Review/Analysis of Poirot's "The Plymoth Express"

Poirot is hired to assess a man's character, then gets involved in a murder case anyway. Though I guess we shouldn't be surprised by this.

Inspired by 7 - What types of book endings make you furious?

1) It was all a dream.
2) Deus ex machina quick-fix.
3) Random last-minute couples to making things that had no previous real romantic hints have a "happy ending". Bah, and humbug.

Suddenly pulling out a moral that has fuck-all to do with what came before. For instance, I sometimes see books pull out a religious message after going through the entire story without ever mentioning religion.

There was one book, I can't remember the name for the LIFE of me, where for the whole book there was the buildup for a gay couple, they got together, and then the epilogue is one of the guys and his wife.

Out of nowhere.

Out of flipping nowhere.

I'm not sure she was even a character before the epilogue nowhere.

Total destruction. I read a 10,000 page novel (literally) about a fictional town. It's a family saga spanning 400 years. In the end, the town is destroyed during a hurricane. WTF.

Then again, it's still one of my favorites. But... why?

Babies. I love kids. I have a kid! But not everybody wants a kid and there's no reason to show it every damn time anyway. If it's well-established that it's something they want then it doesn't bother me as much.

(See: J K Rowling and a huge number of Regency romance novels. Also The Hunger Games, although that had other specifics that made it especially aggravating.)

Does changing a character's sexuality/sexual habits make a fic OOC (or AU)?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-02 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
This is late so I'm not sure how many people will see it, but anyway.

Obviously there's a lot of people assuming characters are straight because they've only had relationships with the opposite sex in canon, even though they could always be bi, but I'm talking about instances where there it's actually been specifically stated that the character is straight. Would making said character gay in a fic mean it's OOC or that it should be considered an AU?

Or what about making a character that's bi in canon completely gay in a fic? (Or straight, I suppose, but that has unfortunate implications.)

Or how about making a character who, in the canon, has sex with a ton of different people (or is just really enthusiastic about how much they like sex) asexual? Or vice versa (although admittedly characters who are asexual, or could be interpreted that way, are much rarer)?

Or, in the rare case that it would actually come up in a canon, how about making a character who's said that they're either very vanilla or very kinky the opposite?

I frequently find myself wanting to write fic where characters' sexuality is vastly different than it is in canon, but I never do because I'm afraid there will be a bunch of comments like "OMG this is so OOC!" because a character's sexuality is different than what it is in canon. I think labeling it AU fixes that, but is it really AU if everything else is the same as in the canon except this one thing?

I don't know. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Really small advice, please

(Anonymous) 2017-10-02 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
You know how when you're really, really drawn to a stranger? Like maybe they're famous or a BNF or just not in your social circle, and based on what tidbits you know about them, you feel like you want to be friends with them more than anything else in the world? That's what I'm suffering from right now. I'm extremely attracted to a famous person (but in a platonic way) and I feel like I'm just dying to be close to them. (Don't worry, I haven't sent any creepy letters or anything.) How do I get over it and just be a normal fan?

Book club - Sanctuary DISCUSSION

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-10-01 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey all - sorry it took so long for me to get this up! I was thinking about it earlier this afternoon but then I got distracted D:

I don't think it will take me long to compose my thoughts on Sanctuary, being that it was more of a novella than a novel; my thoughts will be in a comment to this post - in the mean time feel free to share yours! :)

Re: Book club - Sanctuary DISCUSSION

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-10-01 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
In hindsight, I didn't realize the book was so short, and a novella is not as well-suited to book club as a novel. It took me only about an hour to read it, and since there wasn't as much content, I won't have as much to say.

That said, I did enjoy it. It was a very sweet story with a very sweet ending, and I found I really liked the author's voice and mode of storytelling, which seemed somewhat unique. Mostly I shipped the hell out of Lapine and Renarda and I particularly enjoyed the chase scene where they met. That was very compelling and easy for me to imagine.

As far as the story is an allegory for other things...I'm not great at abstract analysis, but the parallel between the owl and authoritarian political figures IRL was obvious. It sort of amazes me that this was written as long ago as it was, before any of our current political woes (namely the orange oompa loompa). It serves as a warning against the kind of politics that seeks to divide the non-ruling classes, a warning which many even now turn a blind eye to - right-wing politics is so good at pitting races and religious groups against one another; corporate culture thrives on dividing and conquering the working class.

There was also definitely a lot to be said for the references to environmental destruction. I guess the story must have been set somewhat in the future in an alternate reality; it seemed that the forest in which the witch and the owl lived really was the last forest to exist, and what a tragedy that would be. There's not a lot said directly though on the dangers of environmental destruction; that almost seemed to have been taken for granted as part of the backdrop, which is extra sad.

Any additional thoughts on this? Thoughts on the story, the characters, the setting, the relationships, or the writing? I thought it was a cute story for sure. I'd like to read more of Paul Monette's work.

Re: Book club - Sanctuary DISCUSSION

(Anonymous) 2017-10-01 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the one that nominated the book. I didn't realize how short it was. I liked the writing and the plot but feel it would have been much better if it was expanded.

The characters were great; I liked Renarda most. The owl was interesting. His plan would've worked if not for the random magician.

I didn't like the witch's longing for "the other." And the sudden wedding at the end. I get that it's a fairy tale and love just happens but still kinda annoying.

I'll definitely be looking for more books by Monette.
