130. Sadly, I agree. You would think he would be an agnostic rather than atheist. At least open to the ideas that there is a possibility of something, somethings or someone out there. It would be the smart bet to place.

And I feel anyone who says "Religion is the cause to all of man's sorrows or troubles," doesn't really understand Humanity at all.

Man is always the cause of his fellow man's heartache. God, gods, religion is the excuse he uses to do what he wants. Take religion away and he'll find another reason. Land, food, power, national pride and, yes, even science. (As in, scientists have proven that you are poisoning your land. We on the other hand are thriving. For the good of all humanity as well as yourself, we must take your land away from you to save you. Hence, this war.)

I don't think agnosticism is necessarily more rational than atheism. They're just two different ways of trying to apply rationality to belief.

If you define knowledge as 'justified, true belief', then it's more or less impossible to know if you know something or not. In my opinion, it's just as rational to respond to the lack of certainty by saying "I will believe in the things I have experienced evidence for and I will disbelieve things I have not experienced evidence for; and will revise my beliefs over time as I get new evidence" as it is to say "I will suspend having belief because I cannot have knowledge".

Sorry. You probably don't care that much. But I think my stance (I don't know if god(s) exist(s), but I believe not) is no less rational than an agnostic stance (I don't know if god(s) exist(s), and I have no beliefs either way) and it's kind of a sore spot for me given that "Well if you were actually being rational you'd be an agnostic!" is something I get all the time.

I also think, completely regardless of whether there are supernatural forces or not, it is silly to deny that religion can be a source of good in some people's lives, so I don't mean to come across as being antagonistic at all here. I'm just kinda sensitive on the subject.

Not Secret 1 - LOL Terrance Howard's is even tinier... LOL

Not Secret 3 - LOL

Too Big 2 - So do I!

104 - Gap-havers stand up!

105 - I always liked her as well... Cinderella 2 was a shitty film, but I liked Anastasia's arc. Poor Drucilla though... I haven't seen Cinderella 3 so I don't know if she ever had any happiness...

108 - Uh oh...

112 - Agreed (though I like het as well), which is why I've started to actively seek out fandoms with canon gay or heavy subtext. Granted, I can't stay interested in a series just because it brings the gay, but I've managed to find some that have both interested me and given me more slashy aspects to work with. Of course, this has nothing to do with the things I ship/slash for the lolz.

113 - Hahahaha so do I!

119 - Not familiar with either of those characters, but I know what it's like to have people ignore the growth of a favorite character of mine (*cough*WolframfromKKM*cough*).

132 - I love me some Wonder Woman!

162 - LOLOLOLOL

163 - I swear that guy looks just like my old Physics teacher!

164 - Gravitation sucked to me. It just... I spent the whole time wanted hit the main character with a brick.

174 - A new line? How about "Go buttfuck your male best friend while arguing about whether Superman could beat Batman, which Green Lantern is the best, or what was the best X-man team so that I can write slash about it"?

130 - me too

169 - ah, come on. if they're not afraid of dead people i seriously doubt a little fic is going to scare them. they are made of sterner stuff, and they know what fandom's like.

