I don't think their relationship was one dimensional and it did grow, but it what's-his-name did rape him at the beginning in typical yaoi trope of "he didn't want it but really he did." Now, I can forgive yaoi tropes a bit, and I take it with a grain of salt because hey, I like yaoi. But if I remember correctly, the other two couples in the series were much more interesting than the "main one" (which, iirc, was the only one with rape). The others, particularly, I think, the second one, was a lot more realistic.

Sorry if I've forgetting something, because I watched the anime years ago.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry OP, but he did rape him. I've read the series and watched it. It was rape, end of story.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like you haven't watched the part where Misaki says he was never actually forced, then. That makes it not rape.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
JR and SH are terrible.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The art is pretty shitty too. Tbh, the author hasn't wrote anything good.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, they're both really great series.

lmao I love this series but yeah, Usagi-san did rape Misaki okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, rape is rape. But in a way I understand the frustration. A lot of yaoi series have been ruined for me in this way because no matter how good the later development is, I can't justify it. It's like Rape Is Love is a requirement for the genre; sometimes it seems the author just felt they had to include it or else it's not yaoi or something.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see it as rape because Misaki himself later in the series says he was never really against it.
Therefore no, I disagree with the Rape is Love mentality entirely.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well then I'm sure that's alright! I mean, the initial representation of the actual incident that left such a virulently negative impression on readers means nothing if the author can later cover their ass and just have the character say he liked it. That's something that's never present in a million yaoi and doesn't feed right into aforementioned trope at all.

rape is rape is rape and nakamura is a bad writer. period. Fujisaki is the only one doing anything interesting with the yokozawa case, but that's like 90% her with nakamura drawing crappy insert images.

you can enjoy fiction with shitty tropes like rape SO LONG AS YOU DO NOT DO WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND DENY THAT IT IS RAPE. Forgiving someone for what they did later or convincing yourself that hey it wasn't rape because you like this person and how could they ever have raped you even though you clearly did NOT want their dick inside you and it hurt and you had barely acknowledged any feelings for them WHEN IT PRETTY CLEARLY WAS RAPE.

google 'being a fan of problematic things' and grow up. Guilty pleasures are fine. it's when you deny that they're something to feel guilty for that you come off like a tween weeaboo yaoi fangirl.

I like reading the takano/ritsu case in sekakoi. but I'll be the first to step up and say "yeah this is rape and it's problematic as shit". ritsu wanting it once or twice doesn't automatically make all the other times NOT rape.

NO MEANS NO AND IF YOU STILL HAVE SEX WITH SOMEONE AFTER THAT IT IS RAPE. PERIOD.

I don't know why it's so hard to understand that this was rape. Yes, the victim may have enjoyed it. He may actually even have wanted to have sex with the other person. But he did not expressly consent at the time, and the other, while knowing consent was not given, went ahead anyway. Even if the victim forgives the rapist, the rapist should not forgive himself; what he did was wrong and he knew it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Usami didn't exactly forgive himself, IIRC he apologized for his actions first.

Also, "knowing consent was not given" is debatable, for reasons explained above.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Right. At the very first meeting, a guy pushes you down, grabs you from behind and sticks his hand down your pants to jerk you off, while you are freaking out and saying, "Stop! Pervert!" He doesn't stop, but says something super romantic like, "Want to scream for help?"

In yaoi land, this means you are being tsundere. Everywhere else, this is rape.

but

that isn't how consent works at all. the only person who can decide whether or not consent was given is the person themselves. you can give consent without saying yes, just as you can not give consent without ever saying no. it's not a judgment call that anyone else gets to make.

You can say you like the series and yaoi cliches, but that we who oppose the series are wrong? Wrong, because Usagi and Misaki's relationship grows (which it really doesn't do, it just circles the same things all over again)? No, you really shouldn't say that.

Kind of pathetic that unwilling sex (aka rape) is OK, because out of it comes something beautiful. Unwilling sex doesn't turn into willing sex when you look back from this point. You may forgive that, if it's given you something better now, but at the time, if you didn't want it, it was unwilling. You can like a setting like that, if you want. You can forgive the rape in the series, if you want, but don't try to make it disappear (aka "it doesn't exist"). That's the worst possible outcome.

I've read over 1000 yaoi manga books and studied them in my university days. I've watched the anime and read Junjo, but I didn't like it all that much. The characters are one-dimensional going back and forth and basic seme/uke stuff bores me. To have read so much, I now want more from my yaoi, and thus petty series like this does absolutely nothing for me. When you read enough those same patterns, they surely get old.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This has been quite the thread, hasn't it
In my secret I say that I think you wrong, and I'll keep thinking so. Certainly I am entitled to my thoughts.

I don't think their relationship goes in circles, there's been lots of character development for both characters. But if you don't like the series I suppose you're not gonna see it, just like I don't see all the uproar that you do.

I think the issue here is that I agree with those who respect Misaki's decision about his consent, while you do not. It's like only the first few pages exist for you and then everything the character has said, done or experienced does not matter. I can understand if you say "Those pages were unconvincing writing to me OP", but this level of denial on your part makes it look like you're taking this personally. Me, I see it as a tsundere cliché that unlike others, works in this series' case (do re-read page 27 please, and tell me if after the initial shock, Misaki thinks he's being raped - the actual character's thoughts, not yours. I'm reading it on Mangahere and it looks to me he took more as a challenge) and condemning the rest of the work for it is unjust.

As for the rest, I'll have to disagree, as I said in the secret I love both characters and I do not find them one-dimensional at all. Nor do I think Nakamura's series are petty. Let's agree to disagree or this thread will never end.

It's nice that you want new stuff for yourself? Me, rather than seeing the genre as some sort of monolith I just pick and choose the authors I like, so if I enjoy Nakamura's works doesn't mean I don't enjoy creators like Yamamoto Kotetsuko or Junko or Naono Bohra or stuff like Dame BL also. I find them all great in their own way. I never understood why liking a certain author means you can't appreciate another, or why people blame stuff that happens in real life on things that are not its cause. I'm sorry, but it really is no different from people blaming violence on videogames.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, where did all these creepy rape apologists come from? I always thought this kind of yaoi fan was only a myth, or else is limited to middle school girls, but this is quite the eye opener.
