What media did you instantly regret spending money on?

Games, movies, books, whatever.

...I was going to make this exact thread, mind reading anon.

I once bought a book by an author I really liked only to get home and find out it was a novel written in verse. I also have quite a few video games I never actually play, but I buy everything used so I don't lose too much money there.

I bought Papers, Please because I heard it was good. I could not make it trough the tutorial because I found it so boring.

Saw Snow White and the Huntsmen in the theaters. Ended up walking out because it was so terrible.

I'm actually playing that right now and love it, but I can definitely see how it might bore some people.

Definitely a bunch of books I buy because I think they sound interesting and then I just don't care for the author's style.

I'm usually pretty good about finding sales on movies though and I use the library for a lot of books so it doesn't happen that often.

I do end up buying random things that I wonder why I bought them, like my Doctor Who Funko Pops or a bunch of other collectibles I have.

I always worry that I'll regret spending money on collectibles that I end up being super stingy about them. As a result, though, I've regretted surprisingly few.
The downside - sometimes I sort of regret NOT having bought something when I had the chance...

You sound like me. Luckily I can often get them cheap because I live in a place with a lot of inexpensive second hand bookstores.

I bought the Warcraft Arthas book for my bf's birthday one year because Arthas is his fave character... it was not worth it. The book annoyed my bf and I couldn't stop laughing while reading it, it was so bad.

I regret buying a Warhammer 40k book about Eldar, it's just so godawful and isn't even accurate to what Eldar are like in the game itself. It's the one book I never finished because I just couldn't bear to keep reading it.

And I regret going to see Prometheus and Godzilla 2014, both movies annoyed me and while I saw Godzilla for free with a gift voucher it was a waste of the money on that voucher.

I saw Prometheus opening night, so I feel you there.

At least I found it somewhat funny (actually started laughing in the theatre at several scenes), or I probably would have been a lot less happy about buying the ticket.

Which 40K book, so I know what to avoid?

(not that I read anything other than Gaunt's Ghosts and Ciaphas Cain anyway)

A few of the scenes in Godzilla were so well shot (e.g. the halo jump with flares) that they were almost worth the price of entry. The rest was garbage, though, yeah.

And Prometheus. Woof. Saw that opening night in IMAX I was so hype. So much regret.

I recently bought the Sims 2. I haven't played yet. It doesn't seem to work right on my computer.

The only game I've actually gotten mad about playing in the last several years was The Last Of Us, but ...we took that out from the library rather than spending money on it.

However, I can honestly say that I would be PISSED if we had spent any money on it.

Vaguely unhappy I paid $90 for Fallout 4 though. Not worth that price tag.

Divergent, and Name of the Wind. Rage at both those books.

Anything by Amy Lane. Not only is her writing godawful, turns out she's also a massive racist and genuinely terrible human being.

I bought Brink a few years back. No subtitles, no playerbase, half-formed gameplay -- waste of money :/

Diablo III. Only bought it to beat the campaign once with friends, went to a physical store to buy a physical disc and everything so I could give it to a friend when I was done.

HAHAH FUCK YOU PEASANT IT'S TIED TO YOUR BATTLE.NET ACCOUNT AND THE PHYSICAL DISC WAS JUST AN ACCESS CODE GET REKT.

Ok then I'll stay a console peasant, Blizzard. Eat a dick and lose my dollars forever. I can still lend my console discs to people and they can still play them, you shitlord.

So yeah $60 (plus expansion) for like 10 hours of gameplay because I don't farm.

Pretty much every time I've gone to see a movie in theater in the last five years or so. The experience is never worth the money. Don't know why I keep hoping it'll be worth it.

John Mayer. I like one of his singles and figured, what the heck I'll get his CD. It was garbage.

Inception. I liked it the first time I saw it in theaters. So I got the DVD. No rewatch value. The story was dead to me.

Cops 2170 was an unadulterated piece of shit. http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/cops-2170-the-power-of-law I also lasted about three minutes into Forever Worlds: http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/forever-worlds---enter-the-unknown

I saw The Last Airbender in a theater. :/

Pokemon Art Academy for 3DS. I was drawing a circle, but it was making this weird broken, jagged oval no matter how many times I did it or altered the angle of the stylus. I got too annoyed and never played it again.

Honestly, not much; I spend so little that I pretty much am guaranteed to only get stuff I like.

That said, I recently bought a book called 'Bears on Bears' from my used bookstore. Wow, was that a load of REALLY tedious pomo queer theory. I had to quit it and donate it pretty quick in--I only got it for the interview with Tim Barela anyway. (He was the creator of Leonard and Larry, one of my favorite old gay comics.)

Mass Effect. Not instantly, I played for 30 hours and nothing caught my interest other than slight amusement at the elevator ads in...whatever it was. The Citadel?

Every European release of a Bethesda produced game ever. Because they don't include the orihinal English language versions on the general European disc and if you want it, you have to import the UK release. And I refuse to play my country's terrible dub version. (Also, I have my Playstation set to English and if you do this, the games auto-install in fucking French.)
