games advice plz

(Anonymous) 2016-09-04 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)

Question(S) regarding Dragon Age: Inquisition and Mass Effect 1-3.

I would love to try playing these games but I have no interest in the romance aspects of them.
And if it affects the story in a big way like I've heard, then I'm not sure I'm ready to invest so much time and money (!!!) in them.

1. Will I be able to complete them 100% without opting for romance? (Meaning, am I missing something if I don't do the thing?)

Also, it irks me that you can't romance who you want in ME, and it's my understanding that certain romance options are only available to one sex, not both.
In case I do change my mind and want to romance someone that isn't available to my player character,

2. are there mods that can fix this?

3. Do I need to play previous Dragon Age games to be able to enjoy Inquisition?

Because I tried the first game and it sucked so I quit a few hours in. Don't plan to continue, either.
I've played a few hours of ME3, and I could end up loving it. I also tried ME1 but it was pretty awful... However, for the sake of the sequels, I'm willing to play it through.

4. OR, if there's a mod that allows me to skip the first ME game completely (with 100% completion status), that would be appreciated.

5. But if there's a reason why I absolutely shouldn't skip the first ME game, I'm all ears. I'm ok with spoilers.

OK OK OK LAST QUESTION.

6. How would you rank Dragon Age: Inquisition, Witcher 3 and Skyrim? All of them worth playing, too similar, one is clearly superior etc etc?

I can answer about Dragon Age.
1. Yes. Obviously you won't get the romance subplots, but you won't miss the main plot at all, and you can develop close friendships with all the characters so you can still enjoy the superb characterization/relationship-building of the game.

2. Yes, you can download sex-restriction elimination mods. For what it's worth, Dragon Age 2 went the "everyone's bisexual" route, which I preferred, too.

3. No, but you miss a lot of background and lots of the game won't impact you as much without knowing the previous storylines. Still, it's its own story with its own cast. If you hated the first one, though, I'm not sure why you want to play this one. Dragon Age 2 and 3 have certainly made the series come into its own rather than be generic Tolkien-esque fantasy, but the same themes and plot points carry through, not to mention, the characters are written by the same artistic talent.

6. They're all different games. Skyrim is an open-world sandbox, and frankly, I don't know anyone who plays Skyrim for the story. It's excellent for immersing yourself as a hero in a rich fantasy land where you can do almost anything, but there aren't going to be any memorable characters or plot or anything. Dragon Age Inquisition is very plot-centric, while you still have massive worlds to explore, it's not a sandbox.

Can't speak to DAI other than it's taken some obvious visual inspiration from Dark souls.

Witcher lost me with the rampant sexism.

Skyrim is the only Elder Scrolls game worth playing.

They're all fairly different from one another.

I played just ME3 and enjoyed it well enough. I tried to play me1 and didn't enjoy it.

I don't think romance was necessary to the plot.

Dunno about ME but DAI has romance everyone mods. I used it.

I don't think you need to play the others to play DAI. Granted I have not finished DAI but I'm not paid enough attention to the world building to notice how it connects or not to previous games.

I prefer skyrim over DAI. I'm not really enjoying DAI and stopped playing. Maybe if I change the mode to be more story and less grinding. Haven't played witcher.

1. Romance is optional, you can go through the games without knocking boots with anyone and not miss out on the story. You'll miss out seeing romantic moments with these characters, but you can still be close as friends.

A fair warning though - the first two ME games (and DA:O if you ever decide to check that out) have a ninja romance problem. Basically, if a character can be romanced then "I politely agree" = "I want into your pants". It's really annoying if you just want to be sympathetic and suddenly someone accuses you of cheating. Or you get the pre-final mission sex scene without knowing you'd been flirting in the first place.

2. There's mods for Dragon Age. For Mass Effect you can download a save editor and flip some flags. Just ignore the wrong pronouns and occasional weird clipping that result.

3. Not really. The game has an extensive codex that well explains the lore and gives brief summaries of the previous heroes actions. Speaking of whom, the Keep where you can edit their adventures is open to all even if you don't have the previous games.

You will miss out on all the fuzzy "hey it's that guy!" moments whenever you meet them or they get mentioned in text, but it's not that big a loss. I do recommend checking out the games if Inquisition gets you interested in them though.

4. Look up masseffectsaves.com - it's a database where people upload their save games for others to download. Sorted by gender -> alignment -> LI (including no romance), with all important decisions noted. You can just pick one and plug it into ME2.

5. Personally I liked ME1 the best, but that's my opinion and yours is yours. The thing about ME is that it's different chapters of one characters story, unlike DA where you start fresh every game. So when characters start talking about the things you've done when you've no idea what they're talking about, it's a little disorienting. Also, you form relationships with characters in the first game and that too can get confusing when you meet them in later games and you've no idea why you should like/hate them.

6. I've never played Witcher and Skyrim bored me. But other people like them, so I guess they're not too bad.

Todd in the Shadows

(Anonymous) 2016-09-04 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Recently found his videos on YouTube. I stumbled across his One Hit Wonderland series, and I've expanded out to his song reviews.

Anyone else a fan of Todd? Not where else I could share my fandom. (Other than the comments section on his videos, and that doesn't really seem like the right place.)

The burning of the comic industry

(Anonymous) 2016-09-04 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
SO what do the other comic readers here on F!S think about the latest storm in a teacup over comics? I speak of course about Bendis's blaming the failure of Nighthawk on people not pre-ordering and various sites firing back that a requirement to pre-order in order to ensure success is both a mark of a broken industry and a ludicrous requirement to demand. Do you fall on the side of the comics industry being broken, or on the side of comics needing readers to take a chance on something new and pre-order in good faith?

Personally I'm on the let it burn side, too many sleazy comic shops, too many confusing numbering systems, too many cancellations on incomplete stories (fuck you, whoever was in charge of cancelling and writing JL3001), and too many poor descriptions of what the comics are about to make pre-ordering worth it. The comics industry needs to get out of the diamond market rut, and really innovate, if it wants to deserve to survive.

never revisit your youth

(Anonymous) 2016-09-04 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I found some old VHS cassettes with episodes of The Word and James Whale Late Night TV Show back from the 90s on them in the attic and watched them. Boy did those shows suck. I cannot believe I ever thought they were cool.

Looking for a Sci-Fi Novel

(Anonymous) 2016-09-04 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Might be a Silverberg work, maybe.

I can remember it involves sleeperships and a guy who doesn't go into cryosleep but does become really long lived and gets super large nose and ears for some reason. I remember that for some reason Earth is totally forgot about and abandoned, and at one point a couple of teenagers unwittingly end up on Earth without knowing what planet it is, and they eat snails which they think are some sort of berry.

Anyone help?

I've just started watching! I'm up to episode 5 tonight. I am enjoying? End of episode 3 had me cry.

The Barb/Nancy stuff is not yet in context for me. Or I'm not reading it the same way.

How about you? Have you started watching?

I really like Joyce and El.
