A non magic HP AU set in a private high school of some sort. Try to find a way to translate as many of the canon plot elements in some way into the fic. Be clever, be resourceful, be creative. I'll even get you started. Dark wizard? How about serial killer? Or cult leader? Maybe a retired FBI/detective Dumbledore who worked on Riddle's case. Could be a fun subplot.

Weird food thread

Okay, f!s I'm hungry.

I'm making dinner soon, but while that's happening tell me about the strangest thing you've ever eaten. It might not even be something people traditionally consider edible (e.g. dirt, paper).

For me, the strangest thing would probably be venom. I have had royal jelly (which contained a small amount of bee venom) as well as ice cream that contained rattlesnake venom. They tasted very distinct: acrid, vaguely metallic, with notes of ammonia and bitter compounds and a brief tingling/burning sensation on the tongue.

So what's the most unusual thing you have ever consumed?

I'm beginning to think that tropes in general, much like the Bechdel Test are utterly worthless for anything other than analyzing trends in fiction. By themselves, they aren't a symbol of a story's worth or value, beyond the individual consumer's feeling about the trope, and they certainly are useless for divining the unsaid intent of the creators.

Take, for instance, Supernatural. I just can't get down with "you're queerbaiting us with all these romantic tropes" as a reason to castigate the show. I mean, look at TVTropes for tropes of love. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LoveTropes).

There's a trope for medical attention. There's a trope for coming out of your shell in a strenuous situation with another person. There's one for being angry and worried over reckless behavior. These and many of the others are not situations that are unique to romantic relationships.

And I get the desire, 100 percent, for representation and validation, but if the majority of proof for baiting is "look at all these other shows that turned this situation into romance," that's not really much proof at all. If anything, that's Supernatural *inverting* tropes, and isn't that supposed to be the holy grail of modern armchair critics?

And if the rest of your proof for baiting is "I acted just like Dean, and I'M not straight!" ... well, good for you. You do not represent the whole world. Like I said, I get the desire for representation, but what you want, then, is a new show. Not an old one that's said "this pairing you want will never happen, because these characters are just close friends." And if you can't enjoy this one for what it is but can only hate it for what it isn't, stop fucking watching.

My son just forced me to watch this (I'm very much not a Tom Cruise fan, I generally don't care for the whole space marines vs aliens thing, or "gimmick" plots) but... damn I was impressed with pretty much every aspect of it. Even the freaking soundtrack.

Writer's block... it's been over a year

I can only write when I'm connected to my dark side (sadness, depression, anger, perversion, etc.). I feel like I cannot create anymore. It's really upsetting when I think about how I might have lost that ability.

Any tips? What do I do?
