Enjoy what you enjoy, yo, as long as you can acknowledge its imperfections (which is less to do in BBT's case with being mean to nerds and more to do with sexism and lazy writing but I've seen vert little of it so I'll let people who actually know it write about it).

It's a terrible show, but people give it a pass because it ~mentions scientific theory~ and ~nerd culture~. I've tried to like it a lot, and no matter how many times I watch it, it always comes across as a big "HEY NERDS, LOOK AT THIS STUFF YOU LIKE HA HA ISN'T THAT NERD STEREOTYPE FUNNY COMIC BOOK REFERENCE VIDEO GAME REFERENCE."

It's not smart. It's not really funny. I haven't come to the conclusion that it's actively mocking nerds, but it sure is exploiting stereotypes to build an audience. I'm more offended about the fact that it gets recommended to me so often than about it's character portrayal.

Rock on, OP. Like what you like. I personally don't find it a brilliant show, but I do feel it's legitimately helped make nerd culture more mainstream - more than alienating nerds, which is what the nerd outcry tends to be. Yeah, it makes fun of nerds, absolutely, but it also showcases a lot of nerd passion and now my great grandmother knows what Comic Con and cosplay are, and that will never not be hilarious. Anyway, it's as dumb as any sitcom, but dumbly enjoyable, too.

I like the show too, though at this point I'm not sure why. Mostly, I don't feel like I'm being mocked (there were a few episodes that really bugged me in this regard though). My biggest thing right now is the "nice guy" thing with Penny and Leonard, and how Sheldon treats Amy. And that Bernadette is becoming such a horrible person. I was also uncomfortable with how they treated Stuart's depression (I wanted to give him a hug) but they've made him creepy too. I find, though, a lot of that is just what happens on a long-running show where characters become caricatures.

I'm still watching though.

I don't find it as funny as I used to, but that's expected 10 seasons in, but I get where you're coming from.

Frankly, that one early episode of "Two Broke Girls" that had the steampunk guys in the opening five minutes was way more offensive to me as a geek than anything I've seen in TBBT. I dropped that show like a hot potato just over that one episode.

I don't think it's a particularly good show, but I never thought it was offensive. But you know, i'm against the grain and have enjoyed watching it on occasion.

I don't keep up with current episodes, but I used to watch it and like it. I don't really get why it's allegedly so super offensive--pretty much all mainstream Western TV shows having something in them that will offend someone. Why doesn't Modern Family or The Simpsons get this kind of treatment?

I don't love TBBT, though I think it has its moments, but overall it's not my cuppa. But like I don't care if you like it. and the people being personally offended and outraged that you're not watching ~objectively better~ shows are obnoxious

The Big Bang Theory is one of my favourite shows, and I say that both being the leader of my University College's Gaming Society and the holder of a Bachelor's in Film and Television Studies.

I was going to write a thing justifying my love for this show, but then I realized I have no need to justify it. I love it, I don't care if you don't.

I have only watched a handful of episodes, and I hated them for a number of reasons, including that I felt like I was at least somewhat being made fun of. However, if others like it that's up to them. I know that my tastes aren't the same as others, which is why shows I like tend to have low ratings and/or small fandoms.

I haven't watched the show for a few years now, but I recall that the thing that soured me on the show was the presentation of Howard's mother. (I became increasingly disappointed with Amy's and Bernadette's wasted potential as characters and the too-frequent fall-back onto the same one-note joke.)

I haven't watched in a while (we don't have cable anymore and i don't care to dl the current eps, so i'll catch up on Netflix sometime), but I always thought the show was cute. I never much cared for Leonard, but i loved Sheldon and Penny becoming friends, and Bernadette, and even Amy when they weren't making her creep on Penny so hard.

I liked when Raj struck out on his own, not being so codependent on the boys. It's not the Best Show Ever, but it's fun, and enjoyable. So you go, OP.

And yes - people being condescending or downright nasty about the fact that you find a show they don't like enjoyable is fucking stupid.

High five, OP! I love The Big Bang Theory. Many of the latest episodes have been kinda lackluster, but I still find it enjoyable. I understand why the show gets tons of hate, but I'll keep watching it because it genuinely entertains me.

I hate this show cause they could at least hire me as a geek fact checker before having a character say that the most revered movie among Trek fans is The Voyage Home.

The fact that it's not completely accurate to whatever the lords of geekdom hold to be the standard helps actually. I think it'd be more offensive and less funny if they hit closer to home.
