write them. But it's not canon. It's an interpretation. There is a difference.

Re: 21.

(Anonymous) 2007-10-01 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, we know for a fact that Franziska DOES consider him to be her "little brother" (as she says outright). And given the way they interact? I think it really does speak for itself, particularly at the end of 2-4 and in the third game.

21 OP here...

(Anonymous) 2007-10-01 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, a few things.

First, to clarify the secret, since apparently I phrased a few things wrong:

This doesn't apply to anybody and everybody who ships Miles/Franziska, not by a long shot. It isn't simply "Oh, you like them as a ship? Well then you must be the scum of the earth!" at all.

As a writer, I try to take inordinate amounts of care when dealing with my fiction. I try to know and understand the relationship between the characters beforehand, because without a good grasp of that canon dynamic, I feel that my writing won't be nearly as good as it could be. If something in canon interferes or contradicts with the story I want to tell, then I either have to incorporate it into the story and into the plot (and DEAL with it) or change the story.... not change the canon.

That's hugely important to me as a writer.

In the PW games, I absolutely adore the dynamic that Miles Edgeworth and Franziska von Karma have with one another. It's possibly my favorite in the entire series... and it is very much a familial relationship. They see each other as siblings, and interact accordingly. It's adorable and awesome, and again, one of my favorite dynamics in a series filled with great relationships.

However, the VAST majority of people who I see shipping these two or writing about them... completely ignore this PRIMARY facet of their relationship. Whether they didn't get it while playing, or willfully choose to ignore it/sugarcoat it/pretend it's something it isn't... they don't take it into account at all. And it -does-. It's hugely central to their relationship--they AREN'T "childhood friends who grew up together," they're SIBLINGS.

And it's the fact that the people I see shipping this pair miss that or ignore it completely that makes me lose a bit of respect for them as a writer. If someone ships them or writes about them romantically... while TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THEIR ESTABLISHED DYNAMIC... then that's great, and more power to them. My hat goes off to the fan who does that.

Unfortunately, I don't SEE any of that. And that's what the secret was about.

Secondly... well, I'm a bit new to this community, so forgive me if I've missed something, but what's the big hubbub over "lose respect" in a secret? It's not like I'm saying I suddenly hate someone's very existence, I just lose a little faith in their ability as a writer if they take such a cop-out (or don't see it at all). I admit to being a bit puzzled over the backlash, and some clarification would be appreciated :/

Re: 21 OP here...

[identity profile] uncreativity.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, CFTF #21, we know you OTP Franziska/Adrian, and there's nothing wrong with that. But to pretend that you can take Franziska's one, off-handed, highly-up-to-interpretation, most-likely joking comment about him being her little brother as CONCRETE EVIDENCE THAT THEY WERE DEFINITELY RAISED AS SIBLINGS? That's reaching. There's no solid canon as to the nature of their relationship. Miles and Manfred could've been off in America practically the whole time she was sitting in Germany, for all you know. Is the familial interpretation a completely valid one? Yes. But that's the way that YOU see them; it's not canon.

I don't ship Franziska/Edgeworth, either, but get a clue. It's not incest no matter how much you want it to be.
