Sometimes it can be hard to reconcile whether the parts you like/dislike of something are enough to make you like/dislike the whole. So let's talk about some examples here.

Hobbit movies for me. And I've switched sides. When I first saw them, I thought I liked them in spite of all the bits I didn't like. Now I'm in the camp where I don't like them in spite of the few bits that I do like.

Harry Potter can be that way for me sometimes. Mostly the movies, but also the books.

I've started reading the HP fic "Amends, or Truth and Reconciliation" (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5537755/1/Amends-or-Truth-and-Reconciliation), I'm a little conflicted, but leaning toward liking it.

I love the idea -- it's a Hermione-centric story about the post-war time being pretty much complete shit for a lot of people, and the writing is good enough, though it doesn't go back and forth between 3rd person and 1st-person journal entries with the ease other stories have.

But it's painfully clear the other hates Ron and Molly (and probably Fred and George). But at least her characterization of Molly has a basis in canon, whereas she pretty much ignores all the progress Ron made as a human being in book 7. Now he's all "make your yourself (get me off)" and Mr. Put-Down Jealousy type.

And it's clearly headed for Neville/Hermione (with the possibility of a left turn into Draco/Neville/Hermione), and it's done sweetly, but there's also really obvious and there' something...on the nose about the way the fic treats the PTSD that's going around after all the events of the books.

So IDK what I think yet. But then, I'm only on Chapter 20 of 69.

Christianity. I consider myself a Christian (acknowledging the many varieties and beliefs that word has included over the centuries, not all of which could possibly apply), but I sometimes take issue with certain beliefs, adherents, things advocated or hated, etc., that have been or sometimes are associated with Christianity.

For a religion with so much possibility for comfort, peace, love, and promoting brotherhood, justice, and love...sometimes it or aspects of it or its devotees falls so far short.

Despite everything, I believe in the good things, I try to do good works and help people, I am proud of those in many countries (including my own) who manage to work for good things, show love and not hate, etc., but sometimes I am ashamed of other things Christians have done (or not done).

I think it's very wrong when any of us put a political belief or a nationalistic belief above the religious elements, the elements of finding loving and showing love. I think it's a shame. (And I do have some political beliefs of my own, and probably nationalistic ones.)

I think it's beautiful that Christianity gave hope to so many people through so many years, and I hope it continues to do so...but I know it's caused a lot of pain, too...

Rey being a Skywalker. On the one hand, I like that the main SW series is about the Skywalker family. I would be interested in seeing other parts of the universe but there are books, TV shows, and now anthology movies for that. I want the main movies to be about the Skywalkers. But, Ren is a Skywalker so that should qualify. But, I want the Skywalkers to be good guys so unless he gets a redemption arc, then I'd want Rey to be Luke's kid.

However, it would also be nice if she was just a random person who was strong with the force. I kind of like Ren and Rey as a couple, which wouldn't go down if they were related (but would definitely fit the incestuous Skywalker legacy ;) But I also saw definite seeds of Rey and Finn, so it would be cool if Ren and Rey were cousins. I just like connections.

Also, I'm of two minds about Ren's arc. On the one hand, I want him to be redeemed for Leia's sake and because it feels like his arc is set up so well for him to be redeemed. But, on the other hand, it's set up too well and it's almost too obvious. I'd actually like to see him fully embrace the Dark Side and be just awful. No more emo shit, just pure evil. I think that would be fun. So, I'm not sure how I want it to go in the end.

Let's get political

I'm big on separation of powers in politics. In the U.S., one of the most important points of separation that has developed is between Congress, which creates laws, and the courts, which interpret and evaluate laws. It's a common refrain that some new court decision is effectively "creating new law," interpreting existing laws in unorthodox ways that should have come through Congress instead, and I can sympathize with that to some extent. There are times when I myself think the Supreme Court is reaching.

At the same time, it must be acknowledged that reinterpretations are often for the benefit of groups that were ignored or left out when the laws were first written. In practice, "I'm against judicial overreach" is often a code phrase for "I'm against giving protections to [insert minority group here]." It's not always possible to get protections passed via Congress, and I'm not going to begrudge disadvantaged people whatever opportunities they're given to level the playing field.

I get angry when court interpretations are used to further disadvantage minorities, and I don't want to say "it's only okay when we do it." I'm not sure where that leaves me. Maybe the best I can say is that it's good for these things to go through Congress, while acknowledging that it's not always possible.

This happens to me all the time with books/TV shows. There'll be something that really bothers me in something I otherwise really like, and I really have to weigh whether or not the good points are enough to overcome the bad.

The most recent example is from A Superior Death by Nevada Barr. There's a 40 something character who rapes a 12 year old girl, and attempts to rape a 13 year old girl. Both times he was described as "having an affair" with the girl and other characters reacted as if he was caught having an ACTUAL affair with a consenting adult, making jokes and just overall making light of the situation, which really, really pissed me off. ADULTS DO NOT HAVE "AFFAIRS" WITH CHILDREN, GODDAMMIT.

Now, other than that I've really enjoyed the books (it's a series) but I'm really not sure whether I want to continue after that.

Hamilton. I think the music and lyrics are fun and great and all. But I simply can't get over the main character's/writer's voice. I keep finding my way back to the songs now and then and try listening to it, try liking it. And I always stop because I just can't stand the guy's voice and way of singing/speaking/rapping/etc.

You know, have you ever had THAT minor character - a character who doesn't have much canon info, who only shows up for a couple scenes or only has a few lines, and who doesn't really do anything of much importance, but who, for some reason, you just really loved and/or looked up tons of fanfic for?

The villain of the original Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha. I fucking loved that character and so did a tiny handful of other people, even though they were barely in the game. There was so much potential based on what little information we did get about them.

General Hux. There are bits of his character I think can be seen from canon, but it isn't a lot.


And Celebrimbor is probably my favorite Tolkien character even though there are only some bits to his character and story and a whole lot we don't know.

A lot of Harry Potter minor characters were more interesting to me. The teachers were great, especially McGonagall. Does Neville count as a minor character?

Tumblr Venting

It's super irritating when you're a fan content creator on tumblr and all your content only gets likes and hardly any reblogs. A bunch of likes, sure, but reblogs are few and far between.

Idk, I take likes as "it's ok but not good enough to show my friends." What did I do wrong? Why don't you like it enough to reblog it? I want to make more content for you, fellow fans, but it's really hard with under 100 followers (and bad self-esteem).

It feels like Christmas when a really popular blog reblogs something of mine and I get like 5x the amount of notes I would have normally gotten without their help.
