Exactly. Though I hate how people even snipe at the fact that POC are cast in side roles (like Beetee and Rue) and it would probably be worse if the lead was a POC, it would have made more sense (do you think it would have not made as much money, F!S? Personally, I just think it's a risk they'd have to take, but I know Lionsgate is primarily about making money).

Wow, really? I didn't know that America had such a high non-white population. I wonder what the UK stats are (where I live)...? It seems like a lot less in my area.

I'm tired of fighting about it too, but honestly, I think even Suzanne Collins didn't think of demographic trends when writing the books. Like, even the last names, when she's not using them to make some weird point (all the Roman names for the Capital folks) and even sometimes when she is (Coin, in fact most of the District 13 people) they're anglicized more often than not. Although who knows what Mellark is supposed to be. Or else whatever the disaster was that killed everyone off took out most of the Southern US/the coasts, and with it most of the diversity. Who the hell knows, with Panem.

If it's not race wank ("too white" and "not white enough"), it's "too pretty" or "not pretty enough" wank. JFC, guys. Get a grip.

I understand the frustration as white a default; but, that's the way of the world. I can't see it changing anytime soon. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be irritated, but getting your hopes up for a sudden paradigm shift in thinking is futile.

I think people give Collins too much credit. She is white and is writing from a place of privilege. There was a very good argument to be made about Katniss's casting, but when a white lady writes a character with tan skin, red hair and green eyes there's a pretty good chance she's not thinking of Central America sorry to say. Especially with a name like Finnick.

Green-eyed redhead are an incredibly INCREDIBLY rare mix. Most people wouldn't believe it because of how saturated the scheme is in the media, but green eyes are in approximately 2% of the population, as is red hair.

Is it theoretically possible? Sure. But I doubt you can find more than ten people on the damn planet that are non-white and green-eyed and redheaded. I've never even met a white green-eyed redhead. Most of the ones you know probably have hazel eyes or dyed red hair.

And, again, the arguments for Katniss being white are much stronger than her being non-white. They're not absolute or irrefutable, but the evidence DOES point to Katniss being white.

I do not think any of that means the characters casted had to be white. But I do think it means people need to take their anger out on some other series.

I've not read the books or seen the movie but I've seen a map of the thing. Doesn't it also include Canada which is 80% white and Mexico Which wikipedia has no info on? Of course it all depends on when whatever fucked up the continent happened in that world.

Although it all really reminds me of every single Sci-fi thing about a space colony where every person in a colony is very obviously one race or another despite being multiple generations down from a base group of people.

I can understand the frustration too, but I'm getting tired of these special snowflakes who, for some reason, work themselves up actually thinking that the casting directors are going to cast EXACTLY who they imagine as the characters, PC skin color and everything.

Then they get depressed and angry when it doesn't happen. Every. Single. Time.

There's being annoyed that the casting doesn't meet your expectations, and then there's being truly shocked every time. One of them is idiotic.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

And personally, I don't see what's wrong with wanting the series (or any series for that matter) to be more like real life. For example, the town I grew up in was a very white town. I knew one black family until I hit high school. Over the past ten years the town has come much more multicultural. Yes, the majority is still white but POC are certainly not uncommon. In another ten years the gap between white and POC will likely lessen.

That's why I have issues with HG (and other series) which try and present a white world. It's unrealistic.

soooooooooooooooooo fuuuuuuuuuuuucking tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiired of this wank

Jesus christ. We get it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I think that when people start throwing racial slurs at one another over the casting of a movie, it's gone too far (not that you do, OP), but I hope that something positive will come out of the endless wank over these movies: even if the casting directors and whatnot don't see it, hopefully writers WILL, and will consider diversifying their characters in the future (with CLEAR, PLAIN descriptions that can't be argued about)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Sigh. Like it or not, neither Suzanne Collins nor anyone else is under any obligation to write what you want to see. Neither is Hollywood obligated to cast what you want to see. They are not under obligation to write heroes of your ethnic background, gender identification, sexual orientation, religious persuasion, or anything else. It sucks, but that's the way it is.

You want more POC / LBGTQ / female / whatever heroes? There's one way to get them. Write them yourself. Dead serious here. It did wonders for my blood pressure and peace of mind when I finally decided that, every time I saw or read a story in which women were treated dismissively, cast as "shallow love interest," or shoe-horned into stereotypical roles, instead of getting pissed off about it, I would sit down and write a story in which the main character and Big Damn Hero was a woman. (It also did wonders for my writing ability.) And god knows the world needs more good fiction with POC / LBGTQ / female heroes. So, yeah. The only one who is guaranteed to create stories you want to see is you.

I'm not in this fandom, but I can understand when you say you're tired of fighting about this, seems like the first reaction to people trying to analyze or show any sort of discomfort over this sort of stuff is to moan about SJW and how they're ruining everything. It's pretty eye roll worthy, honestly.

For what it's worth OP, I think you're right, and my thoughts on this are that not saying anything only keeps the status quo of white being the default, so keep up the good fight.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that it'd be great to see more POC in lead roles. However, this argument becomes so fucking obnoxious when SJWs make it out like the media in question is immoral, racist, and all around horrible for featuring mostly white characters. No matter how much society would benefit from having minorities in Hollywood leads, it's not BAD that Katniss is played by a white actress, etc.

But yeah OP, I agree.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I understand where you're coming from and all that, but does the color of someone's skin white or otherwise make a character more/less relatable? Does it change the actual story at all? Would incorrect racial casting really ruin a book-turned-movie for you even if the adaption was done perfectly otherwise?

Just wondering why people get so uptight over how someone looks. Skin color, hair color, whatever. idgaf. Can they play the character accurately? That's all that matters to me. :\

I want the characters to look as they were described as much as possible. Thus I want a tan-skinned light-eyed girl as Katniss (with a blonde sister and mom), a black girl as Rue, a blond Peeta, an a red haired Finnick.

If you have a real problem with the casting of the movie you need to take the complaint to Collins, who described each of these characters.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
ugh, as a writer I try to be careful to make my characters ethnically diverse to the best of my ability, and threads like this just make me want to say "fuck it" and just make them all white.

Yes, the US is very diverse But no one ever points out that all the cities that have the largest population of diversity were destroyed in the books. NYC? Gone. L.A.? Gone. Miami? Gone. D.C.? Gone. All you have left, for the most part, is middle America, which is vastly white of the German, Scandinavian variety. (Or as Stephen Colbert put it so nicely, "You can't swing a dead cat without someone wanting to pickle it.") The cities, left standing, that would be really diverse would be the ones in the North not quite mid-west region. Like Detroit or Chicago. But the area where Katniss is from? Yes. Not really diverse. You are not going to see many Asians.
