I once made the mistake of going to a style consultant. She was exceptionally patronising and horrible - her answer to every outfit quandry was to wear a colourful scarf.

She told me I dressed as if I had no personality - which to be fair isn't necessarily untrue as I lived in jeans and a tee shirt at the time But it was a bit rich coming from a woman whose signature look was rich middle class white woman with colourful scarf accessory Every outfit of hers was tailored trousers, generic top, colourful scarf, expensive stylish handbag. Bleurgh.

The one thing I took away from that appointment was to never dress like her lol!

I loved the late 90s fashions like crop tops worn with long skirts, low rise jeans, flared pants, 70s revival stuff, platform sandals, long tank dresses. I was 20 years younger and 40 pounds lighter than I am today then, too, lol.

20 years later and I still dress like the emo/wannabe-goth aesthetic I was rocking back in the early 2000s (not that I'm complaining, the arm warmers are still good for layers during winder and I've been using a lot of my old bandanas as reusable make-shift masks with the recent pandemic).

I spent most of my childhood wearing floral patterns. Which would be okay, I guess, except I insisted on wearing one kind of floral pattern for a top and then another entirely different, incredibly clashing floral pattern as bottoms.

My shoes had flowers on them too. My headbands as well.

I look at old pictures of me and go 'mom, why' and she's just like 'you wanted to wear it. i warned you.'

Touche, mom. Touche.

My one very glorious fashion fail from childhood. So I had this very floofy slip that was for wearing under dresses, obviously. But I used to play pretend a lot and use it as a skirt when I made up stories. So one day I wore it as a skirt to school. The administration freaked out. I got sent to the principle's office. My parents got a strongly worded call.

Even after my mother explained that I really thought it was a skirt, the school was not happy with me. I was sent home for the day, and the principal didn't like me much after that. He wasn't big on the idea of making up stories anyway. This was a Christian school, and he thought the idea sounded sketchy. I was in third grade. Don't most third graders play pretend of some kind?

There was about two years in high school where I dressed like Buffy Summers (because I wanted to be Buffy Summers). I mainly mimicked her S1 and S2 style: tiny little mini skirts and spaghetti strap tops and tall boots and chunky rings and fluffy bangs styled with mouse and a round brush. Also, I had so many cross necklaces, which makes me cringe now because I’m honestly not a fan of religion, and I’m sure everyone at school thought I was super Christian due to all the cross jewelry.


One fashion victory for me was when I got booked to be a 70’s era background extra, and they asked everyone to try to bring their most “seventies” wardrobe options. So I did. And when I got there everyone was being made to change into wardrobe provided by the production because nobody looked 70’s enough, but they took one look at me and were like, “You dressed yourself?” And then they dragged me over to more wardrobe people and were like, “Look at this! It’s perfect!” And then later on set a couple of other BG came up to me and were like, “You did that outfit yourself? That’s all your stuff? It looks so legit.”

In high school (circa 1981-85) I was sent home a few times for wearing miniskirts and Dead Kennedys and Circle Jerks tees. I consider those instances Fashion Triumphs.

I don't understand why everyone in America is obsessing about mask-wearing so much. The vast majority of Americans are wearing masks! The majority of Americans are wearing masks anytime they enter a public place! More Americans are wearing masks than Canadians. Far more Americans are wearing masks than Brits. More people could be wearing masks but America isn't far behind France or Italy or the Asian countries. And yet because the people who don't wear masks are so vocal and so stupid, mask-wearing is this obsessive concern.

The real problem with American society responding to the virus is our willingness to gather in public places, not our unwillingness to wear masks. I don't know where everyone got this idea that no one in America is wearing masks. It's not true.

The trend for wrapping every variation of sexuality with a pseduo-sciencey greco-roman label as a distinct orientation is a big step backwards from admitting that sexuality is complicated, messy, diverse, and perverse.

Kids should be taught and brought up without access to technology, except for:

- Cases where disability or Special educational needs means technology is vital to their development
- IT specific education such as coding
- Some gaming or viewing time at home for very short periods but no Internet or social media.

I don't understand people who don't have very basic skills that could save your life, or someone else.

CPR, how to swim, how to start a fire, what to do if someone is choking, etc.

And fuck it, I'm adding basic adult shit to the list too. If you can't do laundry or cook or clean a bathroom properly I'm judging the shit out of you. Your parents never taught you? Boo fuckity hoo. Teach your damn self.

Too many fucking people just pickling themselves in their own sealed jars of incompetence and not continuing to learn and grow and better themselves.

tbh I don't give a flying fuck if so-and-so author is black/asian/white/whatever. I don't give a flying fuck if that store is ~minority owned~.

I resent that I'm supposed to give a fuck about who owns the shit I want to buy. I don't care. If I like your product, I'll buy it. I don't give a crap about your story and where you came from and why your tragic tale means I should buy your product.

If I like your product, I'll buy your product. I don't care where you came from or what color your skin is or what your cultural roots are.

I just don't.

I am absolutely bewildered by the hypocrisy of some mass protests being OK and others not being OK in the midst of a global pandemic that disproportionately targets the very people whose protests are lauded by the media and state and local governments.

And I think the uptick in cases in the US is at least partially due to all the protests.

And I don't understand how this is a controversial opinion, and in fact, I think the majority of people who haven't been indoctrinated into this weird quasi-religious, ideological cult mentality on the left or right are sitting around as bewildered as I am and wondering why the hell they can't go to work when they see thousands of people crammed in together on the streets.

But anyway I certainly expect it to be a controversial opinion on FS.

I fully support the protests that have been going on but I do not get the people defending some of the looting and property destruction as 'revenge against capitalist oppressors' or whatever. Like someone posted a picture of a smashed up liquor store and defended it as 'preying on a poor community by supplying them with alcohol' or somesuch and...what now? For one thing, it looked like a small family-owned place and I don't see how you're sticking it to the man or protesting against systemic racism by destroying the livelihood of someone who is probably just trying to get by.

Or even looting Target,or setting fire to a Wendys. Yes, these corporations can afford it and they probably do take advantage of minority communities with low paying jobs and all that. But that Target has a manager, and store associates, and people stocking the shelves, and we're in a fucking pandemic where these people probably need their jobs to get by, and you just destroyed their workplace. I'm not worried about the billionaire CEO of Target, I'm worried about the people who worked at that store and needed that income and now are probably panicked and uncertain about if they can pay their rent because people decided to destroy their workplace. Just because the protests are just doesn't mean everything they do is right and that people can't suggest that just maybe destroying businesses does nothing to help their cause and only hurts innocent people in the end.

I'm sick of the way cults are typically treated in fiction and in fandom. I try not to take it personally, because a lot of people saying stuff that bothers me legitimately just don't know better, but seeing people treating cults like a joke-y abstract absurd thing that could never actually happen and not as a real thing that real people have experiences with makes me feel like shit (not getting into it but yeah, I am a cult survivor). I'm also sick of like, seeing true crime fan style voyeurism into real cults without any actual sympathy towards cult victims.

Cults come up in a few of my fandoms, because I can appreciate fiction that treats the topic respectfully, but that's apparently too much to ask from the fandom, and it's frustrating. I wish this was a less controversial opinion and that it didn't end up coming across like "no fun allowed" when I've tried saying something sometimes, or that at least fandom friends would be more understanding of why I didn't personally want to read their "sexy cult" fanfic or whatever, LOL.

It's just something I wish that people were more willing to be sympathetic to, I guess.
