I feel like the lesson here is not that setting and backstory are important for characterization, and more that a lot of characters are just formulaic and indistinguishable

It's not necessarily a bad thing if it works for the story might as well just admit it

I had something similar (although not quite that extreme) happen to me when I used to watch Smallville, because the actor who played Chloe looked exactly like the blonde version of a former friend of mine who almost got me expelled for something I wasn't involved in at all.

I sorta felt like this when Vic Mignogna finally got in trouble for all the shit he did. I used to be a big fan of his when DNAngel was dubbed and really liked him in FMA, but my friends who met him said he was kinda creepy, so I gradually stopped being a fan of his. Then all the fallout happened and I was just, "Huh, took 'em long enough".