101. I'm sick of 'free-roaming' worlds, dammit. Invisible walls for fail. In other words, WORD.
125. Lol nosebleed text.
130. One of the things I like about his website is that it is so unsanitised compared to most celebrity blogs, it does come across warts and all. It is horrible when people you like have opinions that are utterly contrary to yours, but he's much more pleasant about it then Richard Dawkins, at any rate.
139. I so wanted him to be a recurring character :( Only person I've ever actually shipped with House.
143. I don't get why fandom hates her so much. I don't really get hating fictional characters anyway, but 13 hate seems so pointless. She's smart, and crazy (isn't that what fandom likes? lol.) and really really hot. what not to like?
146. I don't like people bashing anyone :( *quiet conflict-avoiding fan*
168. Where does one find awesome House promos?
174. Fuck off. Stop hanging in the porn-y bits of fandom, there's plenty of gen fic out there. including some written by *gasp* girls.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
101. MORROWIND. If you see a house, you can enter it. If you see a cupboard, you can look inside it. And steal what's in it. And may then get attacked by its owner if they catch you, and then arrested. If you see any object, anywhere, you can fiddle with it. All the books in the game can be read. And SHOULD be read, because they're frigging amazing and contain everything from astoundingly beautiful poetic lore to porn. And not all the houses are generically identical, either. They do tend to reflect in some small way the personalities of their owners, in the way things are stored, the cleanliness of the place, whether they have potted plants or nice dishware or leave certain items next to their sleeping areas... a particular example I recall is a random house with coins stuck into the wax of a candle. There are also personalized notes, signs, letters, journals, suicide notes, encrypted maps... YOU WILL NEVER GET BORED.

112. Iron Council by China Mieveille, The Fall of the Kings by Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman, Songmaster by Orson Scott Card, The Liar by Stephen Fry, The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, Biting the Sun by Tanith Lee, The Invention of Love by Tom Stoppard; and for musicals check out RENT, Falsettoland, and Kiss of the Spider Woman (but for the love of god, avoid Bounce! -- Sondheim was taking the bad drugs when he decided it would be a good idea to make a musical about gay guys in real estate in Boca fucking Raton).

121. LOL. <3

132. Dear Jesus, that woman is unattractive. X_X

137. You're clearly hanging around with the wrong guys on the wrong forums. Or just doing it wrong. What you do, see, is let them assume you're male until they decide you're cool, then enlighten them. In my experience, when you do it that way, they'll generally presume you're hot as well as kind of a neat person to hang out with.

150. That show stopped being clever to me when I was about 13. Trust me, it's not that intellectual. It's still just The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire after raping a thesaurus.

156. RIGHT HERE *WAVEWAVEWAVE*

167. How is this a secret? Also, congratulations on being able to copypasta every single coherent rant ever made agreeing with you. You're not saying anything new or interesting. Not to mention for someone who thinks they have something to say, you're making it awfully difficult for anyone to read you. GTFO.

173. Your persecution complex is showing.

174. I actually agree with you, when applicable to fandoms that actually aren't geared towards the wuvvy duvvy shit *COUGHMETALOCALYPSECOUGH*

105. You mean you're jealous and petty?

109. What do they sing about that could be offensive?

112. There's... I mean.. "Subtext" is not actually an anagram for "buttsex." There are plenty of het pairings with purely subtextual evidence for them. The only person stopping you from having more diversity in your shipping pantheon is you, especially if you're the type to seek out a ship rather than waiting complacently for it to come to you.

Me, I'm still waiting on a token slash ship that I'd really love to show up.

116. Somebody said it yesterday, but can we please get our heads on straight? Characters can't actually be Mary Sues. It isn't their fault - it's the writer's fault.

131. Why shouldn't you? I don't know why everybody hates on Disney adaptations. They're not accurate, sure, but that doesn't mean that they're not good.

137. I used to pretend to be a guy to get along in MMO circles. It was just too stressful otherwise. Hooray for sexism and stereotypes in gaming communities.

148. FUCK YOU JACK/TENENBAUM OTP OMG HOW DARE YOU INSULT THEIR LOVE

153. Kingdom Hearts was not made to be taken seriously. Playing the game and mentally adding copious amounts of cursing and chatspeak makes the game much more interesting.

166. What can I say, I like medical drama. It's pretty awful. I know that objectively.

167. It's interesting, because I was just thinking about the last wank explosion about this and sorting out that I don't think fantasy != reality really has any bearing on the argument. I don't recall anyone ever saying that people who love rapefic are going to go out and rape people or are incapable of comprehending real rape or feeling sympathy for the survivors of rape (though I do have to wonder about you when you absolutely cannot comprehend why a rape victim would feel uncomfortable with your masturbation material). So, really, it never was a question of reality. It's just that people are disturbed at the desire to get your rocks off on somebody else's suffering, and wary of the people who do so. I guess the argument in response to that would be that there is no one suffering in actuality, but I don't think that's really the point - people like the OP here are still getting off on hypothetical human suffering. That no one was wounded doesn't make that any less disturbing (or maybe even unethical) to some people.

