Shit Stream 62: Eastern Arts White boys

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2014-09-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I redeem myself for last weeks lack of stream!!

The ancient martial arts of the east. Their true masters can do truly amazing things with them! Their true masters, of course, being white guys!

First, the glorious B-actor Richard Harrison is Gordon, the white ninja. His master, a white ninja, is murdered by the black ninja (who is white). Only an unrealted splicted in asain movie can flesh this out enough to have a plot! NINJA STRIKE WARRIORS!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXHWzy0RcBw

Then... The Yakuza have moved to america! Only a martial arts master who is called a Samurai by people who have no idea what a Samurai is can stop them! A white master! A movie oddly obsessed with men's penis sizes (especially black ones), SAMURAI COP!

One time a friend posted a depressing fanfic to her LJ; it confused me a bit because that wasn't like her. The next day she posted saying she was so sorry, but someone had posted something weird to her LJ. So of course I said something like "oh, that's what that really emo fic was!"

... it wasn't what she'd been talking about. Yeah, I still feel a bit bad about that.

Is this attitude racist or xenophobic?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping people don't dismiss this immediately when they see it has to do with race - I know we had a lot of racial wank threads started fairly recently.

I have someone who I'm friends with on Facebook, and lately, he's started posting a lot of stuff about how "all groups are allowed to love their race/be proud of their race, except for white people!" Or sometimes, replace "white people" with "native [of European country]."

He also posted a rant about how people think it's okay for any other group of people to forbid marrying outside the race/group/tribe/etc. but people would call him racist if he said the same thing. Apparently marrying outside his ethnicity (so I guess not only do they have to be white, but a native of his country, whose ancestors were all from his country) would be against his religious beliefs.

And of course, immigration is wrong.

But he insists he doesn't see any race as better than the others. He just thinks they should all stick to their own countries and not marry outside their own ethnic groups.

So now I'm unsure if this type of opinion is racist. Usually the people who are against immigration and interracial marriage are, but is it still racist if you don't see one race as superior or inferior?

This is the type of memes that he keeps reposting:

That one episode

(Anonymous) 2014-09-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So a lot of shows do their take on a certain episode/story, and I can't help compare them. What are certain forms you've seen on multiple shows/etc? Like:

-The 'trapped in a bank during a holdup' episode (mostly on police procedurals. I liked Sanctuary's take best for its aversion of the trope)

-the fight club episode (I have a soft spot for Voyager's version)

-the time loop episode (a sci-fi must. None has slain me like SG-1's)

-the 'pretend to be a couple' episode (Scarecrow and Mrs King is my fave)

-the body-swap episode (like every sci-fi show ever. If Quantum Leap counts I like that best)

Funerals and awkwardness

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-09-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I've been invited to a funeral tomorrow (does on say invited, even?)

In any case - I did not know him that well. But, he was always nice to me. We're in this club together and I organize bi-monthly dinners for that group. I was actually wondering why I hadn't seen him for a while. I know his wife, somewhat, but not the rest of the family.

He was always nice to me and really appreciated me volunteering for organizing activities - even gave me a birthday present I really did not expect last year.

I'm debating whether to go or not. I mean, I can - I do not need to work that day and I sort of feel it would be nice to honor him (and to find out what the hell happened to him).

But then, I won't know anyone there, it might be really awkward, and there will be a lot of people who he'll have meant more to than to me.

I dunno, folks - should I go?

Also, depressingly, this is the sixth person I know who died this year.

NaNoWriMo Prep

[personal profile] dancing_clown 2014-09-16 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got my email that was all "Yo! NaNoWriMo is almost here: Get ready!" and it got me curious how many people here are planning to do it, how many aren't, and how many are just sick to death of hearing about it already.

Also, the people who are doing it, what's your prep method? Either in terms of story or time.

My story prep is always hit or miss, but I get very CLEAN ALL THE THINGS before NaNo. Mainly because I'm sort of a weird paradox that LOVES a nice clean home and workspace, but I'm the sloppiest person to ever slop, and I rarely notice just how filthy things have gotten until I look around at the mess and lose the will to live, let alone clean, or especially write. So I kind of ease into housework during September and set aside some time in October to, well, clean all the things.

And I always *say* I'm going to do a ton of advance cooking, but I never do.

So both, Robin Thicke and Pharell Williams admitted that Williams was the solo writer of Blurred Lines. And even though Williams SAID he was the writer (and that Thicke contributed very little) the idiotic parts of the internet refuse to believe it. Because how can the awesome Pharell Williams (who was so amazing in the Daft Punk song) be the writer. Fantastic.

When I was too young to really understand the full scope of political implications, I told my friend's really liberal, pro-Gore friend that my dad voted for Bush. Pretty sure that's why our parents never became friends.

(I later learned it wasn't true. I just knew he hadn't voted for Al Gore.)

Drunks

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Can I just say I really, really, really hate older drunk people? Especially men? SO freaking loud, overbearing, and in-your-face. Especially if they were somewhat overbearing to begin with, and the drunkenness just magnifies it.

Memorable Cleverbot Conversations

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
So I got bored one night and tried to smut with Cleverbot for shits and giggles.

"
SEX.
What is your favorite animal?
*facepalm*.
What's wrong? Don't hurt yourself!
...I like it better when YOU hurt me ;).
Do you like Transformers?"

Um....not a success. Anyone else have some funny stories?

Hair woe

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I love the way short hair (up off the neck, over the ears pixie-like short) feels, I just hate the way it looks on me, 90 percent of the time. My hair *just* got long enough that I can pull it all back into a high pony tail to get it all of my neck and not dangling in my eyes. It also looks pretty bad, but at least I can feel good in my own home.

Ugh, I just hate hanging hair. But because haircuts are always anxiety-fuelled messes for me, I end up just letting my short cut grow (which actually got a compliment the other day, which surprised me. The back is about shoulder length. The front and sides are chin length, and just UGH. Hate it.

I swear, if I weren't such a cow for whom it would absolutely look awful -- as opposed to "on a rare good day, maybe I can make this work" short -- I'd just pull a Britney and shave my goddamn head down to buzzy stubble.

I just need to go visit that "fat girls, short hair" tumblr again, I think.

Youtuber whose username I can't remember

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I don't watch a lot of Youtube original content, and I can't remember how I found her videos. She was German and a teacher (high school?). She built a TARDIS in her garden and I think she had chickens. Does anyone know who I am talking about?
