That is rough. It can be so frustrating how random shipping and fandom can be. Like there are shows I enjoy and I had hoped would spark that fandom feeling but no, just a regular viewing and no shipping or anything.

I feel this. I was in the fandom on LJ when it had first aired and liked all three ships mentioned but I did like TajiMiha the most (possibly bc I related too much to Mihashi and Tajima is more my type than Abe), it didn't seem wildly overwhelmed by the other two ships at the time but... well, it has been a long time, I guess things changed. I encourage you to contribute!

Like I said, I get that AbeMihashi ship. They're a battery. Their personalities clash. They need to learn to be equal partners. Learn how work for and with each other. It's compelling.
(Also has a bit of the old seme/uke dynamic many people like - no judgement)

Hanai/Tajima is more of a rivalship of the "I want something that he has kind" and I can also see why ppl like that.

I just really like how Tajima supports and understands Mihashi from the beginning and how Mihashi admires Tajima (like he does Abe) but is not scared of him at all.
Tajima doesn't judge Mihashi at all and brings him out of his shell more. They're silly together. They understand each other. They spend time together outside of baseball.
They SO very entertaining.

I get it but also think you need to give yourself some grace. There’s no changing that their music helped you and got you through very difficult times. That’s a good thing! And you’ve grown since then and embraced morals that transcend your early media exposure.

DAMN! I didn't know any of this until I read this threads (and the link provided.) I loved Hanson as a preteen, they were my favorite band. Now that I read all this? Dang, I'm shaking my head in disappointment.

I get you, OP. But like others say, allow your younger self grace. I think it's fine to acknowledge how they helped you as you were growing up, especially if it made you into the person you are, while also acknowledging disappointment for how you feel about them now.

When a piece of art or body of work speaks to you, and helps you, you can't beat yourself up when the creator(s) turn out to be horrid-- that's not the fault of your current self, let alone your preteen self! All you can do is remind yourself you're not responsible for their shit and carry on.

It's up to you and how you feel whether you can hold onto what was once meaningful to you while not supporting their future endeavors, or if it feels so tainted that you just need to kind of put it aside for a while-- maybe in the future you'll be able to come back to it and enjoy that thing on its own merits, maybe not.

I've been through similar stuff-- for me it was The Smiths that made me feel seen and validated and able to explore my identity at that age, only for Morrissey to be a racist twat. For a while I didn't want to go back and listen to songs that had really pulled me through some rough years. Eventually I was able to go back to the music I already had and just say 'look, I wouldn't want to support this person further because of shit he's said and ways he's behaved, but I didn't know that when I was a depressed gay kid in a small town, and the feelings that I had when I listened to this, those were all real and valid, and when I re-interrogate the songs I love, I don't find anything gross in THEM, and they still have the power to speak to me'.

BUT-- I've also had the other experience (though not with music specifically), of a creator being so horrible that not only can I not support their future work, when I go back and look at the things I already had, I see them in a new light, I see flaws I didn't notice or tried to shrug off when I was younger and I realize they were always part of a pattern that's only gotten worse. And not only did it make it impossible to enjoy the thing, but any fanworks relating to it I can't take any joy in. So... sometimes, the love does just die and that's okay, too-- it still isn't the fault of your younger self for finding something that spoke to you and loving it! The meaning it had for you and the part it played in you becoming yourself isn't tainted just because the creators are assholes!

Kid you had no way of knowing that Hanson was going to grow up to be icky, and they probably weren't icky when they were lids who made the music that spoke to you. I get not being a fan anymore, but you don't have to feel bad about the fact their music was important to you back then.

I'm disappointed myself to learn this about them.

The Post-Hanson days were rough for me. They were my favorite band for most of my teen years, and I've seen them 5 times. Super bummed Zac and Isaac turned out this way. Taylor is sort of noncommittal about everything, so I'm not sure what his beliefs are.

I'm in a small fandom where my fave character is a lot of people's fave. There's a (relatively) lot of fic about her, and it's mostly all great. I have an f/f ship I like for her, which is pretty rare, mostly bc she gets read as ace by a lot of writers. There's great gen fic about her though so I don't feel I'm missing out on much

UNTIL

the latest (probably last) season introduced a het potential love interest for her. Didn't wind up being canon but there's been an explosion of M/F fic about her & him and I HATE it. I get all excited for a new fic until I check the tags.

This is really dumb of me, there's literally nothing in the actual show to support my ship so why am I rolling my eyes that so many people have jumped onto something that is actually plausible?