TL;DR, this isn't a discussion about reality, it's a discussion about fantasy, sadism, discomfort and ethics.

173. I was with you until "heterophobia."

174. Then get the fuck off of livejournal. What is wrong with you? There are plenty of places where you can talk about fandom in terms of who would beat up whom - maybe even with girls, zOMG! Don't blame women because you're too stupid to be in the right part of the internet.

113. I did all the time when I was, like, 13 and was just starting to understand how sex worked. I imagined that if he and Lois Lane did it, she must have broken her internal organs somehow.

I, in sypathising with the one committing the rape/murder/other atrocious act am getting off to the idea of performing the actions.

108 I agree that it's annoying, but I don't think it's always elitist. I think part of it is that people are so far up the ass of whatever that they can't imagine that no one knows who the hell they're talking about, or it's a test of whether that person really is obscure. I mean, there are plenty of bands I listen to that I would never recognize in an out-of-context photograph. That said, I noticed how many of those secrets there were today and LOL, you win at f!s today!

110 When I read secrets like this I always wonder what the definition of "shitty" is. It seems like folks are awfully quick to judge on very little evidence (like that "I judge you for making icons of stolen fan art" secret and HELLO OP YOU NEVER ANSWERED MY QUESTION).

112 Diversity is great, but het shipping has its own problems, like HUGE CRAZY SHIP WARS precisely because their ships might be canon.

146 Thanks, I'm perfectly capable of championing my favorites without trashing others. It's not a zero-sum game of awesome.

151 Who even is that? It looks like Jimmy Carr but I can't imagine him in a leather jacket.

174

[identity profile] nom-anor.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
A few things. Which is odd, because I've never felt the need to comment ever in the history of me reading these posts.

1) I'll agree with the sexism accusations here. Might it be true despite the sexist presumption? Maybe. But it's irrelevant anyway. I just felt that needed to be touched on before I was accused of the same.

2) I really have come to despise the word ship more than any other word in the english language. And it's not even the intended definition of the damn word (or part of speech when you get down to it, but that's just the grammar geek bit of me having his say)! I've developed a hatred of the word fandom as a result because, nowadays, the term fandom is automatically assumed to mean one sits around creating badly-written fic about every possible combination of characters they can force to have sex (regardless of whether or not such an action would be 'in character', but that's saved for #3) for no reason at all.

I consider myself a fan of a great number of shows, book series, etc. But when I mention this to a fellow 'fan', I'm instantly asked about pairings I ship. The next person to ask me that question dies without a second thought. Can't a person just enjoy a show/book/whatever a great deal without forcing characters to have sex with everyone? If that gets you off, go for it, but don't call it fandom. You're just destroying the word for the rest of us and giving us a bad name to people who don't understand.

And finally, that brings us to my final topic:

3) You're also diminishing the quality of fanfic in general by making it all about these sex fantasies you'd like to share with the rest of us for some reason. There's no requirement that a plot be invented, or if one is that it be reasonably believable. Characters don't have to stay in character, because there's no depth, as most of the fic that doesn't deal with sex is just padding it as an excuse to get to the sex.

As a desperate plea from someone who takes his writing seriously that I'm sure will fall on deaf ears: please, for the love of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, just take 10 minutes to think this shit out a little more and make it halfway reasonable. I don't care how hot it makes you, but your favorite pairing of the hero of some series with his nemesis PROBABLY is never going to happen if you do what a real writer does and ask, "Would the character actually do that or am I insisting upon it for my own sake?"

