I will never understand why fanfic writers taking their fics down is apparently somewhere on the same moral level as drowning kittens.

If I want to take a fic down, I'll take it down.

If it makes you feel better, I felt OMG embarrassed about my thesis for a few years, but with a longer distance from it I can be satisfied that it wasn't *good* but wasn't *terrible* either. Your fics are probably fine and keeping people happy :)

Thank you for keeping them up! Someone may rec them somewhere in the future, return to them, see a mention on tumblr and want to check them out, etc.

Don't feel embarrassed about sharing something creative. Even if you think you could have done better, you contributed to a fandom!

I had the opposite experience. I haven't written fanfic in a long time, been too focused on original stuff. Well, I went back recently and read a couple fics I had written six, seven years ago.

They were better than my today writing. I actually thought they were good. I was mad that the WIPs had never been finished. Lots of good feelings that I managed all of this, mixed with the bad feeling that somehow I became a much crappier writer.

Good for you, OP! Sticking to something you believe in even when it's unpleasant for you is a test of character.

I was about to hit post when I realized that might sound sarcastic. It's not. I honestly believe that your actions re: your old fic are morally good.

If people are still reading them now, it's because they really like them. Just keep that in mind every time it troubles you.

Ha I feel you OP. Some of my older fic makes me cringe but I know how disappointed I've felt when I've found a link to an old fic only to discover that's it's been deleted/locked. So no matter my mixed feelings on my old fic I keep it online because hey, someone might get a kick out of it.

I always wonder how people who think authors have the right to take back their works would feel if out became a thing for published works to be recalled. Or how they feel about publishers reacting ebooks. "Oh but that's different! People paid for those books!" Oh, alright. So an authors right to do what they want only lasts until she sells it? Okay.
What about books that are given away? Does an author have the right to take those back?

Yes, you have every right to take down your fics. Yes, people should probably save their favorite fics. But as someone that has lost old fics (due to computer crashes and once a computer crash AND external hard drive crash within a week of each other) no longer available online, I just have to say:

I completely understand the feeling of this. Some of my old stuff isn't exactly *horrible* per se, just mind numbingly boring (to me), but I still receive comments on them, so they stay.

On the one hand, I feel a bit bad for the OP, because this thread definitely got derailed.

On the other hand, it was a genuinely interesting read. Both "sides"/perspectives on saving fic have a point.

This secret is my life. Thanks to you and many of the comments, I feel more relieved about my fanfics. Like, they are no very good. They are even crap, but that's cool. A lot of fics are crap and people doesn't really care. I don't have to care. And I should respect and appreciate every time I get a favorite, instead of cringe. I'll write better and don't have to pretend I've always written well.

Whatever your choice will be, I hope you find peace about it, OP.
