so a long time back in a recs thread here in GC I asked for some book recs, and got a lovely list. didn't get around to finding most of them until now (life, shitty library system, etc) so I'm finally reading some of them.

and wow, I have never stopped reading a book 7 chapters in but holy shit this book is dull as fuck. I'm sorry to whatever anon deep in the mists of time recommended it to me, but it's not a good rec.

so what things (books, series, movies, games) have you tried from a rec only to get sorely burned?

I've been watching some yugioh recently and noticed there's some fans on FS. I was wondering if you guys could answer a question about the effects of Duel Monsters cards -- like, what exactly are they? Do they have physical effects or don't they? It's really hard to tell sometimes.

They're boring. They're useless to the plot. This isn't the character being bad ("I'm going to blow up this bus full of orphaned nuns!") but the writer being bad.

Bonus point is this character is from an otherwise good cast of characters.

A question about periods and painkillers

Despite taking the pill I get really bad cramps at the beginning of my period. I usually try to ride them out but today I really needed to not be in pain for A Thing so I took painkillers (ibuprofen 400). The pain set in in the early afternoon but because the Thing started in the evening I waited until 5pm, when I was already I pain but it hadn't peaked yet, to take the painkiller. Everything was fine until the ibuprofen wore off, now it hurts even more than before. I had to take another to have any kind of hope of getting some sleep tonight.

My cramps usually last only about five to six hours since I've been on the pill so they really should have been over by now, but it feels as though all the painkillers did was pause the cramps for a couple of hours. I'm pretty sure that's not how painkillers work, right? Shouldn't whatever causes/stops the pain be independent of the painkillers? Why does it still hurt?

This is the first time that I've taken painkillers for my cramps since I got on the pill. One big reason for getting the pill was so I wouldn't have to take painkillers through my period anyone in the first place.

Is self-diagnosis possible?

I think I have depression. I'm pretty sure, if I went to a doctor and told them my symptoms, they would say I have depression. However, I never have...no money for it. I've heard people say self-diagnosis is unreliable since mentally ill people aren't "aware of their illness", most often related to autism but other mental illnesses as well. What do you think?

Alternatives to iron supplements?

I'm a vegetarian. I've never had blood tests, but I've tried to go give blood several times, and my iron levels are always way too low, so I want to try upping them and maybe see if I feel better and more active.

The iron pills make me feel like crap. Even when I take them with food. I have horrible nausea and really bad cramps. They're over the counter supplements. Any alternative recommendations for iron-low people?

Running away to California

Pros: I have several family members out West who love and support me. I can finish college and get a job anywhere in the US. The climate/weather does wonders for my health and mood. Staying where I am fills me with fear and dread and apathy. I'd be much closer to my aging grandmother.

Cons: I start my senior year of college tomorrow, and we've already paid them some non-refundable money. I'm getting low on petty cash, but have enough for a one-way ticket. I'd have to leave in secret in the early hours so my family doesn't find out I left until it's too late. My California family doesn't know I'm planning this.

What should I do?