To those few brave souls left who write quality fic (you know, like with a plot that isn't an excuse for two random characters to get it on...even if they DO get it on, just so long as that's not the only reason it exists) and actually keep characters in character and don't twist them to your own ends and make them do what YOU wanted them to do, I salute you. Keep on writing, and I hope I can find your writing as I sift through the endless muck clogging the tubes nowadays.

So it's a good thing I'm bored tonight with not much to do, because I'm sure the flame war this will incite will provide endless amusement. Let the games begin.

If this starts a flame war, I'm not going to be the one causing it, because for the most part I agree. Granted, I haven't written any fanfiction yet (even though I'm not new to this whole fandom business), but I know that if and when I do, I don't plan on it being all about the sex, or even romance. I like some well-written PWP every now and again, but after a while it just gets really tiring. So I sympathize. ;-)

(Besides, I don't remember anyone starting a flame war on page 6 of the comments, so I think you're safe. XD)

I'm on your side, dude(tte). In a weird way I don't consider this comment sexist because romance tends to be so rampantly anti-feminist, slash, het or otherwise (I said tends, kiddies).

Re: 174

This is an interesting point! But I don't understand how generalizing that all women in fandom write romance, as the secret implies, thereby "ruining" it, is somehow not sexist. Would you mind if you clarify that, please?

I have completely given up hope that the writers will introduce a female character that lasts longer than one episode that isn't terrible.

I didn't realize it was too much to ask for a strong recurring female with a decent actress and good writing, God I had so much hope for Anna.

THIS. Although I've always enjoyed Ruby (as far as the female characters go). I think Ruby is probably the strongest female they have on there right now despite the weak acting of Genevieve Cortese, just because she's the type of character that keeps you wondering. Is she good or evil? I'm personally waiting for the ~reveal~ where she betrays everyone, but I hope not cause I find her moral struggle so interesting.

But they really screwed Anna up. They also screwed up Bella and Jo who could have been AWESOME characters. I don't know why they can't seem to get it right with the female characters.

1. YES. I always wish I can go into houses or buildings, or just over a fence but no there's an invisable walls. I guess games have to be limited SOMEHOW but I still find myself going 8C when I can't go somewhere that looks all neat just barely off into the distance or to the side.

133. NOW ITS IN MY HEAD.
Just makes me think of the scene Goku leans forward/falls against Frieza and leans on him, and Frieza is like "...And here I thought you didn't like me." And takes Goku a second to go ".....O.O *JERK AWAY*" Least it is in the uncut english version.

139. Wilson always will have the top place in my House characters heart but I adore Lucas too. I miss him so much, he became my second favorite character very quickly (and he was such an awesome guy for Cuddy.)

168. Too bad Wilson's standing in the way.

....Sorry I had to say it cause of the image that was used. (No disrespect meant to Huddy shippers c: )

101. I've always felt that too. My father and I used to play Hot Shots Golf together on PS2 and I'd always want to go off and explore the stuff that was outside of the fairway.

139. I can't see him without thinking of his character in Garden State. :P

143. She isn't my favorite, but I do like her very much. My favorite is Taub... I get tired of being told that he's boring.

149. That miniseries (and the friends I met through it, who I no longer know unfortunately) helped me get through my first two years out of high school. :)

167. I have no rape fantasies and have actually been raped twice, but I agree with this secret so hard. Some of the complaints I see irritate the hell out of me.

174. Totally out of curiosity, when were those days? The first fic I ever read was romance (and slash to boot) and that was ten years ago. I'm just curious about how far back we're talking here.

174: I've been reading for thirteen years and remember people were bitching about women and their icky romance back then. Apparently women have been ruining fandom for over a decade.

131:Now I kinda want a Disney movie of it, too - it does sound like a winning formula...

140:I want to have a straw hat crew, too ;__;

153:Unrelated, but yay Hayner!! :D It's nice too see a secret featuring the one of the Twilight kids ^^

166:Lol, nice touch with the Geass there :D

From the third movie, where Anastasia actually had a character arc.
