Is there a difference between liking problematic media where you yourself are a member of the group affected vs. when you're not? Or can you always say "it's just fiction and I recognize it's problematic, therefore I enjoy it shamelessly."

I think so much of it comes down to individual judgment that it's hard to make a hard-and-fast, bright-line rule about when it is, or is not, acceptable.

It's a lot more important to listen to people from the group affected when that's not the group you're in, obviously. But it still comes down to cases.

I don't think there's a difference? Like it depends on the media, if it's trying to make a serious point about a problematic opinion the line gets a little greyer, but when everybody is screaming about how gay a character secretly is, then enjoy away!

I don't know, but I hate that I can't enjoy "problematic" things. As soon as I find out something bad about something/one, no matter how much I try to tell myself that it's not a big deal and it doesn't matter, I just can't enjoy it anymore. It's not intentional, my brain just goes "nope!" and if I try to watch/read/listen to it after I find out the bad thing, I feel like an awful person and eventually have to stop.

I think the number of cases where I think one probably should feel shame for liking a piece of media is really small. Dodgy porn where the producers lied to get consent pops to the top of my head.

I mean, if a person likes H.P. Lovecraft for all the wrong and racist reasons (Bannon apparently is a fan of dystopian brown menace sci-fi), there's probably deeper disagreement than whether they're ashamed of reading Lovecraft. And plenty of people can recognize good points about Lovecraft without handwaving away his problems.

The point of doing feminist or queer reads isn't to create some sort of good and pure alternate canon. It's to examine how ideas about gender and sexuality are expressed through a work. "This is problematic, let's have fun talking about it" is a good response.

Just, why?

I don't care for an over reliance on CGI in general, but for animals, it especially gets to me. They don't move right and they don't look right, to me. If they are briefly in a movie, I can get past it (and I kind of accepted it in Jumanji because, hey, they came out of an evil game), but this is not for me.

And was there really a hankering for another Doctor Dolittle movie?

Also, what the hell is up with that accent?
