If you include trans people in your work, you are being a fetishist, objectifying, stereotyping asshole.
If you don't include trans people in your work, you are being a transphobic (and maybe misogynist) asshole.

Cis people, just don't create works. Only way to win.

How do you know all of them are cis? They might be closeted trans. They might be trans and not certain of it yet. They might be non-closeted trans and just don't feel the need to mention it in their fic.

serious question: do you feel the same way about cis people who produce things like books, movies, tv shows etc? Or do you think that's okay under certain conditions? (for example, one of the creators of Dragon Age Inquisitions wrote a trans character for the game but heavily consulted with actual trans people because he was afraid that he would unintentionally come off as offensive)

People who do representation horribly, horribly wrong, and then get pissy when this is pointed out by the people they are ostensibly trying to give representation, are pretty sucky ia. Especially with such a complex and delicate issue.

I can understand being sick of that. Unfortunately, the transition between no trans representation and good trans representation in the media usually involves a lot of bumbling, half-assed attempts while people are figuring things out. Do you have ideas for a better approach, or do you think that trans characters should be written only by trans writers?

See, this is why I can't ever give myself the courage to write this trans* story I have in my head, even though I've had my trans* friends sign off on my ideas for accuracy (in their personal experiences)

So if you ever want your identity represented, better get writing so the rest of us know how it really goes.

Fairly sure most trans* folk are not going to put a nice little label saying "but don't worry, I'm a trannie too" on their work. I don't think you are bad, OP, but I do think you are both over sensitive and that you are misguided.

I think there's a happy medium between representation and false representation. It's no different from women complaining when female characters are (still) written like cliches from the 1950's, when characters of color are written as stereotypes, etc. You can want representation and still want it accurately portrayed.

And how do you know anon is one of those complaining about the lack of it?

i'm trans and a writer and i understanding where you are coming from. truth be told, most of the trans representation i come across that's written by a cisgender individual is not accurate, or seems forced or over the top. it's difficult to write about something you don't experience because your knowledge of it is basically just your interpretation of something you can never actually know personally.

that being said, i don't think this inherently makes it impossible for cis ppl to write good, well-rounded trans characters. same goes for any trait imo; i think white people can possibly write good poc characters too, for instance. it's just not often the case that these characters are depicted perfectly bc for cis/white/whatever people, it's largely guesswork.

but i wouldn't hate them for trying if the character they're writing isn't for the purpose of smut or angst or the token Queer(tm) or whatever ya know

They're not talking about writing original trans characters, guys.

You know what? I wrote a tropey genderswap story and some trans readers commented to say that they were very happy with the way I wrote the character's POV and feelings about being in the wrong body.

So, not trans, but I think people can understand the idea of dysphoria. The point of writing stuff is to convey what an experience is like with your imagination.

I don't like it either tbh unless the character is trans in canon. Generally when people write fanfic that makes a cis character trans, it comes off as really heavy handed, forced and like they're just doing it for brownie points. Those fics also tend to be really OOC and occasionally have unnecessary soap box rants from characters who would never give them in canon. I don't hate the authors though. At least they're trying, I guess, even if it's awful
