This might be a case of overthinking it:

- they need it to rhyme/fit into the melody.

- it could be non-literal, as in turning back and starting over in the relationship

- it's not a commentary on the (im)possibility of time travel;

Eh. It is what it is. It's not ~Great Literature~ but it's a fun read, mostly funny, with well-described protagonists (the kids are a bit thin, but really, they're not exactly main characters, so), and an easy storyline that's engaging while you're reading it, but not so heavy that you need to keep track of where you are.

...it also helps if you've read great whacking chunks of the Book of Revelation on a regular basis through the years. Makes the satire 9000X funnier, IME.

Makes sense. I think a lot of people try to focus their attention on trivial things when they're going through a genuinely distressing period. It's a lot easier to focus on a tv show than it is to reflect on the fact that there's something terribly wrong with your health
